Meg..I just bought my first 10/ 5 gallons buckets for planting some vegetables this summer. We live in a HOA community so can’t put it in the ground in the yard. Wish me luck. Lol
I think im Going to try tomato, green peppers, cucumbers, and maybe carrots. All this excitement just from watching you and the family. Haha

I save all my fall leaves to use in our chicken run all winter. I’m in the North East and have pretty harsh winters, so our run has a roof. The leaves are stored next to the run where we can easily toss arm loads in through out the winter. Hens break it down into soil really well.

You and your family are such hard workers. Meg seems to always be making food, editing and washing work-stained clothes. Buggy is the cutest! Not sure what kind of camera you use, but a bunch of resellers use a GoPro attached to the front strap of a backpack or something, which frees both their hands and allows the viewer to see. Just a thought that may help with editing time 🤔 (and tax deductible). Ttfn 👋🏻

I have to admit, I am struggling with the whole compost thing. I’m a little low on man power and green material. My compost consists of shavings and chicken manure (summer) straw and chicken manure (winter), leaves, grass clippings (think small yard) and fruit and veg scraps. This is what I work with my chickens rarely get into the ring to scratch around, and frankly, I’m 66 and pretty crippled. Is there hope? Suggestions are more than welcome!

Hello from TN. I guess it would depend on how much you want to have. It would depend on the size of your garden, or do you have raised beds. I'm a soon to be 72 year old. I have more than one compost pile. They are not Large. They are at different stages. I have Rabbits. I Can eat them, but they are mainly for their Poop. Rabbit poop won't "burn" the roots! So you can use it very fresh! Collect it in an area all by itself. It can be added to other things or used totally by itself. A little in the Planting hole, then Side dress each plant during the season. Don't try to "Fertilize" the ENTIRE garden area. Over time, it will get fertilized. You can take a "Screen" and get the stuff out of your compost pile, that hasn't broken completely down, and use what has! Try to think Outside the box! Set up the screen very near a compost pile.
I know how you feel. I have had 4 leg surgeries. My back was broken years ago. I have rheumatoid arthritis. I have also had surgery on my arms. Just never give up! Make beds very close to your house. Figure out how many chickens you need. I have 6 Rabbits. I know I can't feed the world, but I can pretty much feed myself. Make a seed starting corner in your house, or make a One panel hoop house for starting your plants! ALWAYS read the comment section of these videos! There are a lot of great ideas there! Hope this helps you! GOD bless

Sounds like you have everything in place for this system to work but maybe the chickens aren’t hungry enough to want to scratch in the ring. If I give the chickens a feeder with free choice food they won’t touch the compost. I feed them in the ring and they only get fed once a day. It’s taken some watching and taking notes but if they’re hungry towards the end of the day they all get in the ring and go to work looking for bugs and scraps.

Are you adding water as you build pile as Billy/PermaPastureFarm does? Maybe I missed it.
Oh, I think he does that after the first pile has moved on into a second cone-shaped pile. The 18-day method.

Just realized, today, that your chicken coop doesn't have a roof over the non-egg laying area! Suspect that is why I had an easier time, using the deep litter method concept, aka massive compost pile, with side barriers to hold the depth in. We used non-yellowing greenhouse type fiberglass panels, or something like that, over top. The entire top was a lean to type roof. There was no dark separate place because we had no need for them to be quiet/in the dark or trapped in the egg laying area. Or whatever reason coops are commonly made that way.
(I see most stationary chicken coops built as a box with an open part attached to the box. All over the country and world. Not sure what that reasoning is, but very very cold winters would make sense to me? Lumber prices? Except I've seen coops built this way for many decades. It was more important for us that a 6 foot tall human could comfortably walk around, so never tried the box and screen attachment coop build.)
The egg laying area we used, both in 8b and in 6b, was just a big long table along the back wall, with egg laying boxes. A solid back wall and 1/4 the side coop walls (in the 6b location), roosting bars across from that, with a real ladder access. (Do not recommend losing a ladder to a chicken coop, just one of those couple weeks temp solution things that ended up being there for years.) Rain blew in from the screened walls, and when pouring off the hillside some overflow dampened the bedding/compost, but it didn't ever rain directly into the coop. Dryer is probably easier to maintain, for a stationary chicken spot.
Main thing I would do differently after the years with some coops, is save up for the huge 1/2 inch wire rolls and do all the non solid wall frame sections with that. Vs chicken wire on the upper half. Too many things climbed that fit through chicken wire. Including snakes, which was wild to catch in the act.
Only really an issue if I had unusually young baby chicks and their foster mom/s in there. Otherwise the issue was the chickens all telling us, at the top of their lungs, they were after something exciting and potentially tasty. Florida taught me to have a deep non-diggable footing (cement blocks dropped long way into a trench all the way around), or ya know, put the whole thing on a hillside rock layer, in Kentucky. lol

I do my own version of chicken yard composting and it produces wonderfully! Can’t tell you how long it took me to experiment with this outside the box technique- it was part of me realizing I could ( and enjoyed) experimenting with how to get the best results in my context. My encouragement to others? Just try it- maybe small scale, but give it a try. Totally agree on the Leaves insight- I mostly put vines or sticks on the bottom to allow air in.
