Cover of "Roygbiv" by Boards of Canada (from "Music Has the Right to Children" album).
From Wikipedia: "Roy G. Biv is an acronym for the sequence of hues commonly described as making up a rainbow: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet.
A rainbow spans a continuous spectrum of colors; the distinct bands are an artifact of human color vision."
I decided to keep the sound close to the original. It took a lot of work but I had a lot of fun too. Big respect to BoC for making up such a splendid melody and catching the uncatchable.
Everything is mixed in Reaper. I used a lot of VST processing, especially on piano.
Beat was made from various samples and I used a little bit of bit crusher effect to emulate the sound of 12bit samplers which BOC apparently love.
The sample of the kid saying "hey" was taken from the original with low pass and high pass filter applied.
If you try to emulate their sound you instantly know why they always say things in interviews like how they shape the sound of hihat for a few days and about all the hard processing job. Yes, indeed, this is the hardest part in this type of music.
Synths used: Yamaha DX100 for piano, KORG Volca Bass for bassline, Waldorf Blofeld for main melody and the melody at 0:35, Yamaha AN1X for the melody at 0:45.
If ROYGBIV got sick and couldn't attend my funeral, this is the version that I'd want to take its place.
Haha. my thoughts exactly
I love this comment.
+TPOF9000 I've just booked him to play live at mine.
genius ! ;)
You mean boards of canada?
I showed this video to my 3 year old son and now every night at bedtime he asks me to play it. He wants a keyboard for his birthday so he can play too. You have not only made a 3 year old a fan of BoC (which is awesome), you have literally inspired the next generation of music!
this!!
I just bought a Microkorg and found a vid with 100 patches that sound very similar to BoC. If you get him a synth it's just a thought. He's three so something patched with BoC might be fun. Still a pricey gift though for a 3 year old lol.
This is sweet! Big compliment for me. Children are the purest human beings. You'll only know if you are a father/mother. World is trying to corrupt us by being "adult".
My three year old LOVES this song too, both the original and this excellent cover version. :)
Magnifique 😍💙
made me re-realize just how immense this song is.
Can I have some milk? Please
The tuss sent me!
David firth Milkman 2004
I wish your husband would deliver my milk, in the morning. I wish he would deliver it when I’m yawning
Probably home lonely while he out milkin' other dudes. Do milkmen even exist this century...
It's amazing that it's possible to feel nostalgia for something you've never personally experienced.
the nostalgic sound comes from the minor notes.
@@xpez9694 not really, there are plenty of songs in minor that dont sound nostalgic
@@gerhitchman minor chords are universally understood as dark or sad as opposed to BRIGHT and happy major chords. I suggest googling music theory..
@@gerhitchman nostalgia or meloncollie feelings are usually understood as a form of sadness and yearning or sense of loss. A loss of another time. A memorial to a time that has long past. A song that triggers your memory of an old girlfriend makes the song feel nostalgic. The boards of canada use a lot of samples from canadian film board. They made lots of educational films and the sonic quality has that sense of nostalgia for those that went to preschool and elementary school in the 60s and 70s and even 80s...since the films were used in classrooms for decades...
Most accurate cover sound I've yet heard. Lovely.
This video, the sound, the people in the comments, it's just so wholesome, I feel at home whenever I come to listen to this.
OMG I ve listened this one complete hour...heavenly beautiful
Thank you, that's nice!
robert smith Porque Santo Tomas, Tú Puedes
Be sure to listen to the original. The whole album is mind blowingly good.
SANTO TOMAS
Best on the tube next to the real thing. Not as easy to do as people think because with BOC, it's as much about the texture, effects and tone as it is what notes you're playing. Well done on the video saturation, very appropriate.
The kind of song that makes you feel just happy to be alive . Groovy vibes 👌
You have now become Boards of Canada.
Wow, thanks. They are definitely one of the biggest wonders of this world. Musically, I'm learning a lot from their tunes. Spiritually, I feel like one of them.
Agreed. Just a shame that BoC themselves, with Tomorrow's Harvest, "un-become" themselves and completely forgot how to write melodies. Yes I'm bitter, it's a f*cking boring album and has none of the soul, passion or creativity of any of their earlier works. :(
They wanted to create a dark/bleak album. Wanted to give it another feel. It's one of my favorites.
+BlakeCasimir Reach for the Dead, White Cyclosa, Telepath, Cold Earth, Palace Posy, Split Your Infinities and New Seeds beg to differ.
BlakeCasimir man, seriously ? What about "Nothing is Real"?
SOLAR SANDS HELL YEAH
I never heard that 'piano riff' @0:35 so clearly! I love the song even more now!
I love how you perfectly remade the beat instead of just sampling it
How did you manage to do the beat so living, bas drum really lives.

@@GraemeWilliams21 Yeah, that's right.
Man, seriously... It made me cry. Pretty accurate and beautiful.
One of my top favourite instrumentals.
I used to listen to age 18. Now 28 still enjoying it. :)
@Adam: for sure!
And now you’re nearly 38
Getting the notes and sounds right is one thing, but you nailed the BoC atmosphere, well done!
Look I already love Roygbiv. It's still one of my go to BOC songs since I found out about them back in 2012. But seeing it actually be played...it just never ceases to amaze me what actually goes into this song.
Fantastic job, can't describe how beautiful this is!
Jogocraft Thank you, now this motivates me!
exactly..so hard to describe. original and this very talented musician's cover. just wonderful..just thanks.
Hey, could you do a cover of "Beware the Friendly Stranger"? (If you haven't done that one yet.)
SANTO TOMAS... Tú puedes

Just discovering your work in 2022, what a delight to hear your rendition.
I really prefer this one to the original. That clear sound got me.
Impressive deconstruction/reconstruction - must admit, never a fan of covers that try and emulate the original as much as possible but I appreciate the work that's gone into this.
Santo Tomás. Tu puedes

You TOTALLY nailed it.

Yup
No puedo creer como suena el Volca Bass ! felicitaciones !
This cover is more relaxing than the original song. 😌
I'm a huge BoC fan and you definitely get a thumps up! Superbly done!
Thank you. What they do is not just a music, it's enlightening, life-changing experience for sure. :)
Indeed! They are sacred for sure. A perfect example of music memories set to nature.
well, I think they are just really good on all levels: ideas, composition, sound design, thiniking out of the box, staying away from crappy hype etc.
got chills when 0:34 hit.. holy shit that was dope, man..
Beautiful take on one of the most amazingly blissful two and a half minutes in all of music.
This is absolutely one of my favorite songs. It brings me so much peace.
This is ace. Great playing and *fantastic* mixing.
Just came back from São Paulo, and have been listening to this song for day's now. Love it. Thanks for sharing how you have played it.
This song is truly… monumental
The thickness of that first keyboard sound makes me shiver. REALLY good cover!!!
Extremely authentic. The synths are spot-on.
this is fantastic
10/10 for everything you've done here. The video, the stuff used, production techniques and pinpoint cover accuracy! You're a blessing for the producer community
Thank you. :) If you are interested in some production stuff, please don't hesitate to watch my new 'Behind the scenes' video, where me and my mate HalutioN show how we made our 'Dayvan Cowboy' cover.
This is such a delight, always uplifts my mood - very masterful and powerful music.
Brilliant rendition of a fantastic piece of music by an iconic duo, thanks Peter 😊
Fantastic cover, it sounds even better than the original!
That's incredibly impressive
I love it! Thanks for showing which keys you're playing, I've gotta learn this!
Keep coming back to this video. Such a good job covering a truly touching and melancholic song full of beauty in all its simplicity.
I've got goosebumps. This was such a masterfully done cover that I KNOW would make Boards proud
I don't think I've every heard a cover that sounds so much like the original, incredibly done
One of the three best covers of Borads of Canada in RUclips, don´t you think so?
Outstanding and bravo !
You’ve kept that lovely warmth to the tune, nicely done !
Incredible tone. Great cover man, thank you.
Your 0:34 sound reminds me when I was a kid watching 90's local news bumper on my 70's telly. thank you... for bring back my memories :')
This was the song that opened my joint 30th birthday - 20 years ago now! This cover and video absolutely nail the vibe. good work!
So how old are you now?
@@chrisd6736 bruh
Superb, truly. And thank you for filming the different parts on the keyboard. I found the bassline, quite obvious, but not the rest. Thank you !
roygbiv has always been such a pivotal song for me in my youth and I always enjoy coming back to this cover because it really encapsulates and beautifully pays tribute to the excellent melodies and tones that BOC wrote in this track. amazing video!
One of the best Boards of Canada cover of all time 💎
The first few notes with the raw sound of the Volca Bass is so pure analog texture bass 🎹☕📻
OK...sunscribed!...you GOT this!
1:00 just sounds like heaven. great job.
Great work, on this cover and in your music. Congratulations.
Nailed it. If you did another one I would request "Everything You Do is A Balloon!"
sometimes i wonder if i like this more than the original...i come back to it a lot. great work
future nostalgia - love it. Fantastic cover
Very good
Seriously brilliant work on this track Peter !
that was magnificent! sounds exactly like the original
I'd like to hear a recreation of Melissa Juice from Twoism. or Sixtyniner. that track got me into Boards of Canada
*YESSSSS!!* : Just heard this excellent music in the Liminal Spaces video... immediately left comment guessing it was a Volca Bass 👂🎳💯🤸
Thank you. Wow, interesting video about Liminal Spaces!
@@PeterCarpenter80s Agreed! *Really* enjoyed that feel / aesthetic... and totally presumed you were involved in production, the music was a perfect fit! 👍
@@Rompler_Rocco I didn't know my cover was used in the video. Thanks for the info. And we should especially thank Boards of Canada for their music. :D
Wow, this was so well done - beautiful and inspiring. Thanks for sharing!
Wow gave me goosebumps! And the last 20 seconds is so astheticly pleasing literally the image and mood this song puts in my brain. Absolutely amazing! ❤️
What a beautiful song! Amazing cover.. I only heard of boards of Canada from zero 7!!
This song is magic and your version of it is absolute magic. I love it, thank you
Incredible! Thank you for making this video. I've always loved this song but seeing the different parts being played on the various synths is really wonderful.
Absolutely brilliant...
Heard this is a video. Really loved the style. I know it's a cover but I love how you did it.
This made me emotional well done sounds just like it but completely different in a good way
Brilliant, thanks for sharing. Liked and subscribed.

Great and elegant performance of a masterpiece.
Loop 10 hours, please. This is colossal, thank you Piotr.
Fantastic cover of BsOC Classic. Top synth work!
Superb cover!
so nice! One of my favorite melody from BoC
man the Volca series really brings it! another great BoC cover! i almost can’t tell the difference between the original. i just wish this version was longer by about another ten minutes, as the original always felt a bit short.
ROYGBIV sounds all grown up. Love this so much. Thank you, friend
Nostalgia ♡ this cover inspired me to learn ROYGBIV
Amazing. Absolutely beautiful!
My favourite BOC track. This version is superb. Well done!!
Love this-it has all the right feels! This version takes me back to my childhood, just like the original. Keep up the great work!👍
Well done. Trickier than it sounds.
amazing. nice work! one of my favorite songs ever. it evokes such a sad, but pleasurable emotion deep within me. takes me back to a certain time of my life..a time of learning..a time of new experiences...and almost always to the cold winter months! don't ask me why! just something about music awakening old memories and emotions. thank you for sharing!
;) Pozdrawiam.
Super dope cover! Always loved this song, thanks for doing it justice🤙
WOW that was amazing!!! Love your BOC covers :)
Dude what, no way. You're ridiculous. I mean I can maybe slightly hear how this is different to the original but it's basically impeccable. Holy shit.
What a jam. Great cover!✨
Best melody of anything ever.
You are doing the Lᴏʀᴅ's work.
makes me tear up
The start of this song gives me a serious Jake Chudnow vibe like in the end of a Vsauce episode.
omg i always thought the exact same thing
Absolutely splendid !!!!!!!!
Completely wonderful. Well done.
This was so sick man. Yea the drums and stuff had slightly different hues and shapes but you were successful in capturing their mantra and atmosphere. You made it your own and I am very impressed. Well done. You got a new subscriber. Keep playing. Being a musician myself for 20 years it’s the greatest free therapy ever.
