Last year I was sitting in bed and I dropped my phone on the floor so I just reached down to pick it up and right next to it was a big Funnel Web that was rearing up...needless to say I had to change my PJ bottoms after that!

Well I conquered my severe arachnophobia to watch this and got to say I really love the personality of the trapdoor spiders, and glad to know a few things if I'm ever bitten by a funnel web, I've already been bitten five different times in my life by Huntsmen and Whitetails

Funnel Webs are no joke, where I live they aren't considered common yet I've had two in my yard/house (that I know of). One in the back yard that was moved on, another came into the house after a massive storm trying to seek shelter - male as well, aggressive AF (wasn't going to risk someone being bit). No way I was going to try and catch that thing and put it back outside, seemed almost immune to pest spray (took forever to go down).

    • @danthewatcher9681

hopefully they grow in numbers enough so that humans can let nature weed out the ones that have specific sicknesses that could decimate them.
I know what I said sounded cruel but that's just how nature works. Devils are predominantly necrophage, so them being resistant to all kinds of diseases is a must, currently they aren't. Once the population can sustain it's elf even through natural selection, then it will be stable.

It’s so neat to see appreciation for wolf spiders! I find them here in Texas pretty often, and always get pictures. Confident is definitely a good descriptor; I’ve had them climb onto my shoes and legs multiple times, and that’s usually how I find them. It’s always a treat to see the big mamas, too, I just love seeing all the spiderlings.
There was also one that I found at my old school. It was so big and still that I picked up thinking it was a stray Halloween decoration someone left on the ground. I will admit I was internally startled when it climbed to the back of my hand, but luckily for it I didn’t jump or throw it on reflex. Thankfully it didn’t bite despite being picked up, so I just carried it outside and released it near some dead leaves in the grass. It’s probably one of the few good memories I have from that school; it was mostly full of kids from rich families who lived in the city or suburbs and couldn’t handle spiders bigger than a penny. It almost felt like I gained a modicum of respect from calmly handling a spider with a leg span the length of the back of my hand without a cup and paper!
I just think spiders are neat, I wish they got more appreciation. A lot of their bad reputation is underserved. They’re like the pitbulls of the arthropod world.

We have wolf spiders in New England US as well. Remember coming across my first one cleaning a campground. Quick way to scare a kid is have them open the bathroom door and it being right in your face.

I really want to know why funnel web spider venom is so effective on primates when there aren't any native primates in Australia

My sister is actually allergic to spider venom. We found out when she was bitten on her arm by a male black widow in elementary school and the skin where she was bitten bubbled up like a big blister. She still has the scars on her arm. There's a chance I'm also allergic, but I'd rather not get bitten to find out.

Why are the spiders in small plastic containers? Know they aren't airtight, still, seems such a small space to keep them in... Not doubting for a minute Tom and his crew know what their doing professionally, just wondering is all...
Lucky is adoreable ❤️... would give ALL Tasmanian devils wide berth mind you, no matter how small, doesn't appear the cuddliest kind of animal. 😳
To be fair, any animal taken from the wild (or sanctuary) would be feisty...

Funnel-webs don't really move around much anyway, and live in confined burrows in the wild. Large, open spaces can stress them out.

It’s a Lactrodectus, it’s also venomous. All the Theridiidae Lactrodectus species / widow spiders are highly venomous . On every continent.
