Legend of a game. My controls were X and O to run and Triangle and R1 for jump. Sometimes I would use a sock, cloth or tubular bandage over my hand to keep my fingernails in one piece.
We did that technique, but my friends and I would just wrap our finger in our t-shirts and slide them across X and Square. The game also would detect if you were using a turbo fire controller and would either nerf your movements, or even disqualify you in some rounds!
We had this game when I 13/14 and me and my cousin loved it! We didn’t use a lighter though we used a piece of a draught set that was similar in size to a slammer from pogs, it worked a treat! Awesome video mate it bought back a lot of fun memories
As promised, here i am to leave a comment on your vid! First off, as always, quality is always on point and the research into the game was incredible! The nostalgia you brought back to me with this one was also heart-felt, good memories beating times and distances, so much so that I sent this video to my WhatsApp group chat it it got us all debating who was better and which techniques we used to use to get the "using cheat" powwr bar lol, but I don't think I ever saw the dinosaur, so tha ksnfir sharing those Easter eggs with us. It was nice to hear that you used to play with your cousin as well as I also used to play this with my cousin too. Big Love dude, and keep smashing out the quality videos! 👍🏾
Thanks Cas 😁 glad you're enjoying the videos and I really appreciate you sharing your memories playing these games. It's awesome to read just how much joy these games gave people back in the day ❤️
I used to employ the controller rocking technique when I played this. It worked fairly well, but you would still be knackered after the longer events though. I had no idea there was a sequel either though.
I was too young to play this game back in the day, but I played Athens 2004 and London 2012 official Olympics games, so I'm looking forward to play this Track & Field saga in emulators. Thanks for making this video!
I used a tea towel on the end of 1 finger to slide between the buttons for events when I needed to jump, throw etc... as I could then use the other hand to press the action button. For pure speed I used my thumbs and rocked the controller against the thumbs rather than moving the thumbs. Seems similar to the new style of playing tetris on the NES competitively.
Absolutely love this game!! I went back to it recently. I use my PS3 when I'm playing PAL region PS1, - the Dual Shock 3 and Six axis controllers I have felt too spongy to use any of the old mashing techniques!! So I switched over to my modded/chipped PS1 but even then I just about qualified... 😮 Must be getting old!! 😂
I used to play this on ps1 all the time with my dad , brother and his friend next door. we all had cheats for button mashing My dad used a lighter , I used a vics nose thingy haa random stuff like that! Lots of fun memories 🤟👌
Yo! I do indeed have many fond memories of playing this with brothers and friends. And I liked the sequel on PS1, but didn't get into it as much as the first PS1 entry or the N64 version of 2/2000. Loved the hammer by spinning the stick. Tore the palms off ourselves.
Great video. This PS1 Track & Field game has never been beaten in this genre. So simple but it is perfect. My control method was unorthodox. I used a Vicks Inhaler on the R1 and R2 buttons. L1 was my action button. You should give it a shot 😂
Wow that's an interesting technique 😂😂 I love it! How did you hold the controller though? I'm guessing between your legs to keep both of your hands free for the shoulder buttons?
@@RetroSamBam it was kinda on my lap and not fully in my legs 😂. I was the only one in my group who used this method. A biro across X&O was the common approach. Also a couple of guys used their thumbs and kinda rattled the controller in their hand. We used to have some competitive sessions 😂
After playing this game so much as a youth I could really hone those finger vibrating skills These days playing with the Famicom version special controllers for the game, those skills still hold up Trying with the MSX games and... well... the game pads are pricey and a bit fragile and I'm afraid to bust them 😅
You haven't played this to it's full potential until you have done some stroke-inducing finger-bashing whilst commuting to work on a busy train using an emulation device. Gotta make sure the buttons are good and clicky too
I used to love this game sooooo much. My only regret is that it was before online gaming was a thing so I never got to see how good I really was.......
Thank god you mentioned that mole ive forwarded this to my mate because we were convinced when we were kids that it come up and laughed at our score 😂😂my friend thought we were mad 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'm so glad you mentioned that 😂 I was hoping to do a bit in this video about being able to throw javelins out of the stadium (as well as all of the other mad overkills you could do like that). I saw a video a few years ago with someone who done it in all of the events, but I couldn't find it when making this video so I thought it probably wasn't real and I imagined it... You've just confirmed that it was real 😁
@RetroSamBam ha omg yes it's 100% real. Running the 100m in 3 to 4 seconds was insane. The amount of fun you had with that device was insane and you gotta do a video..will bring back so many memories
I played this as a kid.. the horror! Button mashing square and circle, who thought that was a good idea? Even now I know I’d be knackered just doing the 100m.
Haha yes, would love to have been in the room when Konami was play testing the circle square layout 😂 It's good that they gave us the option to change it though thank God 😅
Who used their fingers!? You hold controller up in the air and hover your thumb over one button and use your other thumb to rock the controller between the two
Thanks for watching! What event do you remember having the most fun with?

Same here Larry but me and my bro's called it the 'Sock Method'. Never knew it could detect turbo fire!
@@ModernReliksame :)
The legendary method. 😀
I used a glove!! But one by one the fingers would wear out!! 😂
I went through an alarmingly large amount of gloves in the autumn of 96!! 🤣
Roll a clipper lighter over the buttons repeatedly. WRs galore
We used tea spoons in a similar way, hahaha
no one could beat me in this master piece of a game
OMG! My little brother ruled at this. He was running the 100m in about 7 secs, bashing the controller so hard his face would go red.
"Christie comes storming through.....its Linford Christie!!!"

Thanks Leo, glad you enjoyed it 😁 you mentioning pogs has unlocked a lot of good memories for me ❤️

Loved this and the n64 one that added some more events

Just found your channel really enjoying it
Thanks 😁
Used to rent this from blockbuster.
You needed to give your fingers/hands a break lol 😂
I loved this game and the original in the arcade as well as the arcade 'sequel' Konami Hyper Sports
Absolutely love this game!!

Aah, the fond memories of the hammer throw on the Nintendo 64 version 😅
A friend of mine could bash the sprint buttons so quickly that it would say "USING TRICK?" above the time.
Will never forget the "mum can I borrow your lighter" comment we used to make when we were little and playing this game! Good times. Loved the video 😊
Those were the days aye ❤️❤️
Nagano 98 was a great game too. The speed skating broke fingers
I had international track and field 2. It was actually really good!
I used to play this on ps1 all the time with my dad , brother and his friend next door. we all had cheats for button mashing
My dad used a lighter , I used a vics nose thingy haa random stuff like that! Lots of fun memories 🤟👌
Loved playing this game with friends
Thanks for watching Lennie 😁

Back then,i had no idea Daley Thompsons Decathalon was a rip off of this.
It’s games like this that the turbo button was made for.
Pen tops and lighters for the most part, ive still got two copies of the game for some reason
Daily Thompson had games like these aswell..one of his games was 1st game I ever played like these
Yes, I remember playing Daley Thompson’s Decathlon on the Spectrum 48k.
I used to use one of those 3rd party controllers with a “turbo” setting😂
After playing this game so much as a youth I could really hone those finger vibrating skills
These days playing with the Famicom version special controllers for the game, those skills still hold up
Trying with the MSX games and... well... the game pads are pricey and a bit fragile and I'm afraid to bust them 😅
I played and enjoyed the version released on the 8 bit consoles.
Good times mate.
Good times indeed ❤️
The cheat codes were excellent
Managed to clear around 8.5m on the pole vault. By far the most fun event due to how broke it was lol
Using a lighter was banned in our house - considered 'steroids' after 7.8 second 100m sprints.
I played track and field 2 as a kid
We need more of those on ps5 and xbox s/x
Not a clipper lighter, but I used a polo minis plastic tube.
Genius!
I used my knuckle instead of a clipper until blood and skin ended up all over the controller. The blisters were painful.
Yeah no doubt! Hope you broke a few World Records with that techique at least 😅
Cheating.
Great video. I've been playing some of the old Olympics games on Mega Drive and PS1 recently, and my fingers hurt. Should have used a lighter! 😂
You forgot about Track’n’fields sequel, Hypersports.
You haven't played this to it's full potential until you have done some stroke-inducing finger-bashing whilst commuting to work on a busy train using an emulation device. Gotta make sure the buttons are good and clicky too
Blimey that'll add a new edge to the game! I bet everyone on the train loved hearing those clicky buttons too 🙃😂
I used to love this game sooooo much. My only regret is that it was before online gaming was a thing so I never got to see how good I really was.......
Omg can you imagine the sort of World Records that people would set if this game was online 🤯 Thanks for watching 😁
Thank god you mentioned that mole ive forwarded this to my mate because we were convinced when we were kids that it come up and laughed at our score 😂😂my friend thought we were mad 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I don't think it said 'hello Jackie' like it did in this video though 😂😂
I had an Explorer cheat box installed to the back of the ps1. Lol I was throwing that javelin out of the arena
I'm so glad you mentioned that 😂 I was hoping to do a bit in this video about being able to throw javelins out of the stadium (as well as all of the other mad overkills you could do like that). I used to use my t shirt or a cloth on my finger to mash the buttons
I used to use a spoon. I was a track addict.
Can these b setup & played on current computers?
My technique was to use a sock over your hand and then mash the buttons with your finger or thumb. 🎮
Never mind the lighter technique, a wolloen glove did it quicker. My record for the 100 metres was just under 7 seconds
Also, the mate who had the game also had a multi tap so 3 of us were able to play at once
What a game my square ans x buttons took a hammering
So did my lungs
I used my nails for this game.
Who used their fingers!? You hold controller up in the air and hover your thumb over one button and use your other thumb to rock the controller between the two
I still own a competition pro turbo pad that i used for this game. Also called cheating lol
Blisters. Couldnt play it for a few days. Then blisters ahain. Rinse and repeat.
*again.
Sorry for my bad spelling. It's blisters from playing this game again.
No it didn’t just put a ring on your finger and slide across the buttons break every world record
All these comments tallkng about the items theh used. Flst out chetong. We didnt allow that in my circle.
To be fair all of the Track & Field games pushed your fingers to their limits lol
