“Red balloon” keeps the syllables and avoids the fact that Americans and English speakers more broadly would never think of regular consumer balloons when hearing “air balloons” in the way a German would. They’d probably think of Zeppelins which obviously isn’t what’s being alluded to in a Cold War era song
I only like the sound of the beginning of this song the rest just sounds corny I know it’s about war but I wish they would of stuck with the sound of the beginning of the song and it would of been a smash hit
I'm suddenly thinking about a version of a popular kids song based on this. If one of those balloons should happen to pop 98 red balloons ??? If one of those balloons should happen to pop 97 red balloons ???
The current situation with NATO poking the Russian Bear, along with my love for awesome 80's synth tunes brought me here. So hilarious that this song is about a nuclear war being started by releasing 99 red balloons into the sky. If you didn't listen to the lyrics, you would think that it was just another happy summer jam! ROTFLMAO!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This song strangely fits. Ultimately that happened not because of the local rebels who couldn't realistically topple the government. It happened from outside interference by the world at large misidentifying the situation and an overreaction.

I've wondered why the English version is 99 Red Balloons. The German version is 99 Luftballoons٫ or 99 Air Balloons.
I think it’s just to make up the syllables, and saying air balloons wouldn’t really work in an English version.
Nowhere in the German language version does it mention “Red” balloons? Although the video contains a mix of red and white balloons.
