I have been a medical professional for over 30 years. People can hardly sit still today without a cellphone or a handful of pain pills. I can't imagine the restraint it would take to keep the body still enough to perform such a procedure. I'm sure the bilateral Pneumothorax would render the victim unconscious , but it does require a very good skill set to break the ribs at the thickest place, closest to the spine. Also splitting the sternum centerline for maximum rib spreading to properly honor the god is VERY QUESTIONABLE . I'm going with some seriously butcher, hack job ! No " surgical " procedures here folks. My ruling , massive propaganda amplified on steroids for spreading fear. Pretty sure the lungs can only be inflated within a sealed chest cavity, with the diaphragm pulling down. As soon as the chest cavity is opened the lungs could not be inflated by that person and would just lie there like a couple of deflated bagpipes. So death would be by suffocating and would be fairly quick, plus the massive blood loss, so the person would be unconscious within a minute or so..probably.
I was thinking that after a sat job at a butchers hacking through bones (ribs) wouldn’t allow the victim to be alive long Surgeons use rib cutters akin to garden secetures to cut ribs in open heart ❤️ surgery
Yeah if the chest cavity is punctured any attempt to inflate lungs will just pull in air through the wound (punctured lung). If this was a thing, the victim wouldn't survive long and it would be more for display.

As soon as the thoracic cavity is penetrated you create a pneumothorax, the victim would be unable to breathe and die rapidly. I’m sure it would still be very painful up until that point.
There is an excellent paper recently published on the Blood Eagle. It is titled "An Anatomy of the Blood Eagle: The Practicalities of Viking Torture". A most complete examination of this type of torture/execution.
It seems to me that once you start chopping off the ribs from the spinal column, the victim would be unconscious, and therefore, unable to excite the crowd with their pain. This method might be very painful, but also very swift.
One horrible execution method that was definitely used was that they had a statue of a brass bull with a trap door and the victim was forced inside and the door closed and a fire was built underneath.
I started watching this and then I got a job that put me in bed much earlier. I got lost and now I wish I could get it on box set . Just to see how they performed this ritual.

Even more cruel was the way Americans killed over two million Vietnamese by burning them alive with NAPALM. This is seldom mentioned and most Americans seem not to know much about it. Also, the lynchings of American blacks by middle class whites during the first half of the XX century would be an interesting topic. The black person would be hanged, then the body barbecued and exposed to the cheering crowd, which included small children taken by their parents to watch the spectacle.

There was another execution the Vikings used. I can't remember what it was called, Viking's revenge maybe? The victim was tied down face up, the abdomen was sliced open and all the intestines were pulled out and dumped on the victim's chest. People died in around half an hour, more if they were strong.
May have really happened, but probably not often. And the victim would have died quickly. If you think about some of the tortures that occurred in the 13 th to 18 th centuries ( they really did happen) it's not impossible to think such cruelty occurred in the Viking era.
I always wonder what sort of minds think up these horrors to inflict on other humans?Perhaps we are the animals and so called animals are the decent ones. This is absolutely revolting if true.

Some years ago I can across a different description of how the Blood Eagle was performed by Vikings. A slice was made across the abdomen just below the ribs, then the diaphram was cut. Then the executioner would reach, under the sternum, to grab the windpipe and in a powerful rip, pull the lungs out through the abdominal slice. The lungs would lay on the victim's abs like a set of wings. An experienced person could perform this in a matter of seconds.
@@jplonsdale7242 My description above is a Viking account or came from a witness. I came across it pre-internet so no links. I've not seen accounts of other cultures describing it the same way. The Aztec would rip out the heart but that was a totally different ritual.

As usual really enjoy the channel another thought provoking piece By the way my execution he'll would have been to be flogged around the fleet - death by up to 200+ lashes of the cat. A swift encounter with the guillotine would be the best way to go.
It would take a level of surgical skills to detach each posterior rib from the spinal cord. I would otherwise assume that the axe would be used as the "bludgeon" to hack away the connections. During that process, it is likely that the victim would go into hypovolemic shock, well before the ribs were split and pulled to an "open" position. By the time the thorax was opened to get access to the lungs, the victim was no longer breathing because inflation of the lungs would be impossible. We assume that this method would cause unbelievable pain. However, I don't think the pain would last long, perhaps about 3-5 minutes before shock intervened. Crucifixion would be even worse, because shock would not always intervene immediately. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA) Retired surgeon
