  • UP 844 has been in continuous service on Union Pacific since it was built in 1944, perhaps the only steam locomotive never removed from service and still operating on its original railroad. Now totally rebuilt, it's amazing!!
    *********************************************************************
    We followed to locomotive through Idaho on "shake down" runs testing the rebuild completed in 2016. Rain and mist made for some spectacular images of steam in the mist. We also stent the night at Lava Hot Springs, to "take the waters" in this awesome old hotel and resort from 1911. This was 844’s first real trip after a break-in run in the Cheyenne-Colorado area last fall. They took the locomotive through Wyoming, Idaho and Utah in April of 2017 with a string of service cars and two passenger cars. they are now ready to start a full schedule of trips with passengers.
    ********************************************************************
    From Utah Rails.net:
    844 and 838:
    Built by American Locomotive Company.
    *UP 838 was retired July 1962; stored at Cheyenne, Wyoming; used as a source of parts for 844.
    * UP 844 has been in continuous service on Union Pacific since it was built in 1944; renumbered from UP 844 to UP 8444 in June 1962 to avoid confusion with newly delivered GP30 844; renumbered back to UP 844 on June 2, 1989 (27 years later) after the GP30 had been retired.
    * UP 8444 received a complete rebuilding by Omaha shops in 1971, including new flues, firebrick, dynamo, and superheaters, along with new brasses, staybolts, and paint. After powering the last UP passenger train over Sherman Hill prior to the start of Amtrak on May 1, 1971, later in May 1971, UP 8444 was sent to Omaha for a complete rebuild. A break-in run was made between Omaha and Valley, Nebraska on November 7, 1971. UP 8444 returned to Cheyenne on January 10, 1972. Five days later, on January 15th, UP 8444 was used to power a train to Denver for Wyoming Day at the National Western Stock Show. (Railroad magazine, May 1972, page 54; Fifty Years of Union Pacific Steam Excursions, page 23)
    *UP 844 was painted in two-tone gray with yellow lettering and striping from September 1987 through June 1996 (out of service, September 1991 to September 1996).
    *UP 844 was out of service from September 1991 to September 20, 1996, for an overhaul which included work mostly on the running gear. Following the overhaul, it has been reported that almost everything below the running boards was either replaced, or reconditioned.
    *UP 844 was out of service from July 1999 to March 2005, repairing damage from a boiler tube failure at Railfair 1999 in Sacramento, California.
    *UP 844 overhaul and rebuild was completed during March 2005, including firebox, backhead, and all staybolts and flues; break-in run to Denver on May 5; displayed at Cheyenne on June 9, 2005; second break-in run operated between Cheyenne and Denver on June 22, 2005; operated on public excursion service on the annual Denver Post train for Cheyenne Frontier Days on July 23, and for UPHS Denver convention on July 24, 2005.
    * UP 844 was last used during Cheyenne Frontier Days on July 18-20, 2013, and a special excursion for Cheyenne Depot Museum on July 21, 2013.
    *UP 844 was removed from service on July 21, 2013, pending a complete overhaul.
    *UP 844 was returned to service on July 23, 2016 on the Cheyenne Frontier Days special; the overhaul was completed and a test run to Greeley was made on July 12; a positioning move from Cheyenne to Denver made on July 21.

    It's nice to see 844 steaming again. Boy is she beautiful. I wish I could see her in person. I love big northern class steam engines with 80 inch drivers. I can't wait until Santa Fe 2926 is fully restored.

      @karynfelix-the-Cat 7 лет назад +1

      They did have a diesel loco behind the engine when they pulled into Pocatello.. But... Then they left Pocatello without the diesel loco.. and the 844 was running solo down to Ogden.... Hummmmm.....

    This is a great video. So cool seeing steamers running in real use. I wonder, do they use recycled cooking oil or petroleum based fuel oil? Using reclaimed cooking oil would be a great green alternative to petroleum based fuel oil. Looking forward to the model cars. Thank you. :-)

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  7 лет назад +2

      A B 17 just flew over our house!! COOL!! But I digress.. Nope, fuel oil. About 8,000 gallons of it. Not sure how much it uses, the turbines used 2 leaders per SECOND. Just the fuel line was like a fire hose!! So bio is just not possible I think.However, don't know for sure.

    Just after finishing this video, I was paging through my copy of "laying out for boiler makers" and the section I was reading was on taking measurements from corroded fireboxes to transfer to the new firebox. Keeping steam engines running requires a shop large and good enough to essentially build a locomotive from the frame, cylinder and wheel castings. Most class 1 railroads had shops that could do exactly that.

  • @crystalrock18
    @crystalrock18 7 лет назад +3

    110 MPH?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I had no idea the 844 could "cruise" at that speed, that is impressive!!!!!!! One thing I still remember when I was young there was a railman festival in STL back in 1991 and the 844 and FRISCO 1522 double headed for downtown STL to the STL transportation museum where the 1522 now resides. I still miss that locomotive so much. Over all super cool video gang!!!!!!!

    Union Pacific Challenger 4-6-6-4 # 3985 has been retired again, for a second time. This is according to Ed Dickens, Manager of UP Steam and Heritage Operations, in a Facebook posting on the official UP Steam Club Facebook page, sponsored by the Union Pacific Railroad. The 3985 needs millions of dollars of urgent repairs to be able to run again. 3985 is currently in storage at the UP steam shop. UP says that 3985 will be placed on permanent display until they decide otherwise. It could be a very long time (maybe forever) until UP 3985 sees action again. More than likely 3985 will go back into obscurity and will sadly be forgotten.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 года назад +1

      Well... never forgotten. When 3985 was pulled for its required service it was found it needed a lot of work. The big debate was over the boiler shell itself. There had been leaking between two sections. Some said no big deal it’s been leaking for decades. Others (Ed) said no, really big deal. Moreover they cut several holes in the firebox and found the metal too thin. Confirming what they had seen it testing. All of this is repairable. But really expensive. So the question was asked, wouldn’t it be cheeper to start over with a different locomotive? As it happens yes. And nothing says Union Pacific more that a big boy. So will 3985 ever run again? Probably not but never say never. They said 4014 would never run again. But odds are 3985 will be cosmically restored and placed in a museum. Just like 4014 was years ago. But not right away. Ed has a lot of other stuff on his plate.

    Dale and Karyn, I believe that this stands out quite possibly as the best video ever on your RUclips channel! Its incredible, sweeping footage, its sensitive and sometimes majestic musical accompaniment, and its compelling, insightful narration engulfs the viewer in this amazing story about Union Pacific's #844 and Heritage Fleet.
    Your video moved me so much that I felt motivated to share it with a RUclips buddy of mine and fellow model railroader named Roy. He's an American expatriate who lives in Panama and has built the most remarkable, realistically sceniced N scale layout that I've ever seen of Union Pacific's modern Evanston and Pocatello subdivisions.
    Roy's layout highlights an astounding feat when you realize that there's no hobby shop or model railroading supplier neither down the street from him nor in his entire country. He's created the entire layout from mail order.
    I encouraged Roy to get inspired from your Union Pacific 844 video and acquire his own Heritage Fleet to operate on his layout.
    To learn more about Roy's "N-Scale Union Pacific Evanston Subdivision," you can follow this link to a recent video from his RUclips channel: ruclips.net/video/pT23n20rcyc/видео.html
    Once again, Dale and Karyn, thank you for bringing us such amazing videos on RUclips. I can't wait to see your next release!

    844 has had a few rebuilds and a few shake down runs without cars the last one it had was in 2004 or 5 when they did some work after a farewell trip for a route of the rio grande track in 1999 with the E units then they took it out of service for a rebuild and was done in 2004 or 5 and 844 was on one of my favorite shows called extreme trains in 2008 and on the show 844 was heading to Denver with the DD40X

    thanks for the info Toyman so that's why they put it extra pipe on the tool car artlockman. there's also a pipe that connects that to The General Car Howard fog behind it. the water has to be pumped into the treatment plant in the tool car and then has to be pumped into the boiler in the generator car to remove the impurities before it's pumped into the return pipe to be put into the water tender. as you may know there are also rebuilding the Joe Jordan water tender the Joe Jordan water tender was the leading cause of all the corrosion that was inside each of the locomotives. the problem with the water now a days is it has CFCs, calcium, limescale, rust, heavy metal, and chlorine in it is that stuff gets into the boiler pipes they rust and it has happened 4 times with each locomotive twice with 844. Ed wants to make sure that 844 lives to her next birthday and the last thing we want is a pile of gunk inside the boiler. if gunk gets inside the boiler it will rust the pipes and the engine will explode this is why the water has to be treated before it has to go into the boiler.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  7 лет назад +1

      WOW!!! THANKS!! Didn't know the details. WOW. Love to get video of the treatment equipment. (sort of a geek that way) God is in the details. From what I recall Ed Dickens stating on at least one of the reasons they had so many rail cars, including flat cars for moving the 4014 back to the steam shop was for the braking they needed for the route. Including what they would need for keeping the train in place, when it was at a standstill at one of their stops along the way. When they did the relocating of the 4014, so I would believe, that is the same thinking with the shake down runs of the 844! And it does look fantastic, the engine and tinders are inline with one another, and that lean as you were speaking of and I recall from seeing it in 2010 has been fixed extremely perfectly!

      My oldest daughter loved Shining Time Station! I grew up loving trains... mostly the old-time Choo-Choo's... But any train. I was fascinated with the way they followed the track, and the cars obediently followed the locomotive... The way the train would travel alongside the highway, and then veer off in a completely different direction, as though it had a mind all of it's own. The smoke seemed to wave Good-bye. Trains at a stand-still just seem alive.. like they are breathing... waiting.. Just always cool!

    Well unfortunately UP 3985 will probably never see excusion service again as Union Pacific officially retired it for excusion service in early 2020 after UP Big Boy 4014 restoration was completed which I believe UP 4014 uses UP 3985's oil tender so that is another reason why UP 3985 will probably see service again.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  2 года назад

      The big problem is it costs about 3 million to rebuild a big locomotive. More for 3985 as it has some larger boiler issues. When evaluating 3985 UP realized it would be a lot cheeper to rebuild one of three Big Boys that may be available. 4014 was perhaps the best candidate. So by restoring 4014 instead of 3985 they saved money while getting a lot more attention doing it. Will they ever rebuild 3985? Never say never but not anytime soon.

    Great video Dale!! I wonder if UP has plans that if 4014 is a success, to run all three steam engines in a train. Keeping pace with 844 at 80 MPH is a challenge. In the 70's, my Dad had a 72 Caddy. That car could easily keep pace with her. There are a few home movies my Mom shot out the window that 844 looks like it's just sitting there. A testimonial on how that Caddy LOVED to lay her ears back and fly!!

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  5 лет назад

      Well not all three. Not for years. 3985 is really bad. Needs more work than the Big Boy. And UP will not run it again unless it’s perfect. Like the 844 is now as well as 4014. Which, as of now, is for all intents a locomotive again. All new. Still much to do but it’s all in one piece. All together. Working on electrical wiring. Anyway ahead of schedule! Will be in Utah with 844 in May. Perhaps they will restore 3985 now. But not soon if they do.

  • @adamtebbs8783

    Hi there, that was an excellent and informative video as always. I can, however, confirm that 844 is not the only steam locomotive never to have been withdrawn and still operating on its original railway (and for its original company). I volunteer on the Talyllyn Railway in Wales and we still have No. 2 "Dolgoch" in regular passenger service 151 years since she was built in 1866, as is all the original passenger stock from the era! Our No. 1 "Talyllyn" of 1864 would also be a contender but, alas, she was withdrawn in the 1940s although she was returned to service in the 1960s.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  7 лет назад +1

      I need to find out more about the railways in Britain. And come look. So many great railways and steam locomotives. We both love the paint colors. (colours) A loco that goes back to 1864!! Amazing. Hard to find one that survives, yet alone still in service. There were several from that era (1870's) in Nevada when I was a child, loved them all. The Virginia and Truckee kept all of their locos in good repair, only because they had more money than they knew what to do with, and never scrapped anything. For the most part. But as with all things, the mines played out, railroad closed and the locos sold off. Most are in museums. In the states, only the UP kept operating steam after the 70's. D and RGW had steam in normal service in 1968. Not for historic reasons, just to do the job.

      Just semantics I guess. Major shopping. Normal servicing, but also a bit of back dating. And total rebuilding of valves and so on. But the word restore implies that something is dead or dying. 844 was not either. Just in need of a major overhaul. Either way, glad they did!!

    Holy Cow!! Twenty minutes of pure fun. The hotel looked like a lot of fun also. My wife and I liked to visit historical sites, and stay in quaint hotels. We visited Williamsburg several times, and always stayed in the period homes on the main street. You and Karyn would love it. I too would really like to see UP 844. I missed it when it came through my area on the way to Memphis. Looking forward to all your posts.

    so I have a question. why does the 844 have those side panels need the front half of the boiler, does is it make air flow thru there and cool down the outside.thanks

      Those have many names. My favorite is Elephant Ears. AKA Smoke lifters. Most of these locos were retro fitted with these. They attempt to lift the smoke away from the cab to keep the cab a bit more clear of smoke. Don't work all that well. SP solved the problem when they turned the loco around putting the cab at the front.

    Erosion in the firebox? Is that a by product of the chemical changes when fire burns making acid? I have the same problem with the outdoor grill the propane is eating the metal out to where the bottom rusts out prematurely. I hope that made sense, but I'm sure that they have figured more angles than I could ever dream of.

      IT erodes from the outside in.. The boiling water attacks the steel. They now treat the water to help with this. The biggest problem is that these engines spend most of their time cold and empty. better to keep them hot and full! But, as these are not "working" locomotives the best that can be done is cool and drain. But then the inside rusts....

      I think so! 618 is down, almost back. perhaps this year? 119 is a reproduction. Drawing a blank on what runs..

      WOW!! Will do. I moved to Tahoe like 20 years ago. Kept running into Mark Twain. Shopped for a house. First one was a place where Twain lived for a time. My favorite place to chill at the lake turned out to be Twains camp site there. Just over and over. Twain. Then was moving to up state NY. Didn't move. Long story. But went to see graves of old film stars that I have always admired. And there was Twain's grave. And his kids. That ended the Twain stuff. Weird.

      3985 should be running again but not until about 2022. First they need to get the big boy going. And it will take 3 years to rebuild 3985. Needs a new firebox and about 1000 stays. In worse shape than the big boy. But then all 3 not just running but restored.

      Hi!! We do have fun shooting and stuff. get a kick out of making these "little" videos. 4 years ago I figured to upload about 4 minutes of show per week. Now uploading like 30-40 minutes!!!! Gezzezzezz!! Oddly I can get that done. Would not have thought it possible. BAck in the 80's I was making a 22 minute show for local TV and somehow managed to get that done in spite of a full time job AND editing tape-to-tape
