I have travelled in the first rake of Vaigai in my childhood. It was an MG rake with a beautiful Green-Yellow livery (similar to Sapthagiri till recently). Train had only second class but was upholstered with premium leather . It had tinted glass on the windows and tube lights. Loco link was YDM4 end to end with a change of loco at TPJ. Stops were Villupuram, Vriddhachalam, Trichy and Dindigul. Train was impeccably clean and well-maintained as Tuesday was an off-day. Catering was in-house by SR and excellent. Overall a top-class experience.
The super fast train was reduced to a normal express by introducing stops in Chengalpattu, Tambaram etc. The railways are totally responsible for slowing down the train after MG conversion and electric loco usage !!
MG rake la Vaigai train has five stops only.... Chennai Egmore, villupuram, virudhachalam, Trichy, Dindugal, Madurai only... now BG rake la overs stops here...so travelling time 7 hrs only done..
Nice memories. I travelled in Vaigai from Day 1 for decades in MG with its sibling Pallavan. From 8 coach non a/c with a library of magazines and books and a small pantry to 16 coach to Vaigai then broken as Pallavan with added a/c chair car first in MG. It only had vinyl light green 2S seats and Maroon a/c cc as IR doesn't have leather even in Fist a/c. It was known for snacks like cutlets, curd vadai, bread omlet, masala dosa, sweet boli all served fresh. I used Pallavan after started as I could board at Srirangam. It was quite an experience but tiring in summer as MG used to shake a lot. Now I use Tejas Express mostly. Thanks.

Wow what a train this was once, when it took only 7 hrs to reach its destination Madurai covering 492 km in METER GUAGE , by diesel Loco, was v popular train in 80s . Also it's sister Pallavan express.
True. I loved traveling by both Vaigai and Pallavan. Unfortunately we started going by bus to Trichy so the journeys by Vaigai became part of history. The green and yellow diesel loco was the pride of the M.G. network.
I am very much happy to the worship of railway officers & stuff at Chennai Egmore Rail station before departure of the train. Really fine 🙂 that people of the Southern region of India of is very much devotional to God. Very nice videography. 👌

A brief intro about vaigai is nice. At the outset I would like to share certain info. 1. Vaigai was inaugurated with 8 coaches only. Even It’s BG brothers both Kovai n Brindavan too started with 8 coaches only. 2. AC coaches,pantry car and vendors crisscross are new concepts on those days. 3. YDMs honking n green yellow combo are most lovely moments. 4. Pallavan has started from MS but due MGs single line rush of traffic from to MS made it to move to TPJ was known to senior members who are regularly travelling In all it was nice to see such happenings n would be wishing for t18/20 sets soon
No sir. Vaigai started with 8 coaches one YDM4 A loco, then 16 coaches twin YDM4. From day one it had pantry services but no pantry car. They used to load in Mdu Tpj and Ms. A/c cc came after Vaigai was divided as Vaigai and Pallavan. I travelled in a/c cc regularly from 1987 onwards.
I had the opportunity of traveling by vagai Express in October 2011 from madurai to egmore..it was diesel till dindigul and wap4 loco from Itarsi els took it till egmore...great journey

1977 mg train 100 kmph speed equal to Kovai Brindavan trains bg train at 1977 at that time only single track now only upto madurai double track at mg max speed 100 kmph is very very good
