Absolutely correct. Between 2015 and 2019, MLS grew into an iteration where you needed a very big whale for an owner: i.e. billionaire. Once Sac got that, it was finally a done deal.
@Davideo Tapes With SA, they don't have a solid stadium plan. Their current stadium is way out of town, and has nothing really around it. Along with this, there aren't any clubs/good restaurants in the stadium, unlike every MLS stadium. Also, they took out their bid, and when the original San Jose Earthquakes wanted to move, San Antonio shut them down, so they moved to Houston and became the Dynamo. If San Antonio wants a team, they need a better stadium/business plan. Final point about them is that they fit more culturally with Liga MX than MLS, so it'd honestly be better if Concacaf will go for it. I say this as both a SAFC supporter and an Austin FC supporter. That being said, I think MLS wants Sacramento to be a team, but it's the owner's fault, not the league's (but I could be wrong), but I do think Sacramento definitely deserves to have an MLS team.
I was pretty connected with the expansion scene back when my team, FC Cincinnati, got a bid. The big reason why they didn’t get in at that time was because they had a shift in ownership. Jed York, owner of the 49ers joined after the FCC & Nashville bid. It set them back a couple years.
Thanks to COVID, their inaugural season in MLS will be 2023. At least they'll be in, but the "hits" nonetheless keep coming. UPDATE: Now that Ron Burkle has pulled out as lead investor and their president stepped down today, who knows anymore if this is gonna happen now.
Hello from Liverpool, England. I'm a new viewer and was surprised how low the attendance figures are. How do they compare to the most popular sports over there? Also, do you make videos on women's football? If not, can you recommend a similar style channel? Thanks.

I would love a promotion relegation system, maybe approaching 30 teams in the league kinda acts like 2 leagues in one. Almost as if you combined the top two leagues and had everyone take a go at it instead of two 15 team leagues. Maybe that creates some interesting match ups with more competition. Just some thoughts
Maybe expand it to 36 than split it into two. expand it to 40 from there than have a 7 team playoff 3 game series and the best team in the lower division from each conference getting that 7 seed.
Ok let me start off by saying I love your channel! But I want to hear your opinion on Charlotte. It's a little interesting because they are not building soccer specific Stadium. Do you think they will be able to fill that massive stadium?
Why would the owner, just like Arthur Blank with Atlanta United and Atlanta Falcons, spend on a soccer specific stadium when he already has a stadium that he can easily modify to have both teams play on it? Another stadium around the size of LAFC stadium is roughly around 300+ million. Plus the 350 million he already spent on a franchise fee, plus players, staff etc. we are talking close to a billion dollars. It is easier and leaves money to spend elsewhere when you already have a stadium than can be easily modify. As for attendance, who knows.
Revs also play at Gillette Stadium. They only fill the lower level on a good day. I think Charlotte will be ok. It’s should have a great fan base! Interesting to see how Charlotte and Nashville do going forward!
Great vid. Honest opinion about sac town. Still going to have good attendance, won’t make playoffs though. Probably going to be 2nd best team in California. Just my opinion.
MLS: Yes lets build two more fake clubs in cities that already have soccer teams (LA and NYC) and some more artificial clubs. Fans: Um but we have teams with rich history like NY Cosmos and Michigan Stars FC MLS: Lmao, what? nah thats stupid
Great video and nice setup. Can you talk about Charlotte getting an expansion team and the markets MLS missed out on? Also give your predictions for the season right before it starts
Sucks this fell through! I was stoked for it and was ready to chat til my voice was gone. I dislike basketball and the kings are a joke of a franchise anyway.
Sacramento failed to make MLS earlier because of money. All teams that jumped them had far more fiscal backing which makes up about half of the checklist (lower level attendance and stadium plans make up other half).Geography isn't also completely the right argument. There were most East teams needed, but SAC/PHX/LV all would have fallen foul of the West Coast issue. San Jose before the last few teams were added were one of the most geographically isolated teams in MLS. The closest road game was almost a 400 mile trip for them.
Even if I'm already a fan of another MLS team, I'm definitely getting a republic jersey when they join. I've always loved the badge and the color scheme. This team is really easy to like
First that all its good to see you back and its really nice the stage with the jerseys wall. The team at 6:32 is Jesuit High School in New Orleans celebrating a state championship. Patrick Mullins came from there. That looks like Tad Gormley Stadium, so I’m guessing that picture is from 2012 or 2013. Jesuit used to be one of the best high school soccer programs in the nation, especially in the late 2000s. Recently, their dynasty has been displaced by fellow Louisiana team St. Paul’s in Covington.

Btw can u make a video about where you think the last two mls teams should be personally I think it should be Phoenix (cause no duh) and Calgary (I know it's an odd choice but Calgary is actually the biggest city in Canada behind Montreal and it kinda makes me tilt my head people go for teams in Vancouver over it. Plus it would balance out the Canadian teams, further grow the game there and firmly establish the MLS as NORTH America's top-flight leauge, not just the States and the obligatory Canadian big three's top flight leauge.) As for Vegas and OKC we need to wait on the former and see how the knights and raiders do with locals and it's hard to measure success of a market when your team is wining and attracting a lot of bandwagoners right now, and the latter is a reletivley Niche market that probably can only maintain basketball for the time being. And Im against detorit expansion for obvious reasons.
Sacramento is a better market then any of the ones selected before it. Should have been team 24. Hell, they were trying to get the Chivas USA slot but were blocked by Garber.
Mls needs to have an mls 2, this table is too big and there are far too many teams. 20 is more than enough having a first and second division and still maintaining that Mls status will attract viewers and make sure that there’s actual competition in the league
youri st jean the usl is technically league 2, i know what you mean, but they can’t just kick some of the bad teams to a second division especially since they paid their way into the league(i read that the 30th team will have to pay around $325,000,000). this league isn’t like others, it keeps it competitive with drafts, salary caps, and limited designated players. all teams could win under the right management
You forgot to mention that the USL Pro final drew a better TV rating then the MLS cup that year on the strength of Sacramento Valley/San Joaquin Delta TV market.
I think both will get expansion teams within the next 5 years or so. There are interested groups that seem to be slowly checking all the boxes and getting their infrastructure/permits in place. It seems MLS wants indoor stadiums for both, and the Vegas group is already planning on one. Both would be home runs for the league, IMO. I’d like to see San Diego get a team, too.
