Yes! I became a believer two years ago and I am just starting to build my own Earthship and I will continue to do everything I can to encourage, help, promote, etc. anyone & everyone else to think of all of these things.

I am currently looking at the floorplans for a type of earth ship. And in my research I have come under the understanding that in order to do this I have to stop getting hair cuts. One of the problems a lot of places have is overpopulation.. I would love to see a multistory earthship building in the middle of an urban city environment..
Putting an earthship in a modern city might be too big a challenge, but what I could see is a rethinking of how we design cities to be in harmony with the land. We see these buildings can be amazingly diverse within a couple of successful form factors... it is conceivable that instead of concrete jungles, we'll have cities which emerge from the hillsides, with homes and businesses that exemplify a symbiotic relationship with the planet. It would be great to see this concept developed for commercial and mixed commercial-residential considerations, aside from simple rentals or model houses.
I've watched many 'Earthship' videos in the last month and so totally agree with this concept. I'd love to win the lottery this week and start looking for my happy place to begin construction next week. At my age though, my ship would just be getting settled into it's ocean and providing me with the ultimate lifestyle and I'd go toes up. Don't be a fool everyone like I've been, begin building for the future now. A very informative dialogue. Have to say though that Mr. Reynolds' body language was very defensive. He's turned away from the interviewer (although maybe this is his comfy way of sitting on a high armed couch that's too long in the seat for him), there's no eye contact with the camera or the interviewer but the brain is engaged with the questions I know he has answered so many times. Please keep continuing to improve on this great idea sir. Also I love that you're making this available to us lower income people through the app, gonna have to check that out, maybe I don't have to win the lottery after all. :)
Don't be so sure about not having to win the lottery , those things are expensive ( true , the Builders use all the scrap in the aera They can get Their hands on ) !!$$!! Look at the BIG picture here ! First , You HAVE to have the land to build on (it helps to for it to be somewhere You WANT to LIVE ) ! You have to be able to get all permits nec. ( not to mention a Architect to design one for You @ make everything fit @ work ) . Lets not forget the other systems either ... You know , solar , water ... Way more complicated than a regular house ( Its used more than once and it can't leak ... ) . You see the list just goes on and on ! One of my most favorites I’ve seen!! I love ‘cordwood’ (Montana girl) so love love love the all bottle styles, I’ve been excited to try cordwood with hempcrete! I think hempcrete could be even more practical with indoor moisture causing/related components, when you consider the anti mold and anti microbial properties?
My only gripe with the earthships is they seem to only design houses for desert and northern regions, I have yet to see them build anything that can survive the challenges of a hot humid climate where a sizable percentage of the human population actually lives. I would LOVE to be able to pull up stakes and move to Wyoming but both Family and job tie me here in East Texas where I am forced to question if such a design is possible in this climate.
Mike keeps bringing up an East Texas build here: ruclips.net/video/BHR5hyTBnSM/видео.html basically, gotta redo the math for the cisterns, and ensure you have overflows to not flood yourself in the case of too much rain also, the convection air-conditioning mechanism they designed with a back-tunnel and a 2nd or 3rd greenhouse can help you control humidity and temperatures: simply open/close the doors to the greenhouse plus, no skylights (less moving pieces), keep it simple
There is a Canadian branch of the company (they are licensed nationwide), and there are earthships in several sprvoices (to include Ontario). The most I've seen are here in Québec, there are quite a few here.
Survival model would be great for you, it's like a studio apartment, one room with just the basics. I've found a few videos that tour the design and build on one, but you might like the corner cottage better, a bit more room.

Hi folks, We've been inspired by earthship Biotecture and so interested in its development in certain climatic conditions and the enhancement of it's longevity. To that end, we would appreciate were anyone with relative experience help us with answer to any of the three questions as follows: 1. Google estimates the longevity of tires is anywhere between 50 to 80 years before total decay. Does this mean that an earthship could only last that long, given that tires are the predominant material in earthship? 2. Still on strength and longevity of tires, does tires get weaker when exposed to water, as in building with it in a swampy environment? 3. In the interest of tires strengthening and preventing ground water pollution, could the following measures harm or help tires longevity and environmental protection: A. What I would like to know is the cost of building such a eathship. I found videos claiming it is very cheap and articles giving a final price of a millionnaire mansion... I would love building one, but cannot do it myself so...
I would say you can do it yourself, addressing Michael Reynolds 6 points. The current stardard of earth ships are elitist in that they require copious amounts of labor and expensive materials and systems. They get around this with the pyramid scheme of students paying for the opportunity to build a home. What makes earth ships work is thermal mass, insulation, solar radiation, ventilation. Tandum paver retaining walls (belguard mega tandum) can be errected quickly, cheaply, using machinery. AireCrete as an insulator, dome, arch, interior wall material is diy and inexpensive. Used 260 gallon totes can be used for the rainwater storage. Seperation dry composting toilets negate the costly septic systems. The high costs can be worked out of the design. The survival 600 square feet models were quoted at 50k in one video, but I'm not sure if that is the all in cost. A Canada earthship was built at 70k materials, and with volunteer/ student labor. I like how everyones junk and cars are lying around in the open, because there are no garages or basement or attic storage.
if you decide to buy / live in the Earthship subdivision outside Taos, NM... with students that help build it WITH YOU... then you could probably get away with $100,000 for something simple. Nice set up easily $250k. You need lithium batteries for solar storage, wind capture with a really awesome turbine that's a work of art, water capture with sisterns in the back... and 10,000 tires... depending upon how fancy you get with appliances... most kitchens run about $10,000 worth of appliances, etc., bathrooms a lot less. I was there in 2017... love Earthships... and what Michael Reynolds has done... and I'm proud of the State of New Mexico for finally deciding to support his efforts. There was a LOT of issue with him 'not being on grid'. It was a fight but in the end Mike convinced them that sustainability is the way to go. Still had to get 'the power grid' set up...

I have read that Earthships are only appropriate in hot, arid climates and literally do not function properly in cold climates like Canada. I have also read that there are issues with the tires outgassing. I'm not saying I agree with either of these, but I would like to know if there is any rational or experiential basis for these concerns. Thanks.
Off gassing does accure if the tires are exposed to air or sunlight. If they are completely concealed then no off gassing accures. Earthships can survive in cold climates with a little adaption. But the passive solar design works anywhere there is sun and earthships just take it to the extreme.
Not true (what you heard)... watch RUclips videos where there are his classes... in colder climates the 'air intake' tubes that run behind the house and create the 'airflow' when they are opened (along with the upper windows to allow air to escape) just need to be longer... they're buried underground but the length is calculated to determine how many feet are necessary to bring the air to the desired temperature... 65 degrees or something. So... they've successfully built in cold climates.
Naked Dharma from my research if they properly place the tires as in no air and sun hits them they’ll be ok and they can survive in cold climates there’s literally a video of a man and his wife in their earthship in Canada and he’s growing tomatoes lol and it’s snow outside, they just have to modify the built in AC to match the climate, earthships can be built anywhere a home can be built(excluding like antartica lol)
Five (of six) simple steps: 1) In the morning (mid-morning, say 9-10 am), pound a stick in the level ground. Make sure the stick is exactly upright and won't topple over accidentally. 2) Observe where the shadow of the tip of the stick lands on the ground. Mark it by driving a peg into the ground at that place. If you do it in the morning as instructed, that place will be a northwesterly direction from the stick. (Southwesterly in the southern hemisphere.) 3) Tie a string around the stick, make it long enough to reach the peg, mark an arc from that peg around the stick in a northeasterly direction. (Note that our strategy depends on observing two shadows exactly the same length, one in the morning, one in the afternoon. The arc helps us find when the second shadow is exactly as long as the first shadow.) 4) In the afternoon (mid-afternoon, about 2-4 pm), wait and observe where the shadow of the tip of the stick lands once again on the arc. Mark it with a second peg. If you do it in the afternoon as instructed, that place will be in a northeasterly direction from the stick. (Southeasterly in the southern hemisphere.) 5) Draw a straight line between the two pegs. It will be an exact east-west line. 6) Use elementary geometry (or a carpenter's square) to draw a perpendicular line to the east-west line. That line will be an exact north-south line. You can check your work at night in the northern hemisphere by observing that the north end of the north-south line should be pointing to the star Polaris, however, this is not guaranteed to be exact since the north star changes over time. Also, if you have a watch or clock set to standard time, the stick's shadow at noon will point to within 15 degrees of north (south in the southern hemisphere). (It's not exact because time zones are about 15 degrees wide and many aren't centered on the local time meridian.) If your timepiece is set to daylight time, you have to wait until 1 o'clock because your timepiece is ahead of the sun by one hour. If you know exactly which minute the sun is directly overhead in your location (and your timepiece is accurate) you can get a much better result. Finally, if you have a compass, it too will be in agreement with your other methods, to an accuracy of about 10 degrees depending on magnetic declination in your area. Some maps will give you an exact magnetic declination for your area, which allows you to get a much better result.

What he's designing are "True smart homes" only they are not separate from the earth technology like houses that require electricity and programmed gadgets to act like sensors to the environment and turn on certain stored energies ( like tire walls are similar to solar collectors only they are their own natural battery that gets charged up every day. Sure it might not shout out factoids but if you listen it will Tell you stuff. They are wonderfully symbiotic smart homes
Would have loved it if you'd have interviewed him while walking around and showing the house, not on the couch. Honestly, I care little about his personal philosophies. I just want to see the house, learn what he did to make it, and why.
We live in a society, where today, now, everyone in surbia, whom wanted to live greener, could limit their power consumption to a 50 amp service (which does not exist for profit reasons, and tax reasons. that could really improve our consumption. However, it will never happen because of tax reasons. The local governements believe they would collapse, without the tax revenue from peoples 100 or 200 amp service. etc. So, many gotchas. The earth ship is a great thumbs up, at consumerism, going on in the building industry. Really, we need a "zip system", on particle board. What did you do, you created a product, that will not last, and coated it. Lets see that that looks like in 50 years. A former neighbor, put on a 10' overhang in front of his house, in upstate NY, then clad it with a few windows and a storm door, and rough cut, it was on the south side of his home, then wham.....his heating bill was 1/3 of what it was before, and he was living in a warmer home. We keep trying to live in a box, when our homes really need more natural insulation (air space around the home).
For most people, yeah. If you want to go back to the stone age, no. The annoying thing about Earthships is that most people are perfectly willing to accept the local grid alternatives for electricity, water and sewer. There doesn't seem to be any compromise with an Earthship. It's either off grid or it's not an Earthship.
dlwatib yup and the earthship needs far less power since it has it’s own water and ac system, the solar/wind energy will be purely for lights/TV, etc etc
I believe and love the concepts of earthships, but every one I have seen feels dark and a little claustrophobic to me. I would love to be able to spend a little time, even a few hours, in one to see if that would be the reality for me. I really need light spaces, windows, and not close, rounded ceilings. These structures are surely beautiful to look at, though.
Look up exploring alternatives channel on youtube. That channel has a tour of one that has many windows and looks very modern. I think the title says something about it being innovative lol.
I've seen so many of these vids on Earthships and most of them are in the desert to take advantage of the sun I guess. Almost all of the vids also show a few scattered plants in these green houses certainly not enough to sustain a person, never mind a family. The idea is good, the look is good, but I feel the reality is far from what they say. There's many issues they don't cover, fuel for cooking stove, drinking water, schooling for kids will certainly be a issue for a family, the cost isn't cheaper with all that custom glass, logs, steel insulated roof, water tanks and custom cabinets. No disrespect but this is not an easy build or living conditions in the middle of a desert. Good luck to those who try it.
lets see your list: * scattered green plants not enough to support a person - pff that area there can support 10 people if that space becomes vertical farming. Will not be as beautiful but who cares. Instead that space makes food. Is functional. * fuel for cooking stove - use an electric heater which gets power from solar but if you rely rely like fire, then compost can leak out gases which bun. That can be made from food scraps and enzymes. Ive seen a youtube video on a bio compost stuff which was producing gas for cooking. * drinking water - on the iss (international space station) people drink their own pee and perspiration. Because any water of any kind can be filtered, clean and drink. All it matters to be the H2O molecule - does not matter where it comes form as long as you can properly filter. So you can drink your pee just fine - but given this earth ship collects water with the roof you can process that too. * schooling - school should be online. This hole idea of dropping the kids to school, picking them up from school, clothe them, make breakfast - 2 hours a day wasted life - why? - is that the best way? clearly not - is rely rely rely retarded. Education should be done online. All of it. Universities, campuses all of it. Where is the sanity of putting 200 people in an amphitheater and 1 person in front teaches the same lesson over and over for decades - when that exact video can be seen on something like youtube - and all those people sit in place - at home, dont use another building which needs heat, cars, gas, roads, bridges, traffic, managers of the building, administrators, security... All of it is supper dumb. Rely dumb. For person to person interaction this earthsips should form villages such that your kids and your neighbour kids can play together, do experiments, hackathon, anything interactive is done in the same "neighborhood" since with traditional school is kind of the same. And when kids grow up they move to centers which make interaction easy - like hakatlons, labs, research centers, but not for participating in a course. The university and school is centered around courses and the teacher and that's boring, you can't play it back like youtube - in one word - dumb. Champuses should be more like what happens inside a hands on lab - where you rely touch stuff, talk to people, even a lot of that will be done trough virtual reality. If you can play a game for 8 hours - and feel "you are there" - then why would reality not be made such that is possible, accessible, easy - natural to so day to day stuff like lab work, design. You drive a car in a video game and feels real. The technology is here. The vision of what it rely needs to be for real is not. * custom glass - what is custom glass exactly? Glass cut to shape with a water jet cutter. You order this, you scan the hole if you don't know dimensions upfront - and they come exactly as you wish. Can even be fully automated. Like cement or anything else you buy. Getting glass should not be hard. Also you don't rely need custom glass. You can change your house to use prefabs if you so prefer. * logs - yes big problem in areas where they dont exist - since shipping many bulky log is gonna be more expensive then the logs themselves. But who said you need any logs. You just use something else available to you in the area - like pvc pipe filled with clay + rebar or filled with concrete + rebar etc. Who said only logs count? * steel insulated roof - there are many roofing products you can find an alternative just fine. Maybe is cheaper maybe not - but out of what is available sandwich panels are one of the cheapest i know of. * water tanks - hmm yes. but more expensive is all the piping and fittings for such a big house with garden inside and stuff. * custom cabinets - make them yourself and are 80% cheaper. RUclips is filled with tutorials. you can even make them out of foam, paint it and looks cool if given enough care. You can't tell the difference if is from ikea or made by somebody like yourself. Last point - eartships are not supposed to be in the middle of the desert. Somebody told me that was an experiment and they got 60% sun efficiency in Antarctica using solar panels. So is not because of the sun. You can find enough sun in many other places just fine. The desert presented in the video i think is just cheap real estate to prove living in super tough conditions - not something every earthship must do. Hard to keep them cool in the desert. Temperate climates will work better for earthsips. They can be made very good. We dont have any real limitations with them. Is not like putting satellites in orbit. This is easy. Can be made as good as you want it.

The 'Earthship' concept is awesome; yet still relegated to an 'elite' crew. Until it becomes 'affordable', and not prohibitive economically for labor and working poor communities, the concept will not bring any *significant* change in how the environment can be impacted for the better. I am in favor of the Earthship principles. The one I have never seen addressed is garbage. Compostable waste is not the issue. How is paper, plastic and metal dealt with outside of a municipality that has a recycling program? Additionally, I never see livestock taken into account. The visual that a person presents is just that, a visual, it may not conform to what you consider 'normal' and make you uncomfortable. Try to look further than the surface. There are some forms of art that make me uncomfortable too, Salvador Dali comes immediately to mind, but the doesn't mean it's not good. It's peoples thoughts and actions that count most though and that comes from the inside.
Just rewatch, try to go a bit deeper than the surface. You may find a reasonable, well thought out product of sustainability that might enhance your "experience." basically, gotta redo the math for the cisterns, and ensure you have overflows to not flood yourself in the case of too much rain
also, the convection air-conditioning mechanism they designed with a back-tunnel and a 2nd or 3rd greenhouse can help you control humidity and temperatures: simply open/close the doors to the greenhouse
plus, no skylights (less moving pieces), keep it simple

We've been inspired by earthship Biotecture and so interested in its development in certain climatic conditions and the enhancement of it's longevity. To that end, we would appreciate were anyone with relative experience help us with answer to any of the three questions as follows:
1. Google estimates the longevity of tires is anywhere between 50 to 80 years before total decay. Does this mean that an earthship could only last that long, given that tires are the predominant material in earthship?
2. Still on strength and longevity of tires, does tires get weaker when exposed to water, as in building with it in a swampy environment?
3. In the interest of tires strengthening and preventing ground water pollution, could the following measures harm or help tires longevity and environmental protection:
A. Wrapping the tires in plastic materials
B. Painting the tires with coal tar mixed with kerosene.

I would say you can do it yourself, addressing Michael Reynolds 6 points. The current stardard of earth ships are elitist in that they require copious amounts of labor and expensive materials and systems. They get around this with the pyramid scheme of students paying for the opportunity to build a home. What makes earth ships work is thermal mass, insulation, solar radiation, ventilation.
Tandum paver retaining walls (belguard mega tandum) can be errected quickly, cheaply, using machinery.
AireCrete as an insulator, dome, arch, interior wall material is diy and inexpensive.
Used 260 gallon totes can be used for the rainwater storage.
Seperation dry composting toilets negate the costly septic systems.
The high costs can be worked out of the design.
The survival 600 square feet models were quoted at 50k in one video, but I'm not sure if that is the all in cost.
A Canada earthship was built at 70k materials, and with volunteer/ student labor.
I like how everyones junk and cars are lying around in the open, because there are no garages or basement or attic storage.
if you decide to buy / live in the Earthship subdivision outside Taos, NM... with students that help build it WITH YOU... then you could probably get away with $100,000 for something simple. Nice set up easily $250k. You need lithium batteries for solar storage, wind capture with a really awesome turbine that's a work of art, water capture with sisterns in the back... and 10,000 tires...
depending upon how fancy you get with appliances... most kitchens run about $10,000 worth of appliances, etc., bathrooms a lot less.

love Earthships... and what Michael Reynolds has done... and I'm proud of the State of New Mexico for finally deciding to support his efforts. There was a LOT of issue with him 'not being on grid'. It was a fight but in the end Mike convinced them that sustainability is the way to go. Still had to get 'the power grid' set up...

I have read that Earthships are only appropriate in hot, arid climates and literally do not function properly in cold climates like Canada. I have also read that there are issues with the tires outgassing. I'm not saying I agree with either of these, but I would like to know if there is any rational or experiential basis for these concerns. Thanks.
Off gassing does accure if the tires are exposed to air or sunlight. If they are completely concealed then no off gassing accures. Earthships can survive in cold climates with a little adaption. But the passive solar design works anywhere there is sun and earthships just take it to the extreme.
Not true (what you heard)... watch RUclips videos where there are his classes... in colder climates the 'air intake' tubes that run behind the house and create the 'airflow' when they are opened (along with the upper windows to allow air to escape) just need to be longer... they're buried underground but the length is calculated to determine how many feet are necessary to bring the air to the desired temperature... 65 degrees or something.
So... they've successfully built in cold climates.

We need a simple way of figuring the east- West line... to set up an earthship how is it done ?
Five (of six) simple steps:
1) In the morning (mid-morning, say 9-10 am), pound a stick in the level ground. Make sure the stick is exactly upright and won't topple over accidentally.
2) Observe where the shadow of the tip of the stick lands on the ground. Mark it by driving a peg into the ground at that place. If you do it in the morning as instructed, that place will be a northwesterly direction from the stick. (Southwesterly in the southern hemisphere.)
3) Tie a string around the stick, make it long enough to reach the peg, mark an arc from that peg around the stick in a northeasterly direction. (Note that our strategy depends on observing two shadows exactly the same length, one in the morning, one in the afternoon. The arc helps us find when the second shadow is exactly as long as the first shadow.)
4) In the afternoon (mid-afternoon, about 2-4 pm), wait and observe where the shadow of the tip of the stick lands once again on the arc. Mark it with a second peg. If you do it in the afternoon as instructed, that place will be in a northeasterly direction from the stick. (Southeasterly in the southern hemisphere.)
5) Draw a straight line between the two pegs. It will be an exact east-west line.
6) Use elementary geometry (or a carpenter's square) to draw a perpendicular line to the east-west line. That line will be an exact north-south line.
You can check your work at night in the northern hemisphere by observing that the north end of the north-south line should be pointing to the star Polaris, however, this is not guaranteed to be exact since the north star changes over time.
Also, if you have a watch or clock set to standard time, the stick's shadow at noon will point to within 15 degrees of north (south in the southern hemisphere). (It's not exact because time zones are about 15 degrees wide and many aren't centered on the local time meridian.) If your timepiece is set to daylight time, you have to wait until 1 o'clock because your timepiece is ahead of the sun by one hour. If you know exactly which minute the sun is directly overhead in your location (and your timepiece is accurate) you can get a much better result.
Finally, if you have a compass, it too will be in agreement with your other methods, to an accuracy of about 10 degrees depending on magnetic declination in your area. Some maps will give you an exact magnetic declination for your area, which allows you to get a much better result.

We live in a society, where today, now, everyone in surbia, whom wanted to live greener, could limit their power consumption to a 50 amp service (which does not exist for profit reasons, and tax reasons. that could really improve our consumption. However, it will never happen because of tax reasons. The local governements believe they would collapse, without the tax revenue from peoples 100 or 200 amp service. etc. So, many gotchas. The earth ship is a great thumbs up, at consumerism, going on in the building industry. Really, we need a "zip system", on particle board. What did you do, you created a product, that will not last, and coated it. Lets see that that looks like in 50 years. A former neighbor, put on a 10' overhang in front of his house, in upstate NY, then clad it with a few windows and a storm door, and rough cut, it was on the south side of his home, then wham.....his heating bill was 1/3 of what it was before, and he was living in a warmer home. We keep trying to live in a box, when our homes really need more natural insulation (air space around the home).

The annoying thing about Earthships is that most people are perfectly willing to accept the local grid alternatives for electricity, water and sewer. There doesn't seem to be any compromise with an Earthship. It's either off grid or it's not an Earthship.

I believe and love the concepts of earthships, but every one I have seen feels dark and a little claustrophobic to me. I would love to be able to spend a little time, even a few hours, in one to see if that would be the reality for me. I really need light spaces, windows, and not close, rounded ceilings. These structures are surely beautiful to look at, though.
Look up exploring alternatives channel on youtube. That channel has a tour of one that has many windows and looks very modern. I think the title says something about it being innovative lol.
It's a man's home, so you may not be able to stay in it, but it should give you an idea of what you could do if you wanted to build one.
I've seen so many of these vids on Earthships and most of them are in the desert to take advantage of the sun I guess. Almost all of the vids also show a few scattered plants in these green houses certainly not enough to sustain a person, never mind a family. The idea is good, the look is good, but I feel the reality is far from what they say. There's many issues they don't cover, fuel for cooking stove, drinking water, schooling for kids will certainly be a issue for a family, the cost isn't cheaper with all that custom glass, logs, steel insulated roof, water tanks and custom cabinets. No disrespect but this is not an easy build or living conditions in the middle of a desert. Good luck to those who try it.
lets see your list:
* scattered green plants not enough to support a person - pff that area there can support 10 people if that space becomes vertical farming. Will not be as beautiful but who cares. Instead that space makes food. Is functional.
* fuel for cooking stove - use an electric heater which gets power from solar but if you rely rely like fire, then compost can leak out gases which bun. That can be made from food scraps and enzymes. Ive seen a youtube video on a bio compost stuff which was producing gas for cooking.
* drinking water - on the iss (international space station) people drink their own pee and perspiration. Because any water of any kind can be filtered, clean and drink. All it matters to be the H2O molecule - does not matter where it comes form as long as you can properly filter. So you can drink your pee just fine - but given this earth ship collects water with the roof you can process that too.
* schooling - school should be online. This hole idea of dropping the kids to school, picking them up from school, clothe them, make breakfast - 2 hours a day wasted life - why? - is that the best way? clearly not - is rely rely rely retarded. Education should be done online. All of it. Universities, campuses all of it. Where is the sanity of putting 200 people in an amphitheater and 1 person in front teaches the same lesson over and over for decades - when that exact video can be seen on something like youtube - and all those people sit in place - at home, dont use another building which needs heat, cars, gas, roads, bridges, traffic, managers of the building, administrators, security... All of it is supper dumb. Rely dumb. For person to person interaction this earthsips should form villages such that your kids and your neighbour kids can play together, do experiments, hackathon, anything interactive is done in the same "neighborhood" since with traditional school is kind of the same. And when kids grow up they move to centers which make interaction easy - like hakatlons, labs, research centers, but not for participating in a course. The university and school is centered around courses and the teacher and that's boring, you can't play it back like youtube - in one word - dumb. Champuses should be more like what happens inside a hands on lab - where you rely touch stuff, talk to people, even a lot of that will be done trough virtual reality. If you can play a game for 8 hours - and feel "you are there" - then why would reality not be made such that is possible, accessible, easy - natural to so day to day stuff like lab work, design. You drive a car in a video game and feels real. The technology is here. The vision of what it rely needs to be for real is not.
* custom glass - what is custom glass exactly? Glass cut to shape with a water jet cutter. You order this, you scan the hole if you don't know dimensions upfront - and they come exactly as you wish. Can even be fully automated. Like cement or anything else you buy. Getting glass should not be hard. Also you don't rely need custom glass. You can change your house to use prefabs if you so prefer.
* logs - yes big problem in areas where they dont exist - since shipping many bulky log is gonna be more expensive then the logs themselves. But who said you need any logs. You just use something else available to you in the area - like pvc pipe filled with clay + rebar or filled with concrete + rebar etc. Who said only logs count?
* steel insulated roof - there are many roofing products you can find an alternative just fine. Maybe is cheaper maybe not - but out of what is available sandwich panels are one of the cheapest i know of.
* water tanks - hmm yes. but more expensive is all the piping and fittings for such a big house with garden inside and stuff.
* custom cabinets - make them yourself and are 80% cheaper. RUclips is filled with tutorials. you can even make them out of foam, paint it and looks cool if given enough care. You can't tell the difference if is from ikea or made by somebody like yourself.
Last point - eartships are not supposed to be in the middle of the desert. Somebody told me that was an experiment and they got 60% sun efficiency in Antarctica using solar panels. So is not because of the sun. You can find enough sun in many other places just fine. The desert presented in the video i think is just cheap real estate to prove living in super tough conditions - not something every earthship must do. Hard to keep them cool in the desert. Temperate climates will work better for earthsips.
They can be made very good. We dont have any real limitations with them. Is not like putting satellites in orbit. This is easy. Can be made as good as you want it.

The 'Earthship' concept is awesome; yet still relegated to an 'elite' crew. Until it becomes 'affordable', and not prohibitive economically for labor and working poor communities, the concept will not bring any *significant* change in how the environment can be impacted for the better. This needs to move *beyond* being just a 'fad' and solely related to 'alternative lifestyle' proponents.

I am in favor of the Earthship principles.
The one I have never seen addressed is garbage. Compostable waste is not the issue. How is paper, plastic and metal dealt with outside of a municipality that has a recycling program? Additionally, I never see livestock taken into account.

The visual that a person presents is just that, a visual, it may not conform to what you consider 'normal' and make you uncomfortable. Try to look further than the surface. There are some forms of art that make me uncomfortable too, Salvador Dali comes immediately to mind, but the doesn't mean it's not good.
