Thank you so much! I collect bottles from old bottle dumps. Because of this, very few have lids. Now I know how to make my own. I'm hoping to create a series of site specific terrariums, using plants found where the bottles are found.
Shawn Rowell that's a great idea! I would like to see your collection of bottles and the site you're collecting from. I've never heard of a bottle dump before.
This one is for all of my fellow container fiends! Yes I spelled that right, I didn't mean friends. I wanted to get this up yesterday, but I would rather push uploads back a day or two in order to release a better end product for you all. Anyways, it's safe to say that we all find great containers without lids. I came across Oogoo some time ago, but back then I didn't think of using it for this purpose. Although I didn't come up with the stuff, I still wanted to share this with you. IMO this is easier than tracking down the perfect lid. Plus it's fun to make! A friendly reminder that the April terrarium contest will begin on Saturday. I will upload an official announcement with further details on the 1st.
I know right? I just lost the cork yo my bottle. I think cats did something with it. I was letting my bottle soak and suddenly it was no where to be found. I think this is a pretty neat idea.
I'm in the same boat, Ive been watching this guys videos for a week so when i found a cool container to use and It needs a strange lid that cannot find, it blew my mind that the video to solve my problem is from the same guy.
This is exactly what I needed to see, I went thrift store shoppping yesterday and dound a few lidless wonders, i was going to order corks, but I love this idea
You know this might be the most valuable video I've ever seen from you even though I've actually gotten a lot of value from your channel. This was like my main problem.
This is awesome! I have a metal seal with a cool pattern on it that's made for wax seals on letters. I'm going to see if the oogoo will hold the pattern if I press it on as it cures.
Hello! A quick question to see if you have thoughts on troubleshooting with an oogoo related question: I made a series of oogoo lids for a number of terrariums I built (some with just silicone, some with silicone and corn starch). We left them to cure for 3-4 days in our garage (since they still had that vinegar type smell). We recently brought them in, thinking that would be enough time for them to cure. They looked and felt solid, so as far as we could tell they seemed cured. We had terrariums already built and added the lids to the terrariums. But, when we woke up the next morning, many of the plants in the terrariums looked pale, discolored, and wilted. The jars also smelt heavily of vinegar, so it makes us think the lids were not cured enough? But from all our google searching, it seems like they should cure in 24 hrs, and we left ours for multiple days before using them. SO our question for you Tanner, did we do something wrong? How long do you leave oogoo lids to cure? Is there something we can do in the future to help the curing process along? Thanks so much!
I suppose eventually it could get dried out, but I think it would take a long time. The silicone gaskets on hinge top jars tend not to dry out for a long time and are frequently used for terrariums. The composition in materials isn't much different, so I would expect the same from these.
Awesome, thanks, finding plastic caps that happen to fit the glass jars I up-cycle/re-purpose is alway frustrating. These would both be pliable/rubbery type caps, correct? Do you know of an additive that would increase hardness?
Is this substance safe to keep refrigerated and/or turn it into a Preserve example: home made jam? I have a bunch of cute little glasses with no lids that i want to turn into preserves, but having trouble finding ways to make a solid lid to keep its contents stay fresh longer.
Have you ever done a waterfall in your terrariums? :) i'm planning to build a terrarium with a water section on the left (something like a small acquarium) and a waterfall at the extreme right of the terrarium that goes like a small river through the terrarium into the mini-pond. I'm learning a lot of stuff from your videos so i definely have to ask you, have you ever tried something like that? Any Idea? :) good job, definetly one of my favorite youtube channels
I have done waterfalls in vivariums, not terrariums. It's very easy to do this wrong and I think everyone does at one point or another. With that said it would take me a really long time to adequately explain effective ways that you could go about doing it. When are you trying to do this?
Well, i'm studying botanic and i'll start natural science university at september so i have a lot of time, my idea is to have the terrarium ready by December. I'd like to recreate into the terrarium a kind of tropical river stream and a small pond; so that i can observe in it plants from different types (water, climbing ecc ecc). After some months of plants growing in it (with springtails, isopods and earthworms) my idea was to insert some very small tropical fish (pangio kuhlii, and maybe some shrimp) in the pond and maybe some kind of dart frog, or small anfibians/reptiles. I have a medium large place to set this up (130x60 h50) so i think it's not impossible, but i have a few doubts on how can i build some parts of it. Anyway thank you for replying and trying to help me :)
Hey @SerpaDesign I found some nice glass bottles on a hunt around dead horse bay a known bottle dump in New York State I was wondering if you can use old glass (after cleaning it) and if you had a P.O box I was thinking of sending you accuple. Thanks
Hello, thank you for the video! At first I thought about how an amazing idea it is, but after I actually tried it, the smell of the silicone is just unbearable and I’m concerned about how hygienic it would be if used to cover jars that contain food or consumable liquids... do you have a solution for those?
Hey man. I have a bit of a worry. I put a couple pieces of wood in my closed jar terrarium. I was proud at how my first one turned out. I did this about 4 days ago. Well. One of the pieces of wood is now growing mold. Like spider Webby white strands. I notice the mold on the wood is slightly connecting to the moss its laying on. ( like a spider web connecting ) I'm not sure what to do because I keep seeing different opinions when I search online, so its a bit confusing. I really like your videos and I can tell you know your stuff. What should I do? Also I could take a pictures and email it to you or send through Facebook or something if you'd like. But I'm just worried that its going to spread on everything. I have one milipede in there, i know they feast on decomposing stuff and mold. But I haven't seen him since I put him in there, now sure if he's playing underground or what. I need to try to find some springtails outside, but I'm not sure how I'm going to go about collecting them and adding them into the jar. Should I maybe go find some isopods to put in there? I just really want my first terrarium to be a success. Also wondering if I should just boil the wood, dry it out in the oven and return it later? I apologize for this being such a long comment. Thank you very much for by our videos man
It's all good. Before I address your question I want to say this. Don't be afraid to have failures, sometimes failing is the best way to learn. Experimentation and adaptation in problem solving helped me get to where I am today. Anyway, this is the #1 closed terrarium problem. I am working to address it formally, but it's a more involved production than originally anticipated. Understanding micro fauna and the mold will help tremendously. Springtails can't be substituted - isopods will not take care of mold. To capture springtails, look for a log in a very moist area. Take said log or some wet dirt from under it. Most likely you will have yourself a nice batch of springtails afterward. Springtails are the best medicine when it comes to dealing with mold. However, you can do some things on your own. Mold happens from the high levels of moisture present within a terrarium. So even if you did sanitize the wood, the problem will still happen. Until you can get springtails, try getting some tweezers and gently remove the mold (it should come off in a sheet). This is often sufficient enough to stop it. For people who don't want springtails, I always tell them to give the terrarium some fresh air. Letting the area with mold dry out will aid in remediation. A combination of these should quickly cure your problem. It's a very layered and hard to address issue in a comment. Hopefully this can help and good luck!
Thanks a lot man, I really appreciate it. I'm headed into the woods in just a few to try and capture me some spring tales. Your channel has become one of my top favorites. Keep it up. Thanks again :-) -Donnie
What exactly is OOGOO, what is Silicone GE? I do understand all the other contained materials, but when asking for silicone GE for making oogoo, the shop sellers in hardware stores and aquaristic stores looked at me in a rather awkward way. I am from Germany, so it wouldbe helpful to know what silicone GE is originally made for or which special properties it has.
I'm just learning myself, so I could be wrong, but until someone more knowledgeable replies I thought I might help. The difference in the GE silicone that he uses is the fact that GE 2 silicone is safe for potable water containers, and thus safe for aquariums. I think it has something to do with not only its chemical makeup but also the way it cures. That said, I don't think theres much difference in the GE silicone he uses for Oogoo and normal 100% silicone used for construction caulk etc. The only difference I'm aware of is whether they are potable water safe, and from what I understand, if they are, they wouldn't be suitable for this application. Hope this isn't completely wrong info, if so, I apologize.
I agree. In this application it isn't really touching anything you would ingest, so its safe, but he mentioned the GE2 silicone doesn't work for OoGoo and its the kind used in aquariums because its potable water safe.
I agree that is a pretty cool idea! I have found a lot back in the woods while harvesting plants. Maybe I will give this a try as well.

Just got on Instagram this morning! I will give sneak peaks of projects and share various things on there. @serpadesign
SerpaDesign is thus safe for food?
ok, it's terrifying how this was posted today, just when I needed it...
I know right? I just lost the cork yo my bottle. I think cats did something with it. I was letting my bottle soak and suddenly it was no where to be found. I think this is a pretty neat idea.

You should do monthly updates on all your animals, i love seeing the 20 min videos of a tour of all your pets!
Got a new one coming pretty soon!
You know this might be the most valuable video I've ever seen from you even though I've actually gotten a lot of value from your channel. This was like my main problem.
This is the best tutorial I have come across … it’s so nice and creative ..
Thanks for sharing 🎉
Yes! This is the exact type of video i've been wanting! Thank you serpa!
Now this... This does put a smile on my face
So cool thank you! I have old jars and have been going nuts trying to find lids. I have a plastic shot glass for one. Now I can make them.
Very informative and interesting video! I'll definitely try using oogoo for kids at some point.
This is awesome! I have a metal seal with a cool pattern on it that's made for wax seals on letters. I'm going to see if the oogoo will hold the pattern if I press it on as it cures.
Luneowl i was thinking similar things as well! then paint brush it for accent
If anyone wants to do more research into this "Oogoo" it also goes by the name of "Proto Putty".
indeed...
Thanks
that red cork looks like candy 😂👌 beautiful
Great idea! Thanks for a great tutorial.
Thanks for sharing, totally doing this for some of my lidless jars!

I wonder if these lids will survive the heat from direct sunlight, and what effect the sun's UV rays will have. Will they survive the test of time?

this is a very helpful video! I have some drinking glass water bottles that I need to make lids for. Will this be safe for drinking caps? thanks!

Great vid as always
Hi Serpa! Love all your videos! I was wondering if you could make a 10 Gallon Horizontal Vivarium build in the future! Thanks!
I'm down for making another horizontal, but does is have to be a 10 gallon?
Thank you ,well done, can it be used for holding in jars, vinagar ,sodium chlorite,ClO2(chlorine dioxide)? Very cool, thanks.
Thanks much SerpaDesign!
great video! thanks for the tip
Nice video. Ever thought of trying poly beads? It's reusable, less messy, but not sure if it's toxic. Happy jar fiending 😊
Good tips!
This is an awesome video.
There's no shame in being a hoarder. These are the skills of frugal people who will survive when others are confused and don't know what to do.
Loved that video!!
This is so helpful. Thank you.

Think this will for for the lid of a very large square container? Have any suggestions for something very large?
Sure it would and how large is "very large" ?
I would say it is about a 10inx10in opening? I've been hoping to turn it into a native terrarium come summer but I have no air-tight lid!
Hello, thank you for the video!
At first I thought about how an amazing idea it is, but after I actually tried it, the smell of the silicone is just unbearable and I’m concerned about how hygienic it would be if used to cover jars that contain food or consumable liquids...
do you have a solution for those?
Silicone is probably safer than aluminium, silicone is non toxic till its heated over 300+ degrees Celsius
When performing the water leak test I noticed you had your hand or fingers over the top of the cap. Why did you do that?
Can the corn starch be substituted with potato starch?
If you wanted to do this with food grade silicon could you use this for storing food in cans/jars with no lids?
I suppose, but at that point you might as well just buy a new container. I don't think it would be a cost effective solution.
Is this safe enough for dry food products?
very nice

Is oogoo food safe
pls do a isopod culture tutorial
I will for sure.
SerpaDesign thx
Can it withstand high temperature up to 200° C?

Is it ok to send pictures of my terrarium and asking you for advice on your email? Or just get your opinion on the looks
Yeah that's fine.
does anyone know how well these hold up long term?
now we need one that will allow light in through to top that isn't just Saran wrap
Easier said than done. I will figure something out.
Super useful, thank you. I love all your videos, keep up the great work. Sub'd
Can I get these materials at michaels ?
Where can I find a list of ingredients
The only problem is, the silicon is not for food use.
are they food grade ?
Is it weird that I find the mix to look tasty?
Lol no way! I think it looks like it would taste good as well.
why you fill only a litle water ( not full)
I am obtaining two tropical geckos any recommendations of tropical plants
Oh wait..., you made a video making a gecko terrarium
Most required ones
I don't think that's food grade. I wouldn't use it for food jars.

Cool
Bro.... How poisonous is this stuff?
Can this work with flour instead of corn starch
I don't know. I think it might, but the results probably wouldn't be as good.
SerpaDesign hey I have some tanks that I have put together when I post them will u look at them and tell me what u think
67TH!
watching this high is really funny.
First because spam
Can the corn starch be substituted with potato starch?
