Thanks for posting this video. Two top ten ranked fighters in the great 1970's heavyweight division. Neither of them gets mentioned much anymore but they were up there with Ali, Foreman, Norton, Jimmy Young., etc.
The win against Earnie Shavers was no upset!!! Ron Lyle was a better, more complete fighter than Earnie Shavers. Ron Lyle was taller than Shavers; had a longer reach; better jab; moved better, laterally; and took shots better than Shavers!!! Earnie was a good fighter and an outstanding puncher, however, if u were fortunate enough to finish on ur feet, there was a good chance u would outpoint Shavers.
what a fight !!, i was exhausted just watching, for lyle to come back after that devastating knock down at the end of the second round and knock him out like that wow, what fighters they were then. lyles fight with foreman is even more dramatic. R.I.P Ron Lyle
KRA'KA REF WAS LIKE, "I LOVE TO SEE THIS, U TWO N-----, GO ON & KILL EA OTHER, I'M REALLY ENJOYING THIS", AS HE WALKS AROUND THE RING , MANY TIMES TURNING HIS BACK TO THE ACTION
That right cross Lyle hit him with at 9:13 was the real deal. Shavers made a big mistake by not going to one knee then. He stood up and let Lyle deliver about ten more smashes.
Conditioning was the difference in this fight. Shavers was backing up in previous round before the TKO by Lyle. Shavers was tired & lacked the skills to tie up Lyle in clinches to give him (Shavers) a minute to catch his breath. I saw Shavers lose to James "Quick" Tillis on the 1982 undercard to Holmes-Cooney. Shavers obviously did not train for a ten round fight & lost 8 of the 10 rounds to Tillis. Jerry Quarry was reportedly very confident before fighting Shavers because of Shaver's lack of defense & skills (Shavers always in front of his opponent).
Except for Foreman vs Lyle battle, lyle vs Shaver is one of the destructive war between two hard punchers reflecting the greatest and golden time of HW boxing.
It's outrageous that this is the only film of this historic fight----a slient movie. Why wasn't this covered by a major network? These were two big sluggers, ranked in the top ten.
Lyle had a war with Foreman, and 3 years later fought Cooney, he wasn't in shape, but you don't lose an iron chin. Holmes and Foreman both say Cooney was top 3 in power shots. He hit Lyle solid, the only reason he went down was a body shot that broke a rib. Cooney had a glass jaw, lyle and Shavers hit hard and had chins, as did Foreman (See the Foreman Lyle fight) one of the best heavyweight fights i've ever seen. It seemed like they had tougher chins than now. Fierce punches.
The ref is like that light bulb on the front on the Knight Rider car moving left and right!! Is he trying to see what is happening in the clinch or is he just keeping rhythm pacing left and right?!
I haven't seen a heavyweight fight like this one in many years. Most of today's top heavyweights couldn't hold a candle to either of these guys. These guys were the real deal. How the hell did Lyle get up from that punch in Round 2? If that shot landed 30 seconds sooner, Lyle wouldn't have made it out of that round. The minute to clear his head was what he needed.
This fight could have gone either way...each fighter was one big punch away from a TKO; both fighters withstood heavy punishment and what a way to end the fight by Lyle....talk about LIGHTS OUT!!!!!!
I just love it two cavemen just trying to beat the shit out each other brother yeah Lyle just got hammer power shavers got that power too but got tired then knocked silly both are tough
Jerry Quarry beat the hell out of both these fighters ! He ko'd Shavers in one and won a lopsided unanimous decision over Lyle almost knocking him out twice !!!
Kid you are right Jerry Quarry was a bad man rest his soul, but these cats weren't scrubs. This was the golden age of the heavyweight.Any number of these cats would run over any heavyweight of the last 20 years. You must include Jimmy Ellis,Jimmy Young,
2 of the hardest punching HWs of the last 60 years. This fight was anybody's to win. The first guy that landed the best shot won. I do think Lyle is very underrated in HW history, and IMHO, he had a better chin than Earnie. It took everything George Foreman had to KO Lyle. Most think Foreman beat Lyle due to his punching power, but I believe it was as much his chin as his power. Foreman had one of the best chins in HW history. He had a Lions heart, and got off the deck TWICE before KO'ing Lyle.....
what do you mean? this actual fight was a elimination bout, the winner was going to face foreman, lyle knocked out shavers and foreman knocked lyle, and foreman would have knocked shavers out also, george had an ATG chin, shavers...........not so much......... but both were tremendous punchers, shavers and foreman both have 68 knockouts knockout percentages in the 80% range (huuuge) and foreman has most knockouts within 4 rounds in BOXING HISTORY
Another Ernie the acorn classic😳 Facts never in cardio condition Could not fight off any angles Move a lick left he would almost fall out of the ring Very bad balance and horrible feet. Ron could have made better than these choices as we'll Moving off basic pro fighting angles and punching in more combinations. Don't spread that ko record either on 🌽😂 Box cutter 4times😉 Ex wife's 5 ko,s All records are padded to the max. Ron far more then Ernie's right ✋. The little bomber Jerry quarry beat both of these loads And knocked the breaks off shavers Single over hyped punch Made Ernie believe as well. And provided him with very limited boxing skills.
That's why Ali is the greatest because he fought everyone,Forman,Frazier ,Lyle ,shavers, norton, quarry, etc
Watching this kind of fights makes me appreciate Ali's style of dancing and moving and getting away from punches. he is the master.
What an era for the heavyweight division! Frazier,Ali,Foreman,Lyle,Shavers,Young!
Norton, Quarry ...
Not Young
Chuvalo, Bonavena, Patterson, Ellis,...
rip ron lyle,,who died nov 26,2011 at age 70,,,, a good heavyweight, good fighter,,, remember the fight with foreman???
Just proves how tough Ron Lyle was to stand toe to toe with Shavers
RIP ron lyle.he also gave ali a good fight.he got started late in boxing after being in prison. no heavyweight fights like this anymore.
There are no heavyweight fights like this anymore. This is just life and death pure and simple.
Two of the hardest punchers to ever step up to the ring exchanging nuclear bombs! Kudos to this two warriors, no shit !
Thanks for posting this video. Two top ten ranked fighters in the great 1970's heavyweight division. Neither of them gets mentioned much anymore but they were up there with Ali, Foreman, Norton, Jimmy Young., etc.
Ron Lyle's greatest win! Seems like he borrowed the "rope-a-dope" from Ali to get this KO/upset win!
The win against Earnie Shavers was no upset!!! Ron Lyle was a better, more complete fighter than Earnie Shavers. Ron Lyle was taller than Shavers; had a longer reach; better jab; moved better, laterally; and took shots better than Shavers!!! Earnie was a good fighter and an outstanding puncher, however, if u were fortunate enough to finish on ur feet, there was a good chance u would outpoint Shavers.
ron lyle what a great crowd pleaser he was.RIP.
what a fight !!, i was exhausted just watching, for lyle to come back after that devastating knock down at the end of the second round and knock him out like that wow, what fighters they were then. lyles fight with foreman is even more dramatic.
R.I.P Ron Lyle
lyle and shavers would be undefeated champions in today's joke of a heavyweight division.
KRA'KA REF WAS LIKE, "I LOVE TO SEE THIS, U TWO N-----, GO ON & KILL EA OTHER, I'M REALLY ENJOYING THIS", AS HE WALKS AROUND THE RING , MANY TIMES TURNING HIS BACK TO THE ACTION
Win a slugfest against Shavers AFTER getting flattened by him in the second, you've got to be respected.
Ron Lyle s best fight I wish they had audio to this fight
That right cross Lyle hit him with at 9:13 was the real deal.
Shavers made a big mistake by not going to one knee then. He stood up and let Lyle deliver about ten more smashes.
to think that Lyle followed this war up with his classic foreman fight. RIP Ron Lyle
one of best fights ever
Conditioning was the difference in this fight. Shavers was backing up in previous round before the TKO by Lyle. Shavers was tired & lacked the skills to tie up Lyle in clinches to give him (Shavers) a minute to catch his breath.

Incredible fight while it lasted. Poor Shavers was out of energy by the 5th.
Except for Foreman vs Lyle battle, lyle vs Shaver is one of the destructive war between two hard punchers reflecting the greatest and golden time of HW boxing.
Good fight - even the lack of audio didn't matter!
It's outrageous that this is the only film of this historic fight----a slient movie. Why wasn't this covered by a major network? These were two big sluggers, ranked in the top ten.

Lyle just lets Shavers tire himself out! BRILLIANT!

I'm astonished he even counted
Man that ref was too busy focusing on his dance routine that he didn't see the ropes holding up a knocked out man getting teed off on!!!!
This fight could have gone either way...each fighter was one big punch away from a TKO; both fighters withstood heavy punishment and what a way to end the fight by Lyle....talk about LIGHTS OUT!!!!!!

Jerry Quarry beat the hell out of both these fighters ! He ko'd Shavers in one and won a lopsided unanimous decision over Lyle almost knocking him out twice !!!
Quarry was a pretty good fighter but he never beat the best of his era, Ali and Frasier both throughly schooled him twice.
Kid you are right Jerry Quarry was a bad man rest his soul, but these cats weren't scrubs. This was the golden age of the heavyweight.Any number of these cats would run over any heavyweight of the last 20 years. You must include Jimmy Ellis,Jimmy Young,
Tyson fury would eat him for breakfast !
"Beat the hell out of ".....really? I saw the Lyle fight.
Thomas Deeb Ken Norton
awesome. Thank you for posting.

Great fight. What a war
and lyle's next fight was the famous foreman fight. damn, that's a tough set.
What was that Ref doing? Not stepping in & stopping the fight.
It look like he was doing some sort of dance: left and right left and right left and right - it's like he was trying to put everyone in a trance!
jeez crowd going insane. too bad about no audio. sick fight.
These two togather could knock down a bisan.
No audio sorry
I thought Ali Invented the "Rope A Dope" !!!
Now you know why foreman did not fight earnie shavers
you think foreman was afraid of a guy who jerry quarry took out in one round?
Wow have not seen this great fight, payday well earned and then some. Jerry Quarry got their numbers.
@ah93704
That was Shavers biggest problem just like George Foreman, he always punched himself out!
Talk about a pier six slugfest.
Too bad its only audio.
Holy fuck ! that was one brutal KO
Indeed, 11 direct hits in a row against a man not fighting back.
Turned out ok, Earnie's doing fine now.
@theMadH8r haha are you crazy?
you still have to see some great fights
I agree...

Lyle never gave Shavers a return match. If he would have fought Shavers in the late 70's Lyle would got kayoed.
Dam Shavers had hair?
Another Ernie the acorn classic😳
Facts never in cardio condition

And knocked the breaks off shavers
Single over hyped punch
Made Ernie believe as well.
And provided him with very limited boxing skills.
Wow
one of the greatest fight in division...lyle was true fighter while ali just mockery of sport.
I agree
