This History For Humans episode teaches the major challenges President Adams faced in office and how the young republic was growing increasingly divided between parties as a result. It covers the XYZ Affair and how it led to a Quasi-War and even though other Federalists, like Alexander Hamilton, pushed Adams to go to war, Adams looked for a peaceful solution. It then covers how the Alien and Sedition Acts were aimed to curb a potential threat from immigrants, but really to punish the Democratic-Republicans and how they continued to protest against the acts for being Unconstitutional.
With a fun quiz, it teaches how a brawl broke out in Congress during the time- which shows how divided the country was becoming and how fragile the republic was. It closes with how Jefferson won the election of 1800 and the peaceful transition of power where Adams, once again, put the republic and people, before his power and his party. A lesson more important than ever.
