I remember diesel swapping an Isuzu Trooper. I put all this time and effort into it and every time I went out wheeling I broke something. I'm putting a ton of new experience into it just to be the 1% that can finish something. Point being is you can't judge yesterdays tasks with today's wisdom. It'll just hold ya back.
    Be glad she's running.

You know... I've seen it few times since you had it done now, and I keep thinking some louvers painted to match the body on that rear window would look good kind of tie in with you choppy cut up custom front, and would be good ventilation for the motor as you don't need a real rear window as you have a mid window, however being wider you can't just go buy so I don't know... proud of you Preston for finally getting it done! It's only going to get better from here!

In the 60s N.H.R.A. had modified VW classes. Even back then we had handling issues. Slicks made a big improvement in handling and I think those fenders being pieced look cool, but kill any downforce. Remember, this body is basically a crude airfoil that can blow over at just over 100 mph. We solved the lift problem by taking the cheap stock import replacement fenders ( they are actually lighter than fiberglass), index them with the front about 4 inches lower than the front pan, staying on the stock mounting bolt radius. You may have to drill to get the mounting bolts to line up. Bolt the fenders on from the bottom of the headlight buckets forward and make a fill panel to close the gap between the fenders. Flex, bend, add pieces, do what you have to do to get the rear of the fenders where you want them to be. This should help settle down the front end. We had to use air-cooled VW engines and didn't have the budget for stroker cranks and big bore cylinders so we built 1600cc engines and lightened the car to reach the weight break. We raced against a guy who was sponsored by the local VW speed shop. He would run 13.4s like clockwork to our 13.8s, but as we refined our setup we got closer. When we ran 13.6 off the trailer, he protested us on a rule that was strictly cosmetic. We came back the next week legal with our " mishap motor". We called it that because when I was milling the heads, the cutter broke and put a rip in the chamber. These heads are pocket milled and not decked like most heads and all the experts said "cut more than .080" and you are asking for trouble". That rip was almost DOUBLE that! I only had these heads so I had to clean up that chamber and match the other 3 to it. Back at the shop, I cut a set of pushrods to fit the shorter spacing and used a set of dished pistons to kill some compression. At the track that next weekend, we unloaded the car and preyed. First run was 13.5. We tuned on it and the second pass was 13.00 !!! The 3rd pass was 13.1, slower but enough to beat our rival. The 4th run proved the experts right when the flywheel twisted off the crank, but we proved our point.

Don't beat yourself up over the nerves. I use to race all the time and quit but my dad hit me up a few years later to run a truck for him. I was so nervous I tried to take off on the first yellow bulb then stomped harder on the brake deep staging and then finally taking off on last yellow and still had a 0 something light. It was crazy how I felt setting there and had no real reason for being that nervous. Lol You did great and I'd love to see more out of the Bug.
