My wife and I are retired. We both have an Amazon Fire HD 8 with 64 GB storage and no add support. These devices are so inexpensive that we're comfortable getting the extras like adding a 128 GB SD card to each device. She has her device setup with her email address and I have mine sent up with my email account.
Recently, my daughter asked to borrow one of our Fire HD devices to take on a trip to the UK. We agreed to loan her one, but we just bought an additional unit instead of parting with one of our devices. She leaves for London tomorrow.

I brought the fire 8hd for $45 during Best Buy’s back to school sale strictly for reading and entertainment while traveling . If it gets damaged or left behind on a trip not a big deal.

Of course the iPad Mini is a lot better. At the price it ought to be! The Fire Tablets are best thought of as a giant iPod Touch: a media consumption device that can do a lot of other stuff. If I was taking a class I would use an iPad, but if I was flying to Japan I would definitely choose a Fire Tablet (probably the 7). I have a couple of iPads, and they’re fantastic! But most of the time I grab one of my Fire tablets. They are fine for most of what I use my tablet for, and if I drop one and it breaks (unlikely. They are pretty tough) the loss is no big deal. I just order another one (when it goes on sale for half off!)
Give a kid a $600 fragile iPad? Insane!

Lack of proper Y Tube on Fire puts me off totally, otherwise I would have it. Can you please stop jumping the video in and out, it's unnecessary and bloody annoying !!

If that is all you want it for, the Fire HD because it’s cheaper.

I got an hd8 plus 2022 for £80 it was a no brainier for what I wanted it for , I did consider the iPad mini but could not justify the price tag as a carry around device, I have the larger iPad 2021 10.2 for general use . For media use like Amazon prime and music the hd8 plus is great value

Would love to see the Kindle app side by side. I would like to see a color version of a Study Bible to see what the layouts look like on an Ipad vs the Fire. Also, what about a weight comparison? I am using an old Ipad Air 2. It is kind of heavy to read with one hand.

I have a fire hd8 2021 model but I only use it for reading and podcasts and maybe a few books but why did amazon take away the mirror share adaptive services because I also had a hd6 2015 model and that one thing I was most excited about

For a 6th of the price ($99 vs $600) the Fire HD is an awesome tablet for media consumption and light gaming. It's all about what you need a tablet for. I use my Fire HD Pluse for reading, social media, movies, video, music and surfing the web. Its speedy and battery life is really great at 10-12 hours. For productivity and creating content the iPad mini is a better option. All depends on your use case. Too bad there's aren't many 8 inch tablets put there.

Probably the iPad. I don’t think RUclips music has an app for the Fire tablet.

@@jeradtech I installed Google Play (using Android Central instructions) and after that YT Music. Things like Google Chat -- I had to install an older version (2021-May) as the new one crashed right away.

I bought the Fire HD Plus 5 months. It's anemic, buggy and crashes all the time. It was dirt cheap but as they say, you get what you pay for. I'll be buying an iPad.

WHAT! I only use mine with a 1 tb sd card, 1000 flac albums stored, take all the rubbish apps off you don't want, install media monkey hi res audio player play that music using the amazons 5.2 bluetooth sent to the £50 1Mii B06S+ LDAC Bluetooth 5.2 reciever which is plugged into your amp input. You have a great sounding jukebox of hires music at your finger tips on the cheap, I have no drop outs & the music quality is there. Outlay apart from music & amplifier £150.

I think you skipped some important things that would sway my decision as a parent. The problem with the amazon fire is that you have to use the kids app and pay to use the content if you want parental control-- and even then, amazon decides what's appropriate for your child and the best apps aren't available without internet connection. The reason I'm considering the ipad mini is because there seems to be better parental controls for the entire device and is more customizable for the parent without paying for the parental controls.
