The exhaust from the coal plant is actually water vapor that is cleaner than the water that goes into the plant. The Eagles are thriving in the area, and the habitat has been continuously inhabited by Eagles for at least 20 years. You can even sign on and look at the webcam when the chicks are hatching. In the winter they quite like the warmth I think! I'm not so surprised that British people don't know a lot of detail about America, but I'm always flabbergasted about how many *fellow Americans know so little* but think they know so much.

Actually, I was writing tongue in cheek, but York (i.e. Toronto) angered the British authorities enough that the Royal Army made its side trip to burn Washington on its way to the real strategic point, capture of a a major American port (Bal'mer) as a base of operations nearer the U.S.'s center. Not bad, for Brits...good job. Just to clarify, the rose has been our national flower since 1985. The largest city by population is indeed New York City, but it is not the largest by land area. That would be Sitka, Alaska with a land area of 2,870.3 square miles. NYC is only 304.6 square miles. "The Star-Spangled Banner" is our national anthem. However, there are 2 other songs that we all learn as children in school: "America the Beautiful" and "America" also known as "My Country 'Tis of Thee". The belief that it's a drinking song may be due to the fact that Anacreon was a Greek lyric poet who often wrote drinking songs. But that does not mean "To Anacreon in Heaven" was composed with lagers overflowing and raucous patrons hammering the bar for more beer. It was a club song to be sung by a club soloist.
Not to be nerdy here but I think Leah means the first flag (Betsy Ross) flag had a circle of 13 stars to represent the original 13 colonial states. First used well after the revolutionary war. So she is correct.
All sorts of flags were used during the Revolutionary War. There was no standard flag until later in the war. The most popular flag early on had the union jack in the canton with the 13 stripes, known as the Grand Union Flag. As for stars in the American flag, there's been a lot of different versions. The first official flag in 1977 was described as having 13 stripes and 13 stars, but there was no official arrangement for those 13 stars and so some were just in rows, some were in the shape of a circle, and so on. In 1795, we added two new states to the union, and went to a flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes. In fact, our national anthem is written about the 15 star and 15 stripe flag over Fort McHenry in the War of 1812. It wasn't until 1818 that we really began the tradition of adding new stars for each state, and keeping the number of stripes to 13 for the original 13 colonies. The current flag has been around for almost 58 years, the longest of any American flag. By law, the American flag only can be changed now on the July 4th that follows a new state's acceptance to the union, so if Puerto Rico were to become a state tomorrow, we wouldn't change the flag for a couple more months, and if they became a state on July 5th of this year, we'd go almost a full year before updating the flag.

Since your questions were already answered, here is a little side fact if u didn't know. The capital, Washington, D.C. is not part of any U.S. state. It is it's own district/territory. All three branches of the federal government of the United States are centered in the District-Congress(legislative), President (executive), and Supreme Court (judicial). The citizens of Washington, D.C. also pay one of the highest taxes in the country.
Judy Reyes yes. This is how we would say it. Also, there are soooo many places in the USA with the name Washington. There are even counties and smaller municipalities that are named Washington. For example, I live in an area called Washington, PA, which is 30 mins South of Pittsburgh. The county I live in is called Washington County as well. But,the city I live in is called Washington & had a completely different zip code than any other Washington in the country. But, when I tell people where I'm from, I say Pittsburgh area. Cuz when I say Washington, they think I am from D.C. Haha I know. It gets sooo complicated.

I didn't know the US in general had a flower, but every state has a flower! I've just returned from a trip to google, where I found you were right--the national flower is the rose. Also, Denali is in Alaska, between Anchorage and Fairbanks, and has a national park surrounding it. Many times, it's been called the Serengeti of the North because of all the animals there.
Don't diss my home state of Wyoming! It is called the Equality State because it was the first state to grant women the right to vote! It has beautiful mountains, wonderful prairie, Yellowstone National Park, and just the right amount of people per square mile (meaning not many). Also, did you know that the tune to the Star Spangled Banner (our national anthem) is a British drinking song called "To Anacreon in Heaven"? I was also rather surprised in your last quiz video that I just watched how much you don't know about the US. I had British history in school since I was 11 and from that time on also studied a lot of British and European history on my own (my favorite being the medieval time period). It’s not now called Denali, it’s always been Denali Mt. When you ask what is the biggest city, that is sometimes a trick question. This means that cities you would never count as large cities by population can have huge land boundaries. Orlando Florida and Tucson arizona are such cities.

Question: what do people in the UK call the community they live in? County? I assume there aren't "States" in the UK. I know MP's refer to their "constituency" (over here they say "District"). maybe a video on the political structure would be informative
It's a tricky one. Traditionally we had counties, which were our equivalent of states, although a lot smaller and with far less power than in the US - a county can't set its own laws or sales taxes, for example. And in rural areas, those counties generally still hold good. But in larger urban areas, counties have often been disbanded for official use and replaced by city councils or metropolitan districts/boroughs that cover one large town or city and its surrounding area. And as county boundaries have often changed over time, it can lead to long and protracted arguments about what counts as which county! Generally, the older people are and the longer they've lived in area, the more likely they are to refer to it by the traditional county name - but younger people and those who have more recently moved there are likely to refer to it by the name of the nearest city or major town. Political constituencies don't mean anything outside of politics. Most people know which constituency they live in, but few could tell you where its boundaries are. And again, they change frequently in order to try to keep the number of people living in each one roughly balanced.
Interesting. Over here we have cities, towns, counties, etc. and they do have the power to tax as they see fit. I live in a city that is not within a county. but there are plenty of cities that are within a county. Each municipality has the power to pass ordinances and local taxes. It gets more complicated when a city or town is inside a county and different rules apply for each entity. We have a three tier system, Federal Law, State Law and Local Law. States are like small countries, I guess.

Star spangel banner is the name of the national anthem. I believe the authors name is Francis Scott Key, It wa inspired during the bombardment on Ft Mchenry at Maryland by the red coats during war of 1812. (Or was it 1814) The ft was thought to be lost do to the heavily pbombarding through out the night. They were out manned and out gunned by the Royal Navy, they managed to dug in and slug it out through out the night. If my memory serves me correctly the Royal Navy had taken a beating. Which some scholars say was the turning point of the war. Others claim however it was ol hickory himself that fought off the red coats at the battle of New Orleans, that led to another catchy tune battle of New Orleans by Johnny Horton. As far as ft mchenry goes to everyone’s amazement they didn’t fall. Francis Scott Key I believe was on a boat not from the battle, not to far off distance watching the heavily bombardment of the royal navy through out the night. He was inspired by it, he wrote the poem when he noticed both the flag and the ft had not fallen to those bloody red coats.

The thing to remember about national anything is that it is proposed in Congress and voted on. I don't know that there was ever any pressing need to name a flower. More than likely the result of some lobbying.
Mt. McKinley now called Denali, but it's not the tallest from it's base. The tallest US mountain (from it's base) is Mauna Kea in Hawaii; it's actually the world's tallest mountain at over 10,000 meters.

In terms of land area (not population), Jacksonville in Florida is often cited as the largest city with a population of less than a million but a size over 2000sq. km. But in Alaska (which does not border any other part of the U.S., connecting instead to Canada), which is largely open area anyway, there is a "city" with a population of less than 1000 having an area of about 25000sq. km. called Yakutat--almost half as big as the whole of England.

- The highest mountain in the States is Denali, which is in Alaska. (I didn't know that. I had to google it.)

To be fair in the grand scheme of British history the American Revolution was a very small side note compared to the Crusades, Napoleonic wars and the numerous other wars with France in their history. Not bad, for Brits...good job. Just to clarify, the rose has been our national flower since 1985. The largest city by population is indeed New York City, but it is not the largest by land area. That would be Sitka, Alaska with a land area of 2,870.3 square miles. NYC is only 304.6 square miles. "The Star-Spangled Banner" is our national anthem. However, there are 2 other songs that we all learn as children in school: "America the Beautiful" and "America" also known as "My Country 'Tis of Thee". Not to be nerdy here but I think Leah means the first flag (Betsy Ross) flag had a circle of 13 stars to represent the original 13 colonial states. First used well after the revolutionary war. So she is correct.
All sorts of flags were used during the Revolutionary War. There was no standard flag until later in the war. The most popular flag early on had the union jack in the canton with the 13 stripes, known as the Grand Union Flag.
As for stars in the American flag, there's been a lot of different versions. The first official flag in 1977 was described as having 13 stripes and 13 stars, but there was no official arrangement for those 13 stars and so some were just in rows, some were in the shape of a circle, and so on.
In 1795, we added two new states to the union, and went to a flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes. In fact, our national anthem is written about the 15 star and 15 stripe flag over Fort McHenry in the War of 1812.
It wasn't until 1818 that we really began the tradition of adding new stars for each state, and keeping the number of stripes to 13 for the original 13 colonies. By then, there were already 20 states, so they changed the flag to 20 stars and 13 stripes. There's actually two common versions of this flag, one with the stars in rows, and one where the stars form a constellation that looks like a star shape. Prior to 1912, the arrangement of the stars didn't matter, just the number of them, so there's been many different versions of different American flags as we've added more states. Anyway, we kept adding more states, and therefore kept adding more stars. There's been 21, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 43, 44, 45, 46, 48, 49, and 50 star flags. By law, all of these flags are still valid to be flown anywhere under any occasion where the current 50 star flag is flown. A lot of Americans own 13 star flags (usually in the circle arrangement), and a lot of 48 star flags are still in circulation since that one was around for 47 years, and is still in living memory. The current flag has been around for almost 58 years, the longest of any American flag.
By law, the American flag only can be changed now on the July 4th that follows a new state's acceptance to the union, so if Puerto Rico were to become a state tomorrow, we wouldn't change the flag for a couple more months, and if they became a state on July 5th of this year, we'd go almost a full year before updating the flag.

Since your questions were already answered, here is a little side fact if u didn't know. The capital, Washington, D.C. is not part of any U.S. state. It is it's own district/territory. All three branches of the federal government of the United States are centered in the District-Congress(legislative),
President (executive), and Supreme Court (judicial). The citizens of Washington, D.C. also pay one of the highest taxes in the country.

For example, I live in an area called Washington, PA, which is 30 mins South of Pittsburgh. The county I live in is called Washington County as well. But,the city I live in is called Washington & had a completely different zip code than any other Washington in the country. But, when I tell people where I'm from, I say Pittsburgh area. Cuz when I say Washington, they think I am from D.C. Haha I know. It gets sooo complicated.

I didn't know the US in general had a flower, but every state has a flower! I'm from Texas and when you read that question the bluebonnet popped into my head, but then I realized that's just for Texas and got confused lol😄 It's even pretty common for people to think that it's illegal to pick bluebonnets in TX (you get told that growing up), and while it isn't illegal, it's probably best not to get caught picking them!😅 And P.S. I've just returned from a trip to google, where I found you were right--the national flower is the rose. Also, Denali is in Alaska, between Anchorage and Fairbanks, and has a national park surrounding it. Many times, it's been called the Serengeti of the North because of all the animals there.

Don't diss my home state of Wyoming! It is called the Equality State because it was the first state to grant women the right to vote! It has beautiful mountains, wonderful prairie, Yellowstone National Park, and just the right amount of people per square mile (meaning not many). Also, did you know that the tune to the Star Spangled Banner (our national anthem) is a British drinking song called "To Anacreon in Heaven"? I was also rather surprised in your last quiz video that I just watched how much you don't know about the US. I had British history in school since I was 11 and from that time on also studied a lot of British and European history on my own (my favorite being the medieval time period). But maybe it is a generational thing; I am a lot older than you two. I love your videos though - you seem to have a lot of fun!

It’s not now called Denali, it’s always been Denali Mt. Mckinley comes from an Arrogant gold prospector who won the republican presidential nomination and thought the tallest peak should now be named after him. The original name has always been Denali which means “the great one” in Native Athabaskan (an Alaskan Native tribe).

The mountain was renamed in favor of an assassinated US President, who is much less known to Americans. Easy to forget him now and feel good in self hate to rename it Denali.
When you ask what is the biggest city, that is sometimes a trick question. This means that cities you would never count as large cities by population can have huge land boundaries. Orlando Florida and Tucson arizona are such cities.

That's a good idea, we'll add it to the list. Yes, England is made up of counties!
It's a tricky one. Traditionally we had counties, which were our equivalent of states, although a lot smaller and with far less power than in the US - a county can't set its own laws or sales taxes, for example. And in rural areas, those counties generally still hold good. But in larger urban areas, counties have often been disbanded for official use and replaced by city councils or metropolitan districts/boroughs that cover one large town or city and its surrounding area. And as county boundaries have often changed over time, it can lead to long and protracted arguments about what counts as which county!
Generally, the older people are and the longer they've lived in area, the more likely they are to refer to it by the traditional county name - but younger people and those who have more recently moved there are likely to refer to it by the name of the nearest city or major town.
Political constituencies don't mean anything outside of politics. Most people know which constituency they live in, but few could tell you where its boundaries are. And again, they change frequently in order to try to keep the number of people living in each one roughly balanced.
Interesting. Over here we have cities, towns, counties, etc. and they do have the power to tax as they see fit. I live in a city that is not within a county. but there are plenty of cities that are within a county. Each municipality has the power to pass ordinances and local taxes. It gets more complicated when a city or town is inside a county and different rules apply for each entity. We have a three tier system, Federal Law, State Law and Local Law. States are like small countries, I guess.

I believe the authors name is Francis Scott Key, It wa inspired during the bombardment on Ft Mchenry at Maryland by the red coats during war of 1812. (Or was it 1814) The ft was thought to be lost do to the heavily pbombarding through out the night. They were out manned and out gunned by the Royal Navy, they managed to dug in and slug it out through out the night. If my memory serves me correctly the Royal Navy had taken a beating. Which some scholars say was the turning point of the war. Others claim however it was ol hickory himself that fought off the red coats at the battle of New Orleans, that led to another catchy tune battle of New Orleans by Johnny Horton. As far as ft mchenry goes to everyone’s amazement they didn’t fall. Francis Scott Key I believe was on a boat not from the battle, not to far off distance watching the heavily bombardment of the royal navy through out the night. He was inspired by it, he wrote the poem when he noticed both the flag and the ft had not fallen to those bloody red coats.

The thing to remember about national anything is that it is proposed in Congress and voted on. I don't know that there was ever any pressing need to name a flower. More than likely the result of some lobbying.

Mt. McKinley now called Denali, but it's not the tallest from it's base. The tallest US mountain (from it's base) is Mauna Kea in Hawaii; it's actually the world's tallest mountain at over 10,000 meters.

Hi Joel! If you want to learn the names of the state's then there is a children's song called "fifty nifty" that says all of them in alphabetical order. They used to play that song every Friday in elementary (primary) school. You can find it on youtube.
