I have to admit this was the first, best representation of a gunshot wound I'd seen in any TV show or movie. Every version before this relied on using tattered shirts and indiscriminate fake blood to hide the fact it's bloody hard to mimic the damage a shotgun shell can do to a torso, but the crew in this episode nailed it. Don't forget that Jack has been alive for a lot longer by this point. While we don't know how old he was at the end of season one of Who, we know he's been on Earth for at least a century by now, as evidenced by his presence in 1909 Lahore. Safe to say he's seen and been through some things, particularly working for Torchwood. Put on top of that living with the unknowable nature of his existence for all that time, which is why he is so keen to find The Doctor again, and it's only natural some of the polish has gone off his shine.
There's a big finish audio called "Broken" that takes place between the events of Cyberwoman and Countrycide, which sheds the light on Ianto's mindspace during these events and introduces his relationship with Jack. I highly recommend you give it a listen before moving forward!
FunFact the pub they used in this episode was the same one they used in recent Who episode 73 yards, where Ruby ends up. So that is probably why it looking familiar to you.
So fun fact, the theme for Jack Harkness which was composed by Ben Foster had a rythm which could be sung along with the words of "here he comes in a ruddy great tractor" in your head, all based on the scene near the end of this episode.
One of my favourite Torchwood episodes! I haven’t rewatched the show for years but whenever I’m reminded of it, this episode is always the first thing that comes to mind. The creepiness, blood & gore and just the overall horror has stuck in my mind since I originally started the show back in 2012. That last line from the villager/cannibal to Gwen, “because it made me happy”, still makes my skin crawl.
It's interesting seeing Torchwood again and it's a very different show when viewed in its own right . Of the companion shows to Dr Who the Sarah Jane adventures covered the lighter side and this is very dark .Jack is isolated , being immortal and not knowing why and the team are in a unique situation as his companions unable to tell anyone . I'm enjoying the opportunity for a rewatch and your views on the series .
"listen, torchwood is so serious i find". i had to chuckle to myself "you have no idea". this is such a dark episode.jack was a few hundred years younger when he first met the doctor and hadnt ever died so theres that... also (no spoilers) but owens character arc in this show overall, oh boy...
"Give us Jack in his true form" made me giggle. don't forget, Jack is at work. what's more, he's the boss. I don't know about you, but I don't bring my full self to work. my coworkers don't know whether I'm gay or not. as far as I am concerned, they shouldn't even be curious. so if you expect the exact same Jack you know from DW, you might be a bit disappointed. he is no less crazy, though, so why don't we appreciate him for the new side of his we are seeing? he will do plenty of unhinged things in the future, you will *not* be bored ;)
I forgot, we did see a flashback showing he´s lived for quite some time. Looking forward to the later episodes this season that are less gore and sex and we find out more about Jack
The team isn't necessarily friends with eachother. They just work together with a shared higher objective. With that said, the entire team never has a moment to cope and deal with what just happened. They all report to work the very next day. These bad decisions Gwen makes are a way of coping with everything she is experiencing.
My personal favourite Torchwood episode. Definitely not the best (not that it's bad, but there are better episodes) but my favourite. On my first watch of Torchwood a couple years back, this episode cemented itself in my memory more than any other episode.
My two favorite episodes of Torchwood are Countryside and Adrift - two brilliant stories that would never been able to be brought to screen in Doctor Who. How ironic both are written by Chris Chibnall
I'm glad Chibnall had a couple of wins, even if just for the sake of his mental health. Folks will be holding his DW seasons over his head for years to come, so I hope he holds close thoughts like "People liked me for Broadchurch"
The first half of the season, they were looking for their identity, and I'm happy to say Cyberwoman and Countricide are pretty much it for excessive gore. I'm glad they moved away from that as a core element. You did your best getting through it.
I hope the blood and gore doesn't haunt you, as the character arcs are so worth watching. This is the only one I can't watch at night...the actors are far to good😱😬
This episode scared the daylights out of me and made me wonder if Torchwood was a show for me. I did stick with it but it is a massive contrast to Doctor Who.
If I remember correctly, Owen's character was a major self-saving coward (until his character arc), so he didn't want to risk dying, shaking his head at gwen.
when I first saw this episode (in my 20s), I absolutely loved the Owen/Gwen story. I think I saw myself in Owen - I was brash, horny and explicit and wanted to be seen as a "bad boy" (even though I am a woman). these days, I have the context of all 4 TW seasons and I love Owen for different reasons. my point is that there are people who like this storyline. I still like it, not because of what happens (Gwen being unfaithful to Rhys is a travesty, no doubt) but because of what it shows us about the characters and how they grow as a result of it. you will see. don't avoid a plotline just because it is uncomfortable - with Russell T. there is always a point to it. ^^
I hate gore as well. I never watch horror. This episode shocked me and scared me (like classic who I was hiding behind a cushion on transmission, I imagine, for a lot of it). However, the character development and plots/stories is what I love about Torchwood - I love how flawed and human they are and how different every story is. I love how they have layers and backstories that are slowly unpeeled. And the acting is excellent, the directors and crew do a brilliant job with a budget of peanuts. The team all do bad things and make mistakes. But I love that the humans were the villains here. I personally love Gwen so much and can understand why she does what she does (even though I wouldn't condone cheating in real life). And of course, I adore Captain Jack. Who wouldn't?

One of my fave torchwood episodes, I know a lot of people hate it but as someone who enjoys a psychological thriller or two, this was amazing
Hahaha Ugo is DISGUSTED at the thought of Gwen and Owen 😂
Here right with you, Ugo.
Definitely with you. I do feel for Gwen as she hasn't got anyone to reach out to, and Owen unsurprisingly is taking advantage of a vulnerable woman.

Since finding this out, all I hear are those words whenever the music plays 🤣🤣

Thats literally a spoiler about his age
Great acting too! Filmed in the Bannau Brycheiniog national park. What is truly scary is not what happens but that it is fully human.
I’ve only ever seen this episode once and it’s so creepy. I wasn’t expecting it and it reminds me of Hot Fuzz meets Doctor Who meets 28 Days Later.
"No! We'll make base at the pub!" 😂
At the Winchester?
For the greater good

Owen hating the countryside in this episode is such a mood 😂 this is definitely the best episode of season 1.

This episode always makes me think of The Benders episode from Supernatural

This episode is creepy, scary and bloody.
I LOVE IT!
Is not as deep as other episodes (IYKYK), but it's foreshadow. Everybody can be a monster.
Whew, that was no easier watching it over your shoulder. I think the programme goes on to earn what they put us through, though 👍
One of the peaks of Torchwood.
Yeah this episode’s pretty scarring.. only seen it once about 2 yeas ago and it still creeps me out
i cannot recommend enough the torchwood audios set during this time, but also series/season 5, 6 and 7 once you finish 4!

❤❤❤
After all these years, I still don't understand why Gwen and Owen gave up the stand-off. All she has to do is shoot the cop and they win. 🤦♀️
If I remember correctly, Owen's character was a major self-saving coward (until his character arc), so he didn't want to risk dying, shaking his head at gwen.
