I fall in love with the Koln concert as a kid... more than 30 years later, all your fantastic explanations are like a priceless gift to me! Thanks so much
Hello, kind of same thing for me. I've just started to play the first notes on garageband. making it sounds by my self was a amazing instant. Thanks a lot :D
You are a RARE case Henrik! I have NEVER seen a Classical pianist break things down harmonically/compositionally. It is more than rare to find a Classical pianist who knows and can explain these things. And you are paying respect to the Jazz (and Classical) master Keith Jarrett, amazing! I'm blessed to have found your channel, originally looking for Bach Invention analysis. God bless you!
It is an incredible work that is purely emotional and imorovized. I bought the LPs twice back then because I listened to it so often. I'm still discovering new things today. Keith Jarrett the god of improvisation. Thanks for the great video
Your video was an amazing discovery for me! The Köln Concert was my favorite jazz piano piece when I heard it as a teenager. Your detailed analysis - and your wonderful personality - makes for a mesmerizing video. I would love to hear what that concert hall's announcement tone actually sounds like! I believe the pedal sounds were added because Jarrett was so frustrated with that piano, he forced the broken pedal to become part of the music.
C’est absolument fantastique comme improvisation et vous démontré assurément aussi, votre talent exceptionnel de pianiste et de pédagogue, bravo à vous!
What a treat to have found you. I have listened to the Köln Concert for days on end and shed tears of transcendent joy to this magnificent piece of music. You analysis is so gratifying.
This is a great breakdown. As a musical idiot, I really appreciated this walk-through. This album should bring anyone to tears of beauty and amazement. Such a moving concert.
Great video! For more great jazz-piano with a bit of a classical tinge, I highly recommend you check out Don Pullen, especially his songs Ode to Life and Ah George, we hardly knew ya!
I tried part llc first and took 2 weeks for just first 8 bars. So far part l looks ok for introduction though my hand cannot reach 10th on white keys. I anyway appreciate your worlds first lesson video after nearly half a century has passed.
I though perhaps the very first bit might be easy. But it's much harder then I expected. However, from just picking thru the very beginning, that finger pattern of two on, skip a note, then two on, moved around harmonically, - and that 9 chord stretch, one whole tone past the octave stretch... Both those things just altered my improv yesterday... For the better. Thanks for doing this. Gonna do my best to plug thru by ear and your tutorial. Cheers!
Glad you liked them! I haen't touched parts IIa or b, because they feel much more like free improvisation over repeated ostinatos, which is harder to adapt for an "interpretation" than Part I with its more restrained sections. But I'm still glancing at part IIc at times...
@@SonataSecrets which by the way seems not to be an improvised tune (I even remember hearing the theme on some of the bootleg recordings that circulate online). It's now known as "memories of tomorrow"
What a great piece of music. I have the transcription. But it does me no good.Lol This was improvised and Keith Jarrett's genius. You can never copy this.
Hey, hello again. One question: When you say in min 12:47 that it is on phigyan mode, you are refering to E Phygian, didnt you? Cause i thought at the begining that you were refering to B phygian but it does not make so much sense... Thanks!
After all these years i finally understand the audience laughters at the beginning of the recordings.

Thanks, I'm so happy to hear that! :)

Thank you for sharing. I learnt the opening of the Koln Concert many moons ago. Time well spent.

This is a masterpiece of improvisational music making, and just a masterpiece in every sense❤️

Wonderful analysis of a stunningly beautiful album I've loved for decades. Thanks for this!
Amazing content and lovely interpretation Henrik, you've got an amazing sense of rhythm, just like Keith.
Thanks for sharing this, it's unvaluable.
This is so great. Thanks.
Thank you Henrik for the detailed analysis of the notes that were used...
This tutorial is fantastic thank you so much.

Thanks, yes it is so great music.
Sinne 5 Years i try to play piano. The beginning of the Köln concert is a dream. I think it is easy, but it is very difficult, but so nice.
WOW! My best compliments!
Cool and smart analysis of the opening of the piece. Thank you! 🎹🐬

Thanks for the tip, I will!
Tack för dagens nischade allmänbildning 🎹🎶
Varsågod! :)
Thank you maestro! Great video lesson. Now I can try to repeat some steps!
You're very welcome!
Jarrett said in a latter interview that "the piano was only satisfying in the middle register" and that greatly influenced how he played.
Great video! I'd love to hear your interpretation of part IIc!

Very clever of you. Good job!!!
4:15 Anyone visited the Opera House in Cologne? I wonder how the bell sounds like, too bad the opera house is under construction at the time being …
Superb!!

@ 12:52 this is B Locrian it would implied a F" otherwise. We can clearly hear Locrian mode anyway
Thank you very much for the 3 videos! Could you please please please do the exact same videos for the part IIb of the Koln concert ? 🙏🏼
Glad you liked them! I haen't touched parts IIa or b, because they feel much more like free improvisation over repeated ostinatos, which is harder to adapt for an "interpretation" than Part I with its more restrained sections. But I'm still glancing at part IIc at times...

The piano pedal was broken and noisy, so Jarrett integrated its sound as he couldn't completely avoid it.
Can you do a video on the analysis of Mozart sonata in C minor? I find your videos so helpful when learning a piece, thanks so much!!
This is probably the most requested piece by Mozart, so if I return to him in the future it's high on the list.
Can you do an analysis on Images (first part) by Debussy?
Thanks Henrik, very interesting to go deeper into the score. By the way, what is your piano, I love its tone.
What a great piece of music. I have the transcription. But it does me no good.Lol This was improvised and Keith Jarrett's genius. You can never copy this.
The part with the B pedal is the Locrian Mode, not Phrygian. 😉
The Piano has to be tuned :-) The video ist very good, musicians can understand everything.
😮🙏✨✨✨
Can you do an analysis of monologue 1 by John cale as seen in the American Psycho soundtrack?
