So in this video I take a dive into why the DC animated movies have become a hell of a lot less compelling, from the story to characters, these movies have been very bland of late (with exceptions) thus my intrigue to find out why and what makes a good DC animated movie.
SIDE NOTE: I find it interesting that people say DC animated movies are better than Marvels when the very man that directed marvels left and started directing DC's current animated movies.. in a way sort of explains the drop in quality these last few years..

SUPER FRAME DC really should really give The Creeper(Jack Ryder )or Plastic man they're own animated movies. Fans need to know who these characters are and that Harley Quinn isn't the only Goofball character in DC.Also make Injustice a animated series or Arkhame Knight Animated series.

Also, like you said personal conflicts and the tone of the movies make such a huge difference. That's why I truly believe that Under The Red Hood and The Flashpoint Paradox were terrific in this respect. While they've got generous with the violence factor, that doesn't necessarily make it a better movie.

The art style, dialogue, and voice direction took a nosedive too. The style doesn’t ever compliment or enhance the stories they’re telling. Idk how to describe the dialogue impartially, it’s just passionless and overindulgent. Most of the characters are 2-dimensional one-liner spewers. There’s also a lot of these awkwardly long pauses when characters speak to each other that I never noticed in the older DC animated movies, am I crazy?

Mine is Batman: Under the Red Hood. First of all Jason Todd is my favorite comic book character right now. The way he handled everything in the movie was great. The one criticism I had and it was nightwings part. He was there more of to be there. If they wanted a superhero they should’ve used Tim Drake. He was the one who kept Batman under control and would’ve added a bit more spark to Jason’s rage. However I love the end monologue that Jason gives.

My favorites is The Dark Knight Returns. It is a great examination of Batman's character and why the world needs him. In spite of the world turning darker around him he sticks to his moral code. It is a great examination of Superman as well. He is conflicted between following the law and doing what he believes is right when he is sent to stop Batman.

the ending talking about how we should try to be constructive got me to sub. i personally also love under the red hood but ya it gets kinda hard to watch if im not in the mood. i did notice a huge dip in production and quality around the time of justice league war. i had fallen off a bit bc the friends i used to watch them with stopped having interest. i just think the older ones really tried to communicate good ideas and they had me craving more and more but they could only produce so many then. now they make like 3 a year and i cant be bothered unless its a random day. i kept thinking it was bc i was getting older and these types of stories and shows arent for me anymore. and i think for the most part the simpler ones arent. but it reminds me of how much i cared about crisis on 2 earths. and how thought provoking it was. thanks for that

Glad to see some agreement that the film's have taken a downgrade in quality. I see them praised so often that I actually wondered if it was just me. Genuinely, I actually wondered if I was alone in disliking or simply acknowledging the problems with these more recent movies. Since their exposure on Netflix (JL War onward). Judas Contract has been the first of those continuity that I ACTUALLY enjoyed. I was okay with Dark but it still felt underwhelming. So I hope this is a sign of better things to come. My personal favorite is JL Doom, would've liked it better had Newbern been Superman but eh. The movie that pretty much got me into comics was Under The Red Hood, right when it came out. It compelled me to go Wiki diving into the Batman comic lore, and I discovered more about Tim Drake as Red Robin through that and fell in love with that character (you'd think Jason, but Tim was the Robin I related to the most), and then I read more and more.

In the Animated universe, it’s The Judas Contract, but OVERALL, it’s Mask of the Phantasm. It is just as complex (if not more) than the apparently “superior” Nolan films while still keeping the classic gothic feel of Batman that those films were severely lacking. My favorite part is when Bruce is at his parent’s grave sand he’s begging for forgiveness for being happy. Plus it has Joker’s origins being a hitman for the mob, which I prefer over the killing joke origin, but that’s just me

Crisis on Two Earths is my favorite, so far. Although I also love Red Hood, Public Enemies, The Elite, All-Star Superman, and Return of Black Adam.
As a fanboy, having all those heroes and villains in one movie was awesome, seeing what an evil Justice League and a good Injustice Gang would be, the supporting "Made Men" specially the Supers, the duels between parallel heroes and villains, and the surprise arrival of heroes in the Watchtower battle.
As a writer, I was hooked on each character's arc, and that's not just for the heroes. Batman not wanting to cross over to a parallel Earth because they have "enough on their plate" as it is (an idea he admitted to being wrong, and that's a first for Bats), Owlman and Superwoman's dangerous relationship, the Crime Syndicate's systemic operations, Martian's love story, even the subtle setup for Batman's final trick using Johnny Quick to power the dimensional jump. And of course, Owlman's insane genocide plot. Having James Woods voice Owlman was a great choice, IMO.
    Great video. Thank you!

My big pet peeve for most of the recent dc animated series/ movies stems from what I can only conclude to be a difference in voice direction: focusing on the flow of speech patterns and conversations.
    Andrea Romano vs. Wes Gleason.
(It could also be the writer's fault, I suppose, based on the cues)
Has anyone ever noticed how the speech patterns changed with the introduction of young justice and has found itself into the new 52 as well?
The most aggravating trend of all, the pause, midsentence, to deliver some humorous prose or play on words?
Like the audience, us, are too stupid to pick up what the script meant to imply.
That's really my only complaint... and nearly everything having to do with Ninja Batman, minus the Joker's deception.

Well Super Frame, I just got done watching Wonder Woman Bloodlines and let me tell ya, it had all three elements you just named that is lacking in the current DCAU movies; personal conflict, subtext, themes, and direction. Like u mentioned Sam Liu is a great director but it that Jay Oliva that naggs at me. He is a one dimensional director. Why on Earth would you get a storyboard artist for the directors chair?
I won't spoil WW Bloodlines but to be honest in my opinion I would say objectively that it is far better than any DCAU movie within the past 7 years; the closest being Death of Superman. It is gripping, emotional, has deep themes in love, compassion, truth, embracing who u are, and standing up for your personal beliefs. Im telling u it's great and I expect Superman Red Son to be good too.

Kori while in her berserker state is strong enough to need both Donna and Mon-El (a literal Amazon and Kryptonian) to hold her back and they really struggled and nearly failed to do so. But in the movies, we barely see any power at all. Not to mention her starbolts are beyond weak which is completely wrong. Everyone died, but Damien gets revived by the power of love, making his sacrifice void, all because he is the favorite. A lot of it just didn’t make sense or seemed lazy.

My two favorites are the new frontier and under the red hood. The new frontier is because of the characters. I love how they portray Superman and Wonder Woman having different views on justice, I love Hal Jordan’s journey and consider him to be one of the better versions of Hal Jordan and Martian manhunter is just such a compelling character in this movie. Also the action is fun and the story kept my interest. While with under the red hood, the best thing in it is that the story is fantastic with great ideologies, great emotion, Great voice acting, great action, and the one of the best monologues in any superhero movie. The monologue is obviously the one at the end when batman explains to Jason why he hasn’t killed joker.

I also love return of the black Adam because I have always loved Shazam and it is just a well written short that’s fun and also George newborn is still great as Superman. Also, if we are counting the dcau films, mask of the phantasm is one of the best batman movies ever made with a great arc for Bruce Wayne, fantastic animation, action and voice acting, and a great mystery that isn’t rushed and makes sense unlike bad blood or hush. I also surprisingly like Superman brainiac attacks even though most people don’t and I do agree that it’s weird they used the dcau style when it’s not canon to the dcau but it’s still a fun movie and Clark’s arc is well done in my opinion. Also, I do like lex in the film even though he has nothing on gene hackman or Clancy brown.

I guess I would speak from an outsider perspective on this cos I'm not much of a comic book fan but I was slightly intrigued by Damian Wayne as a character so I watched a bunch of animated movies with him. What an utter waste of time it was. It seemed like the makers decided that the how and why a character might change his mind and grow are not worth showing at all as long as the character does change at some point.
Did it ever feel lazy. Those few movies I watched went nowhere really fast accomplishing nothing along the way. Why would I watch anymore of this ? It's so lame. The way they are now is certainly going to make it harder to promote them to a wider audience than blind fanboys.

Sometimes it's okay, but I still think that most of the art and animation since Young Justice has been downright horrible. It's just SO stiff and lifeless... even the dialogue is, really. Yes, I'm spoiled by the Timm & Dini stuff from before. Yes, Red Hood was actually pretty great. No, I haven't seen half of your top 10 list, mostly because I pretty much gave up on these movies years ago. But what I have seen has been literally painful to watch. The worst offenders rank among the worst animation I've seen in decades, and the art style looks like Aeon Flux, which is to say, disgusting.
That's before I even get to the writing, directing, and corner-cutting that you discuss here. Still, while I'm harsher than you are, I can see your points. I'll have to check out your top 10 and watch the ones I missed.

While the quality has dropped for the new slate of dc animation, I’ve stuck with them this long that I’ve seen the good they can still do every now and then.
My favorite of these modern movies is TT vs JL. It delivers a character arc for Damian coming to terms with being part of a team and learns to overcome his demons to become a better person. It’s characterization of the teen titans (especially with their take on raven, my fav) and their adaptation of the trigon arc felt like a real titans story I haven’t seen in a while when it came out.
And it’s the most fun, especially compared to the miserable 3 batman movies and the 2 JL movies.
It doesn’t tell the most thought provoking story, but it’s an enjoyable one that feels like classic teen titans.
It means a lot to me, as a titans fan, and made me rekindle my love for dc animation at the time.
It’s obviously not perfect, the only flaw (for me) was with the JL characters continuing to be the most flat, dull and wooden version of the team ever conceived.
I always want to look on the bright side of things, I may like some of the new stuff but even I think they should’ve ended this shared animated universe a while ago. (And it’s ending with apokolips war supposedly) I can only hope that someday they’ll get their footing back, and make films that can be loved and talked about for a long time again.

The problem has less to do with the writers or directors and way more to do with WB. WB is simply unwilling to increase the budget. They've actually decreased the budget over the years. That's why they stopped doing the short films. WB decided that the short films weren't increasing sales enough to justify the additional cost.
These movies are now being made on more of a schedule. WB has decided to make 3 movies per year. If you look at the interviews with the writers from years ago, they were making movies based on ideas they were excited about. Nowadays, they're making movies to keep up a quota. So rather than taking the time to actually work out the best stories, they're just working to finish the stories on time. Sometimes that works but more often, they end up with a final script that's more like a first or second draft.
The actual creatives have less power than they used to. When they were doing the DC animated shows, they had a lot of creative freedom. They could come up with their stories and ideas, they needed approval from DC and WB but the higher ups didn't tell them what stories they had to do. Now they're being told what stories to do. That's why they did the movies based on the New 52.
Also, WB screwed over Lauren Montgomery. After Wonder Woman didn't sell as well as WB wanted, they shelved the Wonder Woman sequel and Batgirl: Year One, which Lauren wanted to make. They also changed Superman/Batman: Apocalypse to focus less on Supergirl, which did not make Lauren and Andrea Romano happy.

+KingofMadCows-I had a suspicion as such, that these New 52 movies in particular are more done by committee pumping out these titles like a factory. (Even Justice League vs Fatal Five had an awful budget where while it looks better, it still looks like a sloppier, less refined version of the Justice League tv show). The writing is a massive problem and with the New 52 movies, have gotten far worse in time. Son of Batman and Batman vs Robin had a lot of potential but were hindered by so many problems and by Bad Blood, the series had already plunged off a cliff. Of no return. With Bad Blood, there was no saving the series anymore. . .
And The Killing Joke was really what should have been the final death knell for all these animated movies. What an absolute disgrace and travesty. Most of these movies are no better than direct to video releases. But WB pumps them out one after the other because they desperately want to weasel and sucker people. I don't know who genuinely looks forward to any of these movies anymore. Only one of my friends said he may, MAY decide to catch Superman: Red Son. . .only because it's unconnected to the New 52 series and they liked the original comic so much. But at this point, I'm just done with all these animated movies and wish they would disappear completely. . .

I completely agree, these movies have gone downhill and need to be great again! For me the decline started after the Flashpoint Paradox. I thought that was the last great one. I miss being able to tell people that the animated movies are so much better, but now I just have to say the earlier ones, and by earlier I mean JL Doom, Wonder Woman, Under the Red Hood etc., which aren't even that old, making it harder to explain. Vaughn Coleman , honestly I'm fine with the whole idea of the shared universe idea, however what makes the current dc animated movies lack luster is 2 major components, one no attempt at actual atmosphere or to simplify it let's call it personality, my favorite dc animated movies are The Dark Knight Returns parts 1 and 2, and Batman Assault On Arkham, the first for recreating the 80's aesthetic and the second for it's pace and voice work, the second component is the voice direction and directors, Andrea Romano did such an amazing job making the characters come to life, Wes Gleason?, god he's trying but his results are just too mediocre

    • @feraflauna3238
      @feraflauna3238 5 лет назад

+Vaughn Coleman-It's easier to see with this: after Flashpoint Paradox, and probably after Man of Steel where they aimed to compete with Marvel, WB/DC decided to pump out their own cinematic universe factory, with Justice League for the movies, and New 52 for the majority of the animated movies. With the animated movies, they did the whole process by committee where they severally slashed the budget where the animation/style is often sloppy (even Fatal Five, which does look a little better, still has a lot of design problems and looks cheap. . .), rid themselves of their far more competent writers and filmmakers. They even dropped Andrea Romano, a supreme prime voice director, after Batman vs Robin for no reason, where the voice direction even took a sharp decline afterwards without her.
And they appointed far less talented and capable writers and filmmakers that would just do what they're told and punch the movies out on time. That's about it. Where Under The Red Hood was a beautiful story made with love and care, the New 52 movies and a lot of the recent others are just pumped out. Like a factory packaging raw sausage and don't even care how bad the sausages tastes.
So many people want a DCAU Justice League continuation so bad. And right now, I can beyond not recommend doing so. Because WB/DC has such a tight, iron deathgrip on anything and everything to where they're still trying to sort out the nuclear mess they unleashed from the live action shared series.
I don't know right now what their approach is going to be for the animated movies. It would be merciful if New 52 was finally dropped and forgotten about. So far, it looks like they're going to do absolutely nothing different. This animated factory needs to stop. . .Soon. . .

Not to mention in almost every part of his OWN MOVIE, he kept on being the damsel in distress eventhough he's the protagonist and needs to be saved by everybody else. the movie felt forced. I can't help but to keep on comparing aquaman from the JLA to the new aquaman from throne of atlantis ranging from the character itself to it's conflict and the plot as a whole. Basically, in old dc animations every characters carry it's weight and importances. All of them matters no matter how short their screentime is. However they have screwed up by giving Batman characters the spotlight, or rushing events that need proper build up to pull off. The judas contract was okay, but not a good adaptation of the story. The less I speak of B/HQ, better. What the movies need is to focus on each individual hero before doing big events. All batman films fail to do that since there's still focuses on how big the threat is rather than the personal conflict. This is something under the hood did brilliantly, and should be done with a Batman story.

I want a dark Knight metal animated movie or a Teen Titans the animated series movie made with these new 52 movie graphics, any objections?

Yes, that is really stupid. Dark Knight Metal needed multiple tie in's and many issues to get the story across and you think it'll take just one movie? *Hell No* and with that god awful new 52 animation? Please tell me your comment was a joke because if you think that this animation is superior to Justice League Doom or even Crisis on Two Earths or kidding yourself. The animation is clunky, the fight choreography is terrible (except a part in Doom when the Team teams up on Darkseid), and the voice actors don't hold a candle to the ones in the animated cartoons.

They’re making Teen Titans Vs. Teen Titans Go

@@justsomeponywithamustache8731 I know. They been teasing it 🙄. However The OG Teen Titans are going to have their original animation *NOT* new 52. And I'm saying this now it's going to be bad.

That would be cool. Hopefully they can make an animation style that mimics Greg capullo art.

my favorites has to batman under the red hood batman mask of the phantasm batman beyond return of the joker mostly because well its my all time favorite character fighting batman true Nemesis but also has a great mystery on how the hell the joker is alive in the future and the reveal to who the joker is. was really dark and really interesting in my opinion. Justice league crisis on two earths is a great movie because well its about the crime syndicate and the justice league going against each other yes but also has owlman a member of the syndicate manipulating everything behind the scenes to achieve his own agenda which is really interesting in my opinion. Justice league dark a great team origin movie that adapts the source material pretty good opinion. finally recently it has to be Justice league gods and monsters which was a original idea from bruce timm that actually paid off and gave us a great elseworld story for the DC universe that i really want to see more from that universe because it was really good and interesting.

Honestly, one of my favorites is the Batman vs. Dracula movie, because not only does it ask what kind person Bruce Wayne is when facing an original Dark Prince, but also show that although Batman is about the Mission, he will move heaven and Earth to save people that he cares about

I love the dc animated movies and I think you are right these films used to have potential, a great story, great characters, and badass animation. But nowadays these films are kinda sloppy some are really great but some not so much. I think your way explains how to fix these movies.

Also my favorite dc animated movie is batman vs robin because we get to know Damian Wayne a little more than we saw him in son of batman and he is wanting to go out in the open world and not hide behind the mask as robin. This is what makes this my favorite dc animated movie

For me it is justice league flashpoint paradox. The movie got me into a flash fan and at first I didn't like the flash that much. I like Thomas Wayne batman and it make aquaman a killer. I can go on and on about this movie.
