Really great conversation and watch. Positive, non judgment and intelligent. Totally agree and felt what everyone said. What i really felt from this panel and just from all the comments is everyone who is Samoan is proud to be and when someone tries to tell you you are not it hurts. Also love hearing about all the Samoans who are out there in the community actually doing big things it’s really inspiring and encouraging.
The whole concept of Afakasi is very colonial in origin, as an "afakasi" born and bred in Samoa I understand and appreciate what Hannah raised, to a point. Yes, there is hubris and privilege, in both the Samoa context, but also outside of Samoa, more so by those who are afforded opportunities based on their perceived "whiteness" as opposed to brownness, in positions of authority and so on, the said "gatekeepers". However, I also agree with the panelists who raised some good points regarding identity, as wholly subjective in the framework of our culture, traditions, personal histories, as valid and not to be generalised as a particular characteristic of all Afakasi. As a Samoan, I am very proud to say so, I may not look Samoan, in fact people mistake me for being Italian or anything else, but I speak my language, I am humble before God, I love my family, I am proud of my villages and origins, I work hard, I strive to do my best to represent my people and my country no matter where I am in the world. Growing up in Samoa, my first memory of primary school was when a kid asked me my name, I answered, o Afakasi, hahaha, he looked at me and laughed his head off.
Let’s just break this down real quick. All these Samoans thinking hannah is right is completely wrong lol. No Samoan in nz or Aus needs humbling,if anyone needs humbling it’s people like her and people in the islands expecting too much from the new generation Samoans in Aus and nz. They expect handouts for free,my family never got here by handouts lol they arrived here by working hard and having a vision. Some of you guys automatically think the people in Aus or nz should be giving back like Samoa did anything for us. Literally,every year we are sending money to Samoan for peoples funerals we aren’t even related to known to it’s crazy especially being in a financial crisis ourselves. I am a 2nd generation Samoan here in Australia with my son being the 3rd and I will never have him send money to Samoa or help out with them if they don’t know his existence and he doesn’t know theirs. Just because I don’t do anything to help out the people in the islands I don’t even know means I’m not Samoan? Grow up ffs. All you Samoans stop asking for handouts and work hard brick by brick just like how our ancestors did to get us here in nz and Aus. Hannah has no right to say we need humbling. She needs to grow up
This is exactly what she's speaking about us feeling entitled that the culture or Samoa owes us something. No one in Samoa is asking for a handout. Plus, not all families are the same. We are communal culture; we helped each other especially in our time of needs. The people you give to, you might not know them, but they might have helped your parents, your families etc during their time of needs. Now your aiga is reciprocating their alofa. You might not see it happen while you are alive but your tautua will be reciprocated.

Staying offended is not enough for a topic as heavy as this. Her 'hot take' was loaded - yes but I feel in her way she called us all out to do better in whatever space we are in. Yes she identified Afakasi ppl but I understood it as the Afakasi and Samoan people who are afforded opportunities to support Pacific peoples. It appears she works closely in /with govt spaces so I'm not surprised if she sees the same ppl being handpicked for roles and not doing their due diligence in these positions. It stung when I first watched it but I know deep within I can do so much more to foster the language, culture and essence of Faasamoa or to be that bridge for my kids so they don't face the identity crisis I had growing up in Aotearoa (I am full samoa with Tongan and German ancestry). I guess that is where I have found my strength and challenge in raising confident children of Samoa hopefully with more language intact. I also feel learning our culture is a never ending journey and we will never have fully arrived and that's on humility and just with age you grow and learn something different every-time you revisit certain aspects of our culture and I am saying humbly I do not know a lot lmaooooo. Seeing Agapetos list what she does do ia gale I don't do any of that. But I'm Samoa whether someone tells me their opinion on the matter. Hot take, Silipa explaining what white people/foreign do for people of Color was a lil odd like he was apologising to white people for our brown sister that stepped out of line and doesn't know how much you do for us 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Afakasi People are Samoan People, Yourself included. Halfcaste and Blood Quantum is a European Colonial Invention, it was never part of the Fa'a Samoa, Divide and Conquer and for some people it worked, and is still doing its job over a hundred years into the Future.

That is us being inclusive but we know also they belong to another culture as well.. so they may not have engaged in this dialogue should she have not called out afakasi and nz born Samoans who are in positions to support and lead others.

She should of just said Samoans in Positions of influence should do more to learn the culture and learn the culture of service. No need to single the NZ born out. No need to single those they call Afakasi out. Its not their fault that they are *Afakasi* or born in NZ.

Its very nice, but its not a luxury everyone has at the drop of a hat. There are people everywhere and Samoan People everywhere. yes freedom of speech, but her deliverance should had been thought out before she said it. I am afakasi and i am humbled, and not entitled. I am very respectful, because i was raised by my grandmother, I think she is referring to this new generation, who some are entitled and not humble because they live in the mostly the western world and ideals.
It's hard for samoan to understand what Hana meant cause she didn't elaborate what she meant in a easier way for us to understand. It's like saying I'm a Christian without learning and walking plus understanding what a Christian means
