- It was the world’s most expensive album ever sold. And perhaps the most mysterious.
Almost no one has heard Wu-Tang Clan’s seventh studio album, “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.” Only one copy - physical or digital - exists.
Now, some members of the public will have the rare chance to hear a curated, 30-minute selection of its tracks at listening sessions in Australia next month.
“You hear talk about once-in-a-lifetime opportunities: This is probably one of them,” said Tasmania’s Museum of Old and New Art, the Australian museum that is preparing to exhibit the 2015 album, which is not available to stream in full anywhere online. According to one Wu-Tang member, it even includes an appearance from Cher.
Imagine managing to live all the way to 2103 dreaming of the day this album is finally publicly released, and it turns out it sucks.
Or go to the museum now!
I feel like, since I was born in the 90’s, I have a chance at living that long. Idk for sure, but I wonder if I can keep myself chugging along, waiting for wu tang clan day.
It's Wu Tang bro. It can't suck.
Utopia pov
Spoiler alert
Insane wackadoodle behavior responded to with insane wackadoodle behavior, album better have the map to the holy grail hidden in the beats, thats the onlything to justify this.
I'm not sure a map to a wooden cup would make it much better
WHOA are you missing the point altogether.
Skrelli bought the album so no one else could enjoy it...because he's a damn sociopath, like the freakin' Grinch Who Stole Christmas.
Pay attention. The only "wachadoodle" is Skrelli.
@@le_th_You're the one who should pay attention. Shkrelli bought the album, but the fact that there were no other copies, all the weird restrictions, all that? That shit wasn't Shkrelli's idea. That was ENTIRELY Wu-Tang. If it didn't end up with him it would have just ended up in the hands of some other rich asshole.
If you wanna blame anyone, blame RZA. It was his idea.
@@le_th_Yeah and playing it for 30 minutes at a time, can't play it in full, and stored away as the only copy is TOTALLY letting people enjoy it 😂
The wackadees got fooookeds by the wackadooos
Those conditions were void the instant the court siezed it because whoever bought it at the liquidation auction did not agree to those conditions.
No because you buy the media "as is" with existing conditions attached.
There may or may not be some potential sneaky ways around the contract laws between countries, however none of that matters if the purchaser simply agrees to the requirements in spirit, which is the case here. In fact the whole reason the museum bought it is because they consider the rules to be an intrinsic part of the artwork.
It’s possible that these conditions aren’t legally binding but the museum is honoring the request anyway.
It would be so incredibly perfect if someone snuck recording equipment into the museum
Or hacking equipment
What's the point in pirating a terrible album anyway? This would be a museum heist with no chance of profit.
@@michaelvossen7253”yeah the album sucks you guys have no Reason to do that” good job Tasmania museum you almost got us
@@michaelvossen7253 trying to throw us off the trail huh
@@michaelvossen7253art can suck and still be valuable
whoever manages to pirate this shit is gonna be a legend
The historians in the far future are going to go crazy with this one
In your historical terms what does the word far mean to you? Cause to me 100 years ain't that far historically
@@jordanyoung6604 well consider, you have to wait 100 years, but now you're only at the event. Historians aren't involved yet because it's only finally happening "now" a century from now. So then you have to wait even *longer* for THAT to become history and THEN you have how far in the future we'd have to be.
@@z-beeblebrox I get where you're coming from but putting an exact date on how long it takes history to become history is as metaphysically analytical as it gets, there is no exact number, it's completely arbitrary based on a million factors most of which are based in human psychology which making guesses based on statistics about has proven to be inconsistent at best and a shot in the dark at worst
I'd rather nick the album and the manuscript, and then upload all of it to the internet. At least then more can enjoy it rather than this asine behaviour
I’d go to jail for the cause
FOR THE PEOPLE!!!!
If it was some mediocre pop industry plant, I'd agree with you. But I'm here for Wu-Tang Clan leaving a mark in history. Imagine if someone nicked the Mona Lisa and took it to the nearest FedEx Kinko's and made color copies. You gotta respect the art.
If it's ever mass produced, it should be only via 8tracks. 😅
@@notorioustoribut the Mona Lisa has been copied, many many times. But the original is still valuable because no copy can match it. If the original is great, no copy will diminish it.
@@notorioustoriexcept the Mona Lisa has been stolen many times and copied thousands of times over history. The only reason it’s even popular is because it got stolen and when it was found they made a big deal about it
@@plasticmyelin this isn't always the case.
Istg this hotel better be Continental Casablanca or else I'm going in and retrieving this manuscript
I wanna know if the clause stating that Bill Murray and the Wu Tang Clan are allowed to steal the album back via heist is still in the contract
This is definitely something MONA would do (that’s the acronym) MONA is known for doing some out of place or abstract stuff and it’s almost always a good laugh
I think at this point it would be more beneficial to just play the album in any way people want. Screw the legal ramifications. Is the album really that bad Wu-Tang?
they’re waiting for violations to the contract to sue for hundreds of millions of dollars
@@ryansreaction I don't understand how we can live in a world where its illegal to play music because someone "owns" an nft.
@@declaringpond2276Well they're the copyright owners. Same thing as Warner Bros claiming your youtube revenue when you play Despacito in the background
@@votch2798 Thats not copyright, thats just greed.
But anyways, if our purchases arent "ownership" then their "purchases" arent "ownership"
@@declaringpond2276It's a physical object.
I wish I was a fly on the wall at MONA meetings. They come up with the most unhinged stuff. This seems kinda tame compared to the rest.
We paid four million for an album? Is that what you mean? 🇦🇺
Nope. You paid for a $4M album that you can't listen to.
i think the album just borrowed for a while? or am i wrong?
Hah, no. The digital art collective PleasrDAO bought the album, but has loaned 30 minutes of music to MONA for 9 days. Folks can book “listening parties” during the loan period, but people won’t be able to go to the museum to have a listen on a whim.
Bigger question; Why?
Simple answer: because they're rich, and you're poor. It doesn't matter how much money you earn, if you're not playing with billionaire's money, you're poor.
They simply live in another plane of reality. It's why I just laugh at people standing for them, like bro, they didn't get to where they are by giving handouts and spending their money. They take bailouts and spend YOUR money.
Sorry, just got little heated.
@@janematthews9087 I'm not asking why rich people do stupid shit. I'm asking why would anyone create something with those kind of requirements
Because Wu-Tang wanted only one rich person to own their album I guess.
Honestly I think it makes them look like douchebags.
Art is for the rich.
@@tllgestalt1942 I disagree art is for anyone to enjoy, I can go to a museum and enjoy paintings or sculptures and remain poor
This report is excellent. Thank you.
I give it 3 years max before it’s out on the internet in full
It already is. Shkreli played it on livestream in entirety
@@TheTeremaster lmao
No band ever sold out like that.
It's really no different from "Connections", where capital meets art meets PR.
So the stipulation is that the album can't be "commercially exploited" for 88 years, however it can be *released free* or played at listening parties. They never said it can't be released, just says it can't be used to make money.
Wu Tang wanted to be artists in the medieval sense
Its already on the Internet you don't have to wait 88 years 😂
This is the best most amazing information on hiphop !!
Imagine buying something just to get it taken and sold for double💀
Ong someone is def gonna leak it before hand
its gonna leak really soon
i am Australian and i forgot Tasmania is a part of Australia
i am now once again disappointed
Love the Watch Dogs 2 mission that paradies this
Wait where are the pharmaceutical executives😂
Martin Shkreli is a pharmaceutical executive lol
He’s Pharmabro. He is a terrible person.
Nooooo don't make our products generic 🥺😩🥺 we said there can only be one ☝️🥺
(I do realize the dudes a phrama exec but this is funnier and not wrong)
Thanks I have literally no idea who any of the people mentioned are😂
If youre gonna open it and play it for the public just play it once front to back for us
I bet I could lockpick it
Well, that’s perfect for MONA. They’re all about being controversial and weird. Definitely worth a visit if you’re ever in Tassie.
If there isn’t at least one crappy heist for this record I would be SHOCKED
Well if you still want to follow the guidelines, you can just play the whole album except the final few seconds, therefor you aren't playing the whole album.
Aaand it took me less than a minute to find the torrent of it.
Not Martin just keeping into on this table like keys or tv remote
This is some Percy Jackson fanfic type lore right here
Connections is not weird, I happen to enjoy it. 🤨
Who let the SCP containment protocols for this anomaly, leak?
I can’t wait to see in 2099:
“Man sued by the estate of the Wu-Tang clan for listening to an album he found in an old closet.” 😂
The future civilizations will either be very puzzled by or very protective of this artifact
‼️Time for us to hit up Bill M so he can rescue this album..!!‼️
That shits getting riped and posted on a list media site before you can count to 4
I don't think music can ripen
Oh, so that watchdogs 2 mission was based in real events
Honestly this whole situation just makes Wu-Tang look bad.
Wu-Tang about to become a fallout religion after the nukes drop
Folks, collect your covert recording devices. It'll soon be time to visit the Tasmanian Museum of Art Old and New.
Why do people think that this is a bad idea
I think it’s cool
Fucking awesome. They managed to build modern day pyramids. Legacy.
This feels like an Allegri's Miserere moment
Well seeing as there is no contract to the museum why don't they just play it and make copys
Rich people play truly stupid games.
The fact they are doing all this for a Wu-Tang Clan album of all things is really funny to me.
some museum staff member is definitely gonna sell all of the different 30 minute recordings for a couple thousand
well theire is an idea for a comedical funny heist movie starring popular rappers trying to steal this album in somebodys mind
LOL Calling out the NYT Connections game creators! ; D
But is it good (probly not especially in 2103 the culture would probably change so much by then)
Leak it, i mean that!
Classic Tassie MONA behaviour 😂
"...stored in a vault in a Moroccan hotel." Wait, what?
I lost a lot of respect for the Wu-Tang Clan when they did this. Making an exclusive album that only one rich asshole gets to have access to do is a slap in the face to all of their fans. The fact that it's kinda sorta available at a museum does not excuse them for that.
This is a completely different level of gatekeepinh
Ah yes the guy who made insulin like a billion percent more expensive for people who desperately need a life saving drug. Nice.
gentlemen a new heist before gta6
Who's stopping it?
Literally who's gonna do anything about a guy playing some album?
If it's redistribution then it's copyright, but just playing music is what it's made for
Shkreli is so scummy. Him being in jail is true justice.
Apparently it was organized by one member of the Wu Tang Clan and the other members were a little miffed because they thought it was the guys solo album
i thought bro was rapping
So how long before hackers leak this?
Pirate bay anyone?
Imagine if you paid all that money and had all that security and then find out the album turns out to be just meh.
So play the album minus one random song at a time on an internet radio with random IPs blocked at a time so it's not 'public.' Or rules lawyer it some other way.
Not that it matters, no music is worth this.
Finally, the One Piece.
Could be leaked ngl
Hey! I knew this one!
This runs antithetically to the nature of music itself. It's meant to be shared, enjoyed, and interpreted by the listeners. Sure it's within the artists right to do this, it's just a stupid decision and a bad look.
Quick question why?
Wu tang!
Just why
Self important much?
That museum has some funny shit it as well just look it up
But why
What
Pharma Bro doesn’t deserve that album, morally
Ahat did the guy go to jail for? Was it nfts?
If you google Hype, this pops up.
When that bozo went jail why didn’t the Rza buy that album and and release it to the fans what up with weird shit that’s in process now?
Talk about stupid somebody just needs to go in there copy the stupid thing and release it.
The crazy thing about this is that there was no time to mention how terrible of a person Martin shkreli is
wtf was the song that good ?
What kind of "I'm sniffing my own farts" bullshit is this?
Any art project that requires a legal threat of punishment to continue existing in its presentef form is fucking lame. I love Wu, but this isnt the thoughtful statment they think it is.
Thats so stupid
Rich people are so dumb
Yeah no. Thats not arty, thats just a scam.
Is it even really that good? Or just an expensive piece of crap that’s expensive for the novelty of it?
TRUMP 2024
This has to be the worst album ever
We could have someone with musical talent and photographic memory go and put what they hear into an ai then it might sound the same
And the music is mid
This is so stupid
