Current Checkpoint, so it knows where in the track you are, Next Checkpoint, so it knows where you're supposed to go, and the Precious Checkpoint, so that it knows if you're driving the wrong way By triggering Checkpoint 1 then skipping Checkpoint 0 on your way back, the game thinks you're still driving forwards in the track. When you hit Checkpoint 6 it never saw you driving backwards and checkpoints 2-5 aren't loaded so it assumes you properly went from 1 - 6 and updates your position. So now when you go from 6 to 0 the game thinks you did the entire lap since it never saw you go backwards
