My £500 Jaguar XJ Project is (ALMOST) Complete | Saving A Bargain Modern Classic From The Scrapheap

  • In part three of my £500 Jaguar XJ (XJ350) project, things are finally coming together. For the first time on the Fuel Up Classic channel, I can present to you a nearly complete modern classic.
    The result of countless hours of work, replacement parts, and endless frustration feels all worthwhile. We're finally on the home straight with this bargain Jaguar but have we blown the budget in bringing this big cat back to life and what is left to do?
    It's been a lot of hard work, but I can't help to think that it's always better to save a classic than simply buy something new - what do you think?

    Well done fro persevering. I was one of those who thought this could go either way but I’m glad it’s been given a new lease of life. Of recent I’ve been finding myself battling through issues on my own cars of this era & sometimes despairing but one by one I’m tackling them & learning along the way.

      Thank you for watching! I think we're finally on the home straight with the old jag now. Completely understand, sometimes you have to (mostly for the sake of your sanity) try and tackle one job at a time and learn as you go, otherwise it can seem like a never ending task! Best of luck with your projects.

    Great job... I notice you are missing two N/S headlight washer jet holders... They can be difficult to locate but are available on the net and you can also get them 3D printed in a neutral colour and get them sprayed.

    I have an '06 XJ8 with 64,000kms. I've owned it for 16 yrs and it still dives like new. However, as we live in Alberta, Canada, it goes into hibernation in early November and isn't woken up until May.
    It hasn't been out on wet roads for the whole of my ownership!!
    I still love to drive it, it's beautiful.

      Ah, a fellow Canadian! Do you have have a process for making sure the car will be ready to go in the spring? I know these cars don't like sitting, but driving them in the winter isn't a good idea.

    • @colinaldridge259
      @colinaldridge259 Месяц назад

      @AmosDohms it's plugged in to a smart charger all winter, and covered with a dust sheet. If the roads are clear of snow, once, or perhaps twice through the winter, I'll fire it up and drive up and down the road.
      That's it. So far she has started first turn of the key every time in the spring.

      It's still going strong and currently used everyday by my mum. Next up will likely be a full overhaul of the rear suspension/bushes, as after 167,000 miles, they're getting a bit tired.

    Beware if rust in the older cars as well..my 1997 had corrosion on certain spots.

    • @fuelupclassic
      @fuelupclassic  4 месяца назад

      Ohh yes! Rust on old Jaguars is something I know only too well. Luckily my 1985 XJ lives in a heated garage and isn't used during the winter months to try and prevent rust as much as possible.
      The X350 XJ is constructed of aluminium and seems to hold up much better than it's predecessors, but subframes can corrode.
      Thank you for watching.

      Check the main earth points behind the headlamps, if you haven't already. They're a very common cause of quite a lot of X350 electrical issues as these cars age.

      Have redone all 3 earth points - still intermittent faults, driving me mad.

    BMWs also have hedgehogs like that !
    I had to replace mine on my old E39. It was a massive pain in the arse.
    I had to lay face-up in the car's foot well to access it.
