Exactly on point dude.. i just set up my first salt tank I was so nervous for years to do it and just went for it and it turned out to be quite easy to setup and maintain im kinda upset that I never did it earlier the saltwater fish are so beautiful I can see it now all my freshwater tanks will slowly turn to salt over the next few years great video to show that there's not much to be scared of

You've posted this in time for me to see it! It's so simplified, it's perfect for newbies. I have 3 planted freshwater tanks and I just bought a 4th, it's a 54l (14.25gal) and since it's on it's own stand, I kind of wanted to do some statement tank. I'd love to try saltwater in it.

This made me feel so much better all the other videos I saw made saltwater seem so complicated and and expensive with all the equipment others say to buy think a fowlr tank is more my speed
I have a 75 gallon fowlr tank. I have a canister filter, hang on the back, and a hang on the back protein skimmer. Setup is super easy and actually less maintenance in alot of ways compared to freshwater. I change 10 percent once a week. I have a 55 gallon rain barrel with an air tight lid where I store my saltwater. Then when needed I pump the water in when doing a water change. I also just use tap water to make the saltwater as I am not doing corals. Good video 👍
Thank you for this I had been hearing that saltwater tanks are a lot harder for an beginner to start with but this makes it sound a whole lot simpler. And now I kind of want to try it just to show my friend up hehe.
Nice video for people who wanna start a saltwater aquarium! You can definitely keep it this easy for a small fowlr. As a reef keeper myself I do wanna say however that if you’re planning on keeping corals or larger tanks it will become more complicated. In the long run you will need RO/DI water for your tank and things like a skimmer will make it a lot easier. But like I said, this video is great for the people who wanna start their first simple saltwater tank!

No one should be intimated when setting up a marine aquarium.
A fish only system is easier than most tropical planted tanks.
The difficulty does not start until you discuss marine invertebrates like corals. Soft coral and most LPS are on par with heavily planted tanks similar to Iwigami or Amano styles in their complexity and difficulty.
Marine tanks only become daunting once you start discussing finicky LPS or sensitive SPS such as Acropora or Montipora.

Just came upon your video on setting up a simple saltwater tank. Having a sponge filter or hob filter and a light you can definitely start a fowlr tank on a budget. Rodi water is not key as you said but is better for the over all long term health of the fish. Nicely done Zenzo. 👌

Yes you dont need rodi but to be honest in the long run is totally worth it. Plus if you add aquarium minerals and salts back to it you can use it for freshwater as well and know exactly whats in your water. Plus you can use it for drinking if your on a well like me if you drink only after ro and not di portion. Its a little expensive but can be well worth in long run. But tap is fine to
Hi, I’m going to get saltwater fish, just find out that I can set up a ro system to my sink tap. So I’m going to do that. No rushing into it tho going to do lot of research and look at tons and tons of RUclips vids and get different options
Just 2 very important detail about refractometer was missing in this video
1-) make sure to calibrate it for the first time and after using it few times, using a calibrating solution
2-) Always wash the refractometer with RO/DI water before and after using it.

Great video Zenzo! Saltwater is much easier than people think. I have run many clownfish breeding tanks with sponge filters and it works well. Like any part of the aquarium hobby you can down different rabbit holes. Saltwater is no different
If you keep any invertebrates in your FOWLR tank make sure your sand contains some calcium - it's critical for crustations to moult and anemones need it too which is why aragonite sand is ideal!❤ For all filter media and supplements, including Prime dechlorinator, Seachem is awesome and not horribly expensive. I use their Vibrant Sea salt which is cheaper than Instant Ocean and works great!

Hey, have you gone back to salties now that you’ve got the right information? I am about to start with the fish keeping hobby, but...I prefer the salties species and ecosystems but am afraid of everything negative I read and heard about it.
I’m still pretty intimidated by salt water tanks, the specific gravity and salinity are my main concern for keeping an eye on, and expensive equipment. One day I want a reef tank with a clown colony. Not sure how to start
So salinity you shouldn’t have to much of a problem with if you just test it every day and get a hanna handheld salinity tester and why are you worried abt gravity

Great video . I spent most of my day looking at Salt water tanks yesterday and fell in love with some of the fish and there amazing colours and Markings. Then I asked what equipment I’m going to need and they just totally overwhelmed me with a massive list running into thousands and i decided to have a think. But definitely changed my mind after watching but now I’m only going to do a small setup first. But more content on salt water and carols would be fantastic.

Your video is very informative and easy to understand. For people that don't have a heated fish room, how do you suggest to have the water the right temp to put in the tank if is sitting in a container for a couple days? Could you put a heater along with the air stone?
Depends on the volume of water. If you are doing a 25% water change, room temperature would be okay. If it’s more, I’d add a small heater.

Thank you for making and sharing your advice on a simple salt water tank. Honestly i didn't know it could be so easy as from looking at all the complex marine tanks with refugium and protein skimmers etc it's a big deterrent and looks scary to maintain unless you have lots of time. Didn't know what you can use sponge filters for filtration.
I've a few questions.
1. How often would you recommend doing water changes in your setup?
2. What's the maximum number of fishes or crustaceans that can be safely kept in a similar environment?
3. Do you think it's advisable to use ocean water and also sand from ocean floor as a way to help cycle the tank before adding fishes?
4. How can you tell when the tank is ready for fishes.
5. How and frequency would you clean sponge filters for salt water system.

Does the live rock act like plants, consuming nitrates and reducing need for water changes?
Live rock contains beneficial bacteria and microbes to help get your tank jump-started.
Have you ever tried growing macro algae in the tank?!
I have some algaes growing in my brackish tanks.

So here’s my question, when making the salt water do you have to let it sit for a couple of days with the pump or are there any methods of making the salt dissolve faster? And I say this as a freshwater dweeb who is new and wants to try salt water.
If you are using a circulation pump, it can dissolve pretty quickly (in a few short hours). It can depend on the brand/type of reef or marine salt that you are mixing.
question about storing own mix saltwater, do you need a airstone for that or just you can leave it in a big drum and how long can you store it, is it ok to put old mix saltwater that is left not used to the new mix salt water for storage also how long

Yes, you can use Prime.

Thanks for doing a Fowler tank. There isn't much information about them. Everyone wants to tank about a reef tank. I am not interested in the whole reverse osmosis thing . And coral care.

Thank you!!! I finally break the ice and started a new one. I'm in the nitrogen cycle. But since I added the salt the water is cloudy how can I remove the cloudiness? Or it will settle when the nitrogen cycle is done?
Your having a bacteria bloom. Give it a while and it will go away. Just the bacteria building up and reproducing. If your super inpatient you can get a uv sterilizer but i wouldn't.

No problem! Just glad new people are getting into the hobby. Good luck and dont give up! Are you doing a fowlr tank or full reef? I recommend a fowlr for a year or so and once your stable and comfortable with what your doing add some soft corals. It adds a whole new dimension and uniqueness to your saltwater experience!

I wouldn’t say that 20 gallons is tiny. Compared to my other tanks, sure, but it isn’t nano or anything. Also, if it were a larger tank like a 40 breeder, I would just add another sponge or two.
@@TazawaTanks there's only 1 size smaller that's acceptable for saltwater and that's 10 gallons. I have a 150 and 265 gallon saltwater aquariums and they are both small tanks. My dumps are 55 gallons, and they are tiny.
Edward Thayer That’s a matter of opinion. I’ve seen many successful nano reef tanks that are small. They just take more work. I had a nano reef tank that was 5 gallons for over a year. I sold it to a friend, and it’s still going strong and thriving.

And peacocks. Love it! I wish I did that years ago. Now you got me thinking about trying a smaller Fowler tank. I can’t believe you can filter them with only a sponge filter. One reason I never tried salt is I thought you need sumps, proteins skimmers etc. salt water fish are the most beautiful for sure

If it is legal and not polluted, yes. However, I would not recommend it. Too many variables. Some people do this though in places like Hawaii for example.

I haven’t had to use any...because salt is great on its own.

When cycling what do you add to start and keep the cycling process moving if you only put substrate and water. I know the bacteria needs to feed. I actually think I may start that process

Ive been using tap water in my reef tank for a few years now and coral and fish have been completely fine coral growth may have been a little bit slower but still grew and produced more heads i have not tried sps but softies and lps ive had success I live in WNY so your water may not be as good as mine
First person I've come across that doesn't seem to intentionally try to scare off newcomers. I've kepts mbuna and peacocks and south Americans an all that, now researching salt. May try it in a 20-40 gal one day. Luckily I have a place right down the road to buy water that's already RO if I decide to go that far.

Test for nitrates like in a freshwater tank.

I’ve just been testing the for nitrates. About 25% per week seems to be what this tank likes.

Hey nice salty setup! I can almost promise you that you will get a coral or anemone or something eventually, though. The allure of seeing them in the fish store is too much. Especially since your fish are reef safe lol.

With setting up a new fresh water tank, I put a sponge filter in another tank for a few weeks to seed it. Thus jump starting the cycle in the new tank. Can I do the same with salt water?
From my experience, the bacteria isn’t the same. It didn’t work for me in the past.

I love researching about bacteria and saltwater systems and realizing that most reef aquarists are sadly wrong or mistaken. Especially when it comes to nanos due to their implicit bias related to methods of care. Just because some of them need all these equipments and shortcuts they use in bigger tanks, doesn’t make them the standard. Water changes and macro/micro algae species are the ABSOLUTE most important for nanos I’ve read in literature, especially for reefs. They, like the arg sand, buffer the ph in the tank. Might have to dose more depending on species but that’s something little. (Get an automatic plant waterer and mix the solution into a separate bucket of your water change water at a decent strength, set to dose daily). Every single reef company recommends the micro dosing, along with water changes (auto top off is mandatory for nanos btw, systems range from 10-60). You can do it manually but ! Smaller than 5 gall, it’s needed. You will know your evap rate based on your heating strength and room conditions regularly. Recommend some expo market on the water level the first few weeks to figure out what’s evaporating.
Have you ever seen any studies showing that just using regular household salt(no iodine etc) to make salt water is not as good as the more expensive salt for salt water tanks?
Yes. Table salt is just sodium chloride. Reef salt has other elements like calcium, magnesium, sodium bicarbonate, etc.
