NHS child gender clinic: Staff concerns date back more than a decade - BBC Newsnight

- Newsnight has obtained a copy of a review into the NHS’s only child gender clinic from 2005, led by the then medical director Dr David Taylor. The review reveals safeguarding concerns had been raised by some staff back then, fifteen years ago. Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog
The NHS announced that an independent review is to take place into gender identity services for children and young people, with a focus on how care can be improved.
It’s an area of healthcare that Newsnight has covered several times over the last year, and which is rapidly changing.
Newsnight has learned that staff concerns about some practices at the NHS’s specialist children’s clinic date back more than a decade.
Newsnight’s Health Correspondent Deborah Cohen reports and this film was produced by Hannah Barnes.
Transitioning kids due to their anxiety over not fitting into gender stereotypes is sick.
It's worse than that. Young teenagers, going through the angst of puberty, are being told that their anxieties are likely caused by gender dysphoria. They're given packaged solutions which can result in big profits for those selling those solutions. Throw ideology into the mix and guess who bears the brunt of their idealism and greed. Teenagers and their families....and if you question these ideological and economic profiteers, they hide behind their accusations of bigotry. Incredibly, people are falling for this scam.
Exactly!😤 There's no other honest way of putting it.💔
Pure, intentional child abuse. Any clinician who refers a child under 18 years of age should lose their license and be jailed for chlld abuse.
As a 17 year old you make me very uncomfortable and I feel not only groomed but undermined
Turns out, questioning things is in the best interest of children
Sick abuse of children. It's a mental health issue, too many have regrets, too many suicide. Wtf is wrong with the world.
@@dominic197733 ridiculous kids can't have piercings or tattoos until they're 18. But they can be mutilated by surgeons.
It is a mental health issue for some but not all, there definitely can be underlying issues also. Tavistock was too overrun. I did read somewhere that 8 clinics around the UK are to be opened up sometime, better than it being in one centre only
Finally, we are seeing more research into this topic rather than being told it is hate speech to question anything
You've never been told that question things is hate speech.
@@Lunarfacia Yes, because questioning means you don't understand and can't relate and are clearly coming out of fear and hatred towards people who are different than you.
@@Lunarfacia Yes we have. I've been called Transphobic and TERF because I dare say that I think doctors/gender clinics are hasting to affirm and go on to transition without exploring possible reasons behind the will to transition, such as sexual abuse. Just yesterday I said that and was deemed transphobic for it.
@@naryainc Therefore, we should all live in a dictatorship where we are not allowed to say anything, because you said so.
I think because many of the questioners are definitely rooted in transphobia, not genuine or neutral questions, and faux concern trolling. None of them know any trans people but always talk over them. I’m not trans, but I’d listen to the experiences of trans people before having an opinion
I'm a left-winger, but think child gender reassignment is an unbelievably stupid idea. Unless there is a physical reason for surgery, it should be deferred until the age of majority. I'd add that I think the same of circumcision.
Circumcision is MGM!!
They don't do surgery, it's medicine to delay the choice either way
Hey, I was curious about this too and looked it up. Surgery is not on the table for minors. Instead, a medication ("puberty blockers") that halts sexual development delays puberty while they receive counseling regarding what choices they plan to make going forward. I found the Mayo Clinic site to be informative and helpful, and hope it helps you too: www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/gender-dysphoria/in-depth/pubertal-blockers/art-20459075
@@strightway4503 WILL you stop bombarding me with religious propaganda? It's not appreciated (from ANY religion, before you get your knickers in a twist). I consider evangelism to be spam and report it as such. Go sell your sky-fairy to someone else.
@@BahliPadma Surgery is not done under 18 in UK but is routinely carried out in the US. Even some 11 year olds have mastectomies. Puberty blockers have not been properly tested for blocking rather than delaying puberty and therefore any child being administered them is basically being experimented on
Women and a few men have been warning about this for years and have consequently been bullied- lost jobs- threatened. But the BBC have consistently refused to give balanced coverage. Now the clinic has been closed becaue it’s UNSAFE, you finally give the concerns some coverage.
You need to investigate Mermaids who are largely responsible for pushing this damaging ideology to children’s parents
Sure we had Graham Linehan saying exactly this a while back and being considered a bigot for doing so

Wrote a long third parter, which has gone now. Ok, being quick, in this theory, trans ppl are not trying to reinforce sex stereotypes. It’s more likely a
subconscious thing, absorbing ideas about gender from a young age, and then experiencing mental pain, from a disconnect to our body, that could come from this. To conclude: 1)have words for biological sex 2)encourage having new words to describe gender identity 3) one sympathetic, very sympathic 4)Convince that there MIGHT be a problem in safeguarding children, raised by the whole gender thing, this leading to proposing research into why ppl are trans (more research, goddammit) as a way of HELPING trans ppl. We have to stress the agreement on that, to decrease the likelihood of a Nazi comparison. 5)After that, encourage questioning, as a way of helping the gender thing, not being a bigot 6)And vaush like ppl, stop saying oppression had nothing to do with biology. Yes, a transwoman can look like a biological women. If this trans person walks to down the street, and a sexist prick (who perceives her as a biological woman) decides to assault her or something, that transwomen should be able to describe her experience. I could compare it to a straight guy being a target of homophobia bullying, because ppl decide they “seem gay”.
I know I’ve done a whole bloody essay on how hard this is to talk abt, but someone might appreciate it. I’ve had a long, respectful conversation with a transwomen on RUclips (seriously), and I felt like I could share some ideas on how to tackle this thing.
@@leafleafleaf9272 Concerning the last sentence, I did get that as a teenager but that was back in the 70s.
I just think... the current method of treatment is effective, in that ppl are happier afterwards, generally. But I also wonder, “woman” used to refer to biological sex, and if someone is unable to cope with that meaning of the word, or a word, maybe we should understand more about gd. We are going to have words for biological sex in humans, so if it’s something that causes mental distress, shouldn’t this be investigated as mental disorder?
Finally, some journalism from the BBC.
They've shat themselves at the rate people are cancelling their TV licences

Agreed.
Yup!
Shocking. The court cases will take the Tavistock apart.
Lets hope so
People have been speaking out about this for much longer than 15 years and it has only become more concerning. The fact that LGBTQI therapists are also challenging the practices of gender clinics should be a massive red flag, but sadly they will also be swept under the rug too.
There is nothing remotely surprising about any of this.
It’s disgusting it has taken this long to get this to a point where it is now being talked about! 🤬🤬🤬
The reason...$$$$. I have a lot of gay friends and a gay daughter, but after years of experience I'm quite sure that very few people who question their identity will actually be happier with a sex change treatment. I've known 1 or 2, but it's not the norm for gay people. Most of these kids are not getting the psychology they need
This is child abuse -
This is sick.
Encouraging kids to ‘transition’ is child abuse.
Marianne Havisham Children are being encouraged to go on puberty blockers and get hormone therapy which damages their mental and physical health. It’s manipulation and child abuse.
Marianne Havisham You must be deaf. The NHS staff literally admitted they were encouraging it in the video.
Marianne Havisham Puberty blockers and hormone therapy makes them infertile for the rest of their life.
Marianne Havisham There’s no evidence showing it relieves the condition. The trans suicide rate is astronomically high (even after transition surgery). It harms more people than it saves.
Marianne Havisham I don’t care if you ‘feel’ insulted by the facts that I’ve told you. The truth hurts sometimes.
The Tavistock Centre should be closed down and the parents pushing for their children to transition should be locked up for abuse!!
Thank you, Deborah Cohen, Hannah Barnes and the BBC. This information is vital for the safety of children and youth.
I'm not going to criticise Cohen or Barnes because they're individuals and I don't know their personal stories, but the BBC refused to cover this stuff until AFTER they announced the clinic was to be closed. They should have been reporting on it when the rise in referrals skyrocketed. A 4000% increase in referrals to the Tavistock clinic is more than enough to raise eyebrows. There's no way a single referral could balloon to 4000 in less than 10 years.
Turns out we were right.
It is child abuse
If the 2006 report was irrelevant, why did they fight so hard for so long to keep it hidden? I'm a liberal Democrat and a member of the LGBT community, but the idea of putting children who may be suffering from autism, depression, or who may be dealing with their sexual orientation on puberty blockers is very troubling. Some of the effects of these drugs can cause irreversible psychological and physical damage to people who weren't actually suffering from gender dysphoria, but had other issues that puberty blockers wouldn't solve. There needs to some follow up with the children who were treated at the clinic during the last 15 years in order to see how their lives have effected
So it turns out that giving hormones to little children raised suspicion from the start? You don't say!
So if I take all the ford logos off my car and put Ferrari logos on, dose that mean I have a Ferrari?
Nah, just a dude with a false equivalence again.

On one hand we accept that children cannot consent to sex, cannot vote, drive or drink alcohol … but when it comes to taking powerful hormones and irreversible surgeries , they can do so with no checks and balances ? Yes that does make sense 🥺

How many young people could have been saved from his horrible fate of gitting "affirmation treatment" when having completely other problems :(
I’m impressed BBC had the 🏐🏐 to actually cover this
No, it would have been ballsy if they’d covered this story years ago when concerned people were raising the alarm. Instead, they jumped on the bandwagon of labeling anyone with concerns or questions as trasphobes, bigots, conspiracy nuts, and fascists. Only now, that people inside this monstrous machine are speaking out, only now that the cat is out of the bag, only now that the place has been shut down over safety concerns are they covering this story. This doesn’t make them ballsy. It reveals how deep BBCs self-interest runs. They have no choice but to cover this scandal. This is the BBC saving face, not them showing courage.
The Tavistock Institute & Eugenics - know your history
There are questions about the evidence because there is so little of it!! This is new there are no long term studies yet. Just staff worried about covering their own a$$.
But you were telling us all how stunning and brave indoctrinating kids was for years BBC???
BBC normally supports these groups
Okay, let’s just say something. Even if there isn’t problem, we should talk about this, share studies etc. We need to stop with so many accusations of being a bigot or “terf”, because they can be used to frame any questioning related to this topic (e.g. what about kids pushed to transition because of homophobia, or because of a mental “root” problem), as an inherently hateful thing. We’re not trying to be hateful to trans youth, we’re trying to help them .
I want everyone one to love themselves and express themselves 100%. But if you’re a child that’s ‘questioning’ their gender identity, I don’t think you should make any permanent changes until you’re done questioning and fully answered on who you are and who you want to be. Love everyone though 🤘🏾
Twitter would call you transphobic for this
No-one would call you a transphobic person for saying this.
The issue is that the process includes “hormone blockers” they block hormones they don’t destroy them. The process is not permanent in anyway.
Dot lol man you’re not lying 😭😭 I just don’t want anyone to make a mistake and regret it. There are plenty of trans people who end up regretting their decision and then they end up unhappy and some even commit suicide. It’s fucked up 😞
will a true but I still feel like the medical knowledge on hormone blockers is still pretty new. Just like with most medical advances, we never know about the long term or adverse effects until we have years of data to examine
will a wow more lies. You clearly have zero knowledge of science. Changing the hormone balance of a pubescent or prepubescent human will be unalterable in the future. You can’t just give a 40 year old the hormones they should have had a 15 and call it a day. You people are so dangerously ignorant I wish freedom of speech wasn’t a thing.
There is nothing wrong with people who wish or want to change their gender but children and them under 18 years old, should not really be allowed to change gender!
They could make a big mistake in there lives as a child. So it should only be offered to 18+ and old enough, to know if it's right for them or not.
Without a doubt I mean what did everybody expect raising their kids on genderless phones and video games push your kids outside get them back to some play dates get them socializing and throw away the video games . Unfortunately there's a lot of programming and grooming going on I don't know what happened to the old school gay community they never would have let this stuff happened Unfortunately they can't be the gatekeeper anymore

There are cases of ambiguous gender. But my research on the subject indicates these cases are rare.
@@lco7080 Which is why I think that surgery for children that is not based on physical gender ambiguity is genital mutilation and ought to be both a criminal offence worldwide and the basis for civil actions against all participants.
@@lco7080 about 1% isn't as rare as you'd assume. A lot of them (about 2/3) tended to eventually identify as female but the problem was preemptively assuming they'd do that but then turn out they wouldn't, bring raised gender fluid and then letting them choose and mature into their chosen gendered is the way to go and not political or ideological at all.
In my country they are now allowed to choose and change their gender at will but in government and official website listed as non-binary which is the best there is we can do for them after realising that our cultures that categorised all of them as female (cultural expectations of intersex people) gave rise to a lot of people that didn't quite fit in and it wasn't their fault but rather our fault.

@@availanila While abnormalites might come to 1% that doesn't mean 1% are of ambiguous sex. That would be extremely rare.
Being born intersex is very rare and is very different from gender which is a social construct - in other words, biological intersex and gender are mutually exclusive.
CHAMS is the most useless service I wouldn't recommend any child go there, especially not a child who needs to talk about their gender and how they feel about it.
Bbc, why don’t you leave the comments open on other videos about this topic
Just about everyone experiences anxiety during puberty. I sure did.
I think a lot of “gender questioning” kids are gay, or just not happy with rigid gender roles, or sometimes both. Drugs and surgery are a poor “treatment” for this.
Lots of de-transitioners backing your theory. They were gay but the SM and TG propaganda convinced them they are TG.
@Unholygrail Prove it. Nobody knows the real numbers.
@Unholygrail I did. There are studies reporting 1-2% and 55% and none of them were done with proper methodology. It can be literally anything in between any values.
@Unholygrail Just give me the title of the study, I can google it. The exact title, word by word and the authors. That won't get spammed.
@Unholygrail Yeah, you haven't checked the studies, right? Two are from 2015, another two are from 2019. The Swedish study is done in between 1960 and 2010, on a very little sample, only a few hundreds of people, and already coming up with _"There were 15 (5 MF and 10 MF) regret applications corresponding to a 2.2 % regret rate for both sexes."_
And back then people were checked more thoroughly for mental illnesses and these were all adults, no minors.
The American study found:
_"The study also found that compared with the general population, transgender individuals with a gender incongruence were:_
_-about six times as likely to have had a mood or anxiety disorder health care visit;_
_-more than three times as likely to have received prescriptions for antidepressants and anti-anxiety medication;_
and
_-more than six times as likely to have been hospitalized after a suicide attempt._
_Despite the reduced mental health treatment use after gender-affirming surgery, treatment use among transgender individuals _*_continued to exceed_*_ that of the general population."_
So the benefit is questionable the least.
Thanks for the source, it's interesting, I will read the available studies to their full lenght. I have already found several cases when even I can see they were incorrectly analyzed. E.g. when people say there was at least one person who told them to de-transition, they were counted as "de-transitioned because of external pressures". So easy to see the flaw. If you listen to people on youtube they always say there are many many factors together which make them de-transition. And of course there are people who admit they didn't talk about their regret or surgery complications because they fear the backlash of the community. This can go to such an extreme degree, that people who suffer from seriously butchered surgeries are still shouting into the camera that they did not regret anything, and would do it again and also recommend the doctor who butchered them for others. Ask that person whether they have regretted anything and try to take their answer seriously. 😐

I thought the point of puberty blockers was to hold off puberty and so give the teen time to decide. It is not a sex change.
The problem is, that the brain cannot develop without the rest of the body. So prolonging childhood gives them more time, but not more maturity to make a grown up decision

I believe that the Tavistock Centre (The Tavistock Clinic, as it was originally known) came to note for it’s treatment of a condition then known as “shell shock”, after World War II. But things went downhill fast, apparently. The impact of the Tavistock’s “treatment for probably at least 50 years has loaned itself to unethical, immoral and criminal experimentation on people of all ages, suffering all manner of psychiatric ill-health. The Tavistock even had a hand in “treating” Martin Bryant, the man responsible for the changes to gun control here in Australia. Until two days ago, I was unaware of the connection but my first search after learning of this connection led me to this journal article, “Mass murder in Australia: Tavistock's Martin Bryant” by Allen Douglas and Michael J. This news clip was quite interesting, especially from an international perspective. They discuss in the documentary how many of the patients who do end up at the Tavistock Clinic are deeply troubled with complex needs. Furthermore, one of the clinicians that was anonymously cited said that they believe that there are numerous patients who have been and are currently being medically mismanaged. Other clinicians also cited concerns including weather clinicians are medicating kids who are homosexual, kids who are autistic, or kids who have trauma from various sources period. Ultimately, their concern regarding these questions is that the treatments that they are receiving are not germane to some of their other underlying psychological and medical conditions. From this standpoint I think this violates the ethical principle of beneficence and non-maleficence. I say this because in practice, the concerned clinicians in this documentary explained how their colleagues would refer their patients out to specialists who could provide hormone modification therapies that have the potential to cause irreversible biological damage, such as infertility, after just one session of meeting with the patient. All things considered, the current law in England stated that there needed to be a minimum of three sessions with the patient seeking this kind of care. Even with this three-session minimum, many of the clinicians in this documentary were still concerned about the nature of true consent attained by the patients regarding the full understanding and grasp of the gravity of the implications of hormone therapy treatment at a young age. Furthermore, the lack of understanding of the long-term side effects psychologically and in certain aspects physically that these patients would be exposed to exemplifies how such clinical care is not adhering to the ethical principles of beneficence and non-maleficence. In many cases many individuals may say that the patient’s autonomy was respected and that from an ethical perspective this should be praised. But based on the concerns that these clinicians also cited, it does seem that autonomy is also lacking in these scenarios. The idea of medical autonomy also implies a level of understanding that a patient must be able to have and demonstrate, as well as insight and reasoning towards the pros and cons of various treatment options given a foundational understanding of whatever condition it is they are hoping to get treated for. This is to say that it does not seem as though patients are given adequate time to truly gain this necessary insight and knowledge regarding what their treatments would entail but also the implications of permanent outcomes associated with the treatments they are seeking to receive. Moreover, assisting them to gain a fuller understanding of the lack of knowledge and understanding within the medical community of specific adverse reactions that are unknown at this time. I understand the urgency of protecting the mental health of our patients, but at what point is the passion for protection becoming detrimental to the realization of this goal, Especially in the face of the unknown.
