Separate Ways (Instructional keyboard tutorial)

  • This is my keyboard cover of Journey's "Separate Ways". Some people play the synth riff with two hands, but I've made it a point to be able to play it with one hand, so that I can fatten up the bass with my left hand. This is a fun song to play, but it can be a bit nerve-wracking during the solo keyboard parts, since there is NO room for error.

    Oh my God!!! Amazing. Man you are one heck of a musician! Incredible talent! I've been rocking along with you for the last week and a half or so - on this one, and on your Dreams rendition. I grabbed my Strat, and hit it, when I stumbled across the Dreams vid. And had to do the same tonight on this. o much fun. You are a gifted musician, Brother! I'm having a blast playing along!!

      How do you get it to sound exactly like the actual song? I can’t seem to get it to work on my keyboard

    • @goatghost
      @goatghost  Месяц назад

      @@TheDarkOne_Rumplestiltskin If your keyboard is a fully-editable synthesizer, you should be able to get the sound close. If it is a "consumer-grade" keyboard (i.e. usually one with speakers), it may be more difficult. Basically, the sound is based on two sawtooth waves which have been slightly detuned against one another. That is what give it a "full" sound. The attack will be crisp, while the release will let the sound "ring out".

    • @TheDarkOne_Rumplestiltskin
      @TheDarkOne_Rumplestiltskin Месяц назад +1

      @@goatghost oh. My keyboard doesn’t have that. It has something similar, though. It has synth strings

    • @goatghost
      @goatghost  Месяц назад

      @@TheDarkOne_Rumplestiltskin A “synth strings” patch would probably be the closest. You would need to shorten the “attack time” and, possibly, adjust the “release time”.

    I have the keyboards you have, how did you program the drums? I have a hard time creating rhythm patterns on the X6, much less using a lot of different patterns in a sequence to create a song. To be honest, I usually just use one or two default patterns. If you went through all that effort for one cover song, power to you! Just wondering, thanks!

    • @goatghost
      @goatghost  7 лет назад +13

      Hey there...actually, I did a search for "Separate Ways MIDI file" and downloaded one from a free MIDI file website (not sure which site, but most sites usually all pass around the same free version available for download). Keep in mind that some versions that people create are of higher quality (fills, dynamics, precision, etc.) than others. So, you might need to download and listen to several of them, before you find one you can use.
      Anyway, once downloaded, you can use a computer-based sequencer (if you don't own one, there are a few free ones out there) to strip out all the tracks, except the drum track (which is usually on channel 10). After you strip it, you would save as a standard MIDI file (.mid) on a compact flash card in the proper directory (I think it's the "SEQ" directory, if I'm not mistaken) and pop that in your Fantom. I added 8 stick clicks at the beginning for a count-off.
      I have created my own drum sequences, when I couldn't find a song I wanted (or, when the quality of the one that is generally available is poor). But, it's a lot easier just to use someone else's (if it's free). If I'm desperate (or I just don't want to spend 6+ hours programming an accurate drum part), I'll even buy a MIDI file.

    This video gets everything right about the song
    The notes
    The beat with the drum
    Everything flows together well and most other videos of either just performances of people playing it or piano tutorials either use a regular piano/default piano setting or they are a mess of lines that is so incomprehensible that you get lost not even 5 seconds in

    Quick question, the sound/patch/program you are using, Is it from the JV-90 or from the Fantom-X6? It sounds great!!
    Is it a just single patch/program or a performance? What patch is it?

    • @goatghost
      @goatghost  8 лет назад +1

      Thanks, Maximo! I am on holiday, right now, but I will try to get you that information when I get home. The sound is being produced only by the Fantom. I am not sure if I tweaked an existing patch or created my own. Basically, it is a patch consisting of two sawtooth waves which have been detuned slightly (+2 cents on one and -2 cents on the other). It is possible that chorus is added, as well. Reverb is definitely added. The patch has a medium-long release...just long enough for the notes to lead into one another, but not long enough to make is sound muddy. Interestingly, the patch that I am using does not sound exactly like the patch that Jonathan Cain uses on the original version. I believe the original patch has sort of a brassy "wah" sound to it.

      Thank you very much! Unfortunately, that patch that I'm using is a modified patch which requires the Roland SRX-07 Ultimate Keys Expansion Board (~$240-$300 on eBay). But, you ***CAN*** get a close approximation by creating a basic patch which uses two tones. Just use the wave INT A 557 "P5 Saw HD" for each tone, detune one of them by +6 cents and the other by -6 cents, add some chorus using the built-in chorus effect, and set the release time (within "TVA ENV") for each wave to something like "60". It should sound pretty passable...very close, actually. :-)

      Hey Donald...it appears that the Roland VR-09 has the ability to play Standard MIDI FIles (SMF format). So, you can search for and download a "Separate Ways" SMF (Type 1, which has the tracks separated) off the Internet, strip down everything by the drums on a computer, and transfer it to your VR-09, via a USB stick. That's what I did (i.e. I did not program the drums). 🙂

      Hey there, Galaxian03 Chuck...unfortunately, in order to get the EXACT sound, with the waveform(s) that I used, you will need the Roland SRX-07 Ultimate Keys expansion card. They go for as low as $220 on eB@y and it is DEFINITELY worth the price, especially if you want sounds for classic rock, 80s rock, 70s rock, new wave, pop, etc. As for getting the EXACT sound...please check out my "Subdivisions" video. You can find it within the "Tom's Covers/Instructional Videos" section of my RUclips channel (the channel you are viewing).
