I was studying for my mammalogy exam when I looked up mountain beavers and found this video. This beautiful encounter really cheered me up and gave me a little more love for these amazing animals. Thank you :)
that one's a juvenile. I have a bunch of them in my yard. the adults start to turn brown and the elderly ones are brown. the claws look like talons on the adults. the front feet go off to the side like a basset hound's feet. I love them. I named a couple of them after Leave it to Beaver character, the Beav. so I have Jerry and then there's Russell (rustle). the babies should be arriving soon. they're just now coming out of hibernation here in Port Orchard.
I just ran into one of these guys - I had no idea what it was :-) the one I ran into was super sweet - came up, sniffed my foot, checked me out, wandered off. I didn't know if it was a weird rat, muskrat, giant mole, bigfoot, or what :-)
Extremely interesting creatures; I've run into a couple and wrote about them but I've never seen one in the water like that. Disposition wise they seem to run the gamut from friendly like yours to downright ornery. Nice video. Jack Northwest Wildlife Online
Thanks, Gene. Call it karma or dumb luck, but it turns out this encounter with the mountain beaver is more significant than we first thought. A local biologist has stated this sighting is the first verified record of a mountain beaver in Butte County. Read more: cameratrapcodger.blogspot.com/
I live in downtown Port Orchard, WA in a house right above the main street that has traffic day and night. there are a few of those mountain beavers living in the back of my house. I see one every day, snapping branches off the maple trees and building dens with branches and dirt. they're quite industrious little things. I had never heard of a mountain beaver until I saw one. you were lucky to have it come up to you, because all the sites I looked at said they aren't very friendly.
Never seen one of these. I stumbled across this video trying to find sounds of North American beavers to prove to my friends the weird noises they make but couldn't find any videos of the sounds I heard these beavers making when I was camping. Can't compare it to any other animal I know of.
The mountain beaver is a common name for this North American rodent (Aplodontia rufa). It's not even closely related to the true North American beaver.
What a sweet little guy!

We have them out back. Fantastic! They'll be around long after we've consumed our way to extinction!

I want to start walking the flumes with you!! You always find animals on your adventures!
thanks...we have been lucky lately...hopefully our next encounter won't be with a cranky and territorial mountain lion!
Also known as the vegetable garden destroyer. Nothing can destroy a garden as fast as a mountain beaver.

Why do sewellel look different than a normal beaver

in the appalachian mountains, we call these "boomers"
Boomers are beavers. This is not a beaver.
