I cannot help but think that Pan-Africanism is a bad ideology, created by Americans who oversimplified the identities and history of Africa and those who live there into quite literally black and white terms. In Europe we understand that the Germans, French, Slavs, the Spanish, Italians, Greeks and English are all different people with unique histories, why dont we do the same for Africa? Perhaps its the lack of defined nation states, perhaps for other reasons. My criticism of the similarity of the African flags is sort of similar to why i don't like the array of uninspired tricolours in Europe.

Nkrumah put in a lot of resources to ensure anyone representing Ghana shined like a star. The fact is it was Nkrumah of Ghana who actually put Pan-Africanism into practice. When Ghana gained independence, he said: 'The independence of Ghana is meaningless until it is linked with the total liberation of Africa'. Unsurprisingly, he is the only African head of state to have his statute blazon the head quarters of the OAU.

As a Ugandan, I see very little that sets us apart from the people of Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, and a large part of DRC. We all speak Kiswahili, and even our local languages are mutually intelligible. And although, the Bantu languages of Southern and Eastern Africa are a little further apart, there is a level of mutual intelligibility that reaffirms that we are one people, one nation, ultimately.
