The musical composition was inspired by winter's death, slowly transforming into spring.
This video was filmed on a rather magical clearing in Breitenfurt.

I'm so glad I just now realized these instruments existed back then. I always thought all the "Norse" music were just putting bowed instruments in there because it sounds so "traditionally Scandinavian", but the violin was only invented in the 16th century and the cello in the 17th. I didn't realize there were other "violin-like" instruments well before then. (But how complicated is it really to realize grinding wires together makes a cool sound?)
The history of bowed instruments goes thousands of years back. There are concepts of hunters playing music, or creating sound with their hunting bows. This concept slowly (!) developed into the musical instruments we know today.
The idea for the Tagelharpa/Jouhikko/etc... for example was born out of plucked lyres played by mainland celts (Hallstatt era) with the combination of the horsehaired bow of central asians.
Due to the scattering travels/movements/cultural mixing of those celtic people this instrument developed into the Shetland Gue, the Welsh Crwth, the Tagelharpa, Talharpa, Jouhikko, etc...for example.
Other cultures also had bowed instruments way before they made their debut in europe --> Rebab, Kamancheh, etc.. for example.
Grinding two things together isn't that complicated, otherwise we would've been extinct by now ;)!
But seriously: I think the concept seems to be easy for us, because we know about it. But there are some important factors that are responsible for creating sound, when you "bow" of thing over another. Otherwise there'd be barely any noise...
Also the easier things (sometimes) are the hardest to find!

@@VedunianCraftthe Tagelharpa also reminds me a lot of the Chinese Erhu or Mongolian Morin khuur. At least it also seems like all are played way more by feeling and hearing the instrument, rather than following strict rules and systems and then adapting from there.
@@Thareldis Yes! Big fan of the Morin Khuur! That's why I have designed my lyres a bit longer and deeper to accompany my range of throat singing! Deeper horsehair and throat goes well together!
Well to play an instrument by feeling it's not a bad thing to know a bit about the rules and systems ;).
Might not seem that way at first, but it does give you freedom.
Of course you can build upon intuition completely, but it doesn't hurt to dabble a bit in theory.
In short: it's important to build up experience and know where you can draw (energy) from. When the inspirational process is over, it's good to know a bit about how to stick everything together ;)!
And that goes for all instruments generally!

I'm mostly Scandinavian by descent...
I was thinking about making an instrument, turns out it already exists and it's this one.
I also was trying to develop a folk style that appealed to me... it involves bowing a cello in the same way you bow it here, you're basically making exactly the music I would improvise on that guy. Lol.

There's a whole array of intriguing instruments to be found in russia/asia for example. Plucked and bowed. Like Khomys/Dombra and Igil or Morin Khuur, to name a few. There's so much more to discover!

I play notes up and down the scale on single strings. Chords (at the end of the video) are played on multiple strings.
On flat bridges all strings are bowed simultaneously. On round bridges you can leave out either the first or the third string giving you more options --> in tunings for example.
Strings that are bowed, except your (current) melody string function as drones.
This sounds more complicated than it actually is! It explains itself when you start playing!
What are these strings? And a bow. Of what material? Sounds really cool

Oh, how did that happen? Why don't you ask the person who made that lyre?
You can't just order spare parts (rarely you'll find that anywhere) --> most likely a new bridge from someone else is not going to fit, because parts are (if you do it right) made only (!) for the dedicated instrument!! Dimensions always vary. Parts must fit perfectly!

Die Anzahl der Haare kommt auf deine gewünschten Noten in Verbindung mit der Mensur (Saitenfreischwinglänge) an. Also die Länge zwischen Steg und Wirbel (oder Sattel fals du einen hast).
Meine Instrumente passe ich meiner Größe an (baue nach eigenem Plan). D3 kann sein, ja. Meine Stimmung liegt eine Oktave über der Stimmung "normaler" Jouhikkos (wenn ein D vorkommt) und eine unter den Celloharpas (wenn ein D vorkommt) --> mehr in Richtung Viola.
Meine Haaranzahl pro Saite wird dir daher nix helfen, da wir sehr wahrscheinlich unterschiedliche Mensuren haben. Dh. meine Saiten auf deiner Leier werden entweder zu stark oder zu schwach sein.
Ich weiß auch nicht welches Pferdehaar du hast. Mongolisches ist viel feiner als chinesisches, was sich wiederum auf die Anzahl der Haare auswirkt.
Versuch mal ca. 20 für die erste Saite und hör/spüre wie das klingt. Wenns nicht passt, dann entweder mehr oder weniger...so lang bis du deine optimale Saitenstärke hast.
Dauert ein wenig, aber zahlt sich aus 💪!

Ich habe schon etwas mit (china) pferdehaar Experiment und habe aktuell violinensaiten aufgespannt.
Mir fällt es extrem schwer, eine tonleiter zu finden .
Auf dem keyboard ist das vergleichsweise sehr einfach .
Ist es wichtig, dass die melodiesaite eine bestimmte Stimmung bekommt ?
Also sollte ich z.b. darauf achten, dass diese saite in bestimmter Stimmung eine bessere tonleiter hat als in anderen Stimmungen? Z.b. E4 klingt besser als G4
@@VedunianCraftich habe eine 4saitige tagelharpa gebaut mit einer Gesamtlänge von 60cm und einer saitenfreischwinglänge von 35 cm .
Bassbalken und stimmstock vorhanden.
Vielleicht hilft das beim eingrenzen.
Mir ist aufgefallen , dass ich das chinahaar nur bis F4 stimmen kann , bei G4 hält es den Ton auch nichtmehr und reißt unheimlich schnell.
@@BeardedSkull Ja, ein Keyboard ist kein Vergleich zu einem Streichinstrument. Bei letzterem können Tage, oder Woche vergehen bis ein Anfänger brauchbare Töne herausbekommt. Bei einem Keyboard drückst du ja "nur" die Tasten ;).
Nein. Die Melodiesaite bekommt keine "besondere" Note zugeordnet. Alle Saiten sollten harmonisch zu einander gestimmt sein. Quarten/Quintenstimmungen eignen sich hier für ganz gut.
Es gibt keine Noten die besser als andere klingen. Es mag sein, dass manch einer bestimmte Noten mehr mag als andere. Ich bevorzuge Stimmungen in D/C, weils in meiner Gesangsreichweite liegt!
@@BeardedSkull Nunja, wenn du zuviele Haare für eine zu hohe Note hast, reissen die natürlich! So gesehen passt die Haaranzahl für ein F. Wenn du ein höhreres G stimmen willst, musst du die Haare reduzieren.
Es scheint mir allerdings so, dass du eventuell für das F schon zu viele hast. Normalerweise sollte ein Ganzton nach oben machbar sein, ohne dass etwas reisst.

Wow great video, I have just received my first three-string tagelharpa too, the version a little smaller, I also tune it in DAD but from the first string you don't hear much sound when I change the notes, can I ask you for some advice?
Hello! Great that you've found your way to a bowed lyre!
Well, it's hard giving advice based on very little information.
*I can give you general information I like to give to beginners:*
- when starting to play forget about your fretting hand (the one that "grabs" the notes on the string) and focus on your bowing tech. only. It is very important to get fluid and not too hasty motions all across the strings/bowhair. Also aim for (almost) perfect 90 degrees to the strings. Be steady and don't force the pressure. Let it sing on it's own.
- if you use too much rosin, your instrument will scratch. Not enough will produce weak sounds.
- when you bowing hand gets it's right somewhat, get a tuner and try to find a note. Only ONE! Try to remember the harmony and don't form a habit to look where that note is. It's most important that you feel and hear where it is. Your eyes will deceive you. A harmony doesn't. Because you don't have any frets (and maybe horsehair strings), nor markings your notes will "move" a bit. So it's very important you know the notes by heart/ear rather than your eyes.
- if the first note "works" go find another. Keep your hand always in the same position and remember the spacing between the notes
- find other notes and do the same thing over again. Keep it at 4 notes max. for the beginning! Depending on your musical talent and skill you can find more or less. As a fresh starter stay with 1-2 notes (a second/third comes from the open strings).
- if you don't hear a lot of sounds, you might need to adjust the pressure with your fretting hand. Try to find a sweet spot by slowing increasing and decreasing the pressure on the string.
- don't rush anything
- learning curve will be slow for some time
- have or learn patience
Problems often occur when you overwhelm yourself in the beginning. Your brain and muscles have to learn several different movements all at once, where it is easier to break them down and learn them one by one.
When your bowing tech. doesn't perform "saturated" strokes, your notes will sound weak. This will get worse when you try to play different notes!!!
When I play, I focus on my bowing hand mainly!! It's make or break! The ability to create proper sound comes from the bow and your technique with the correct amount of rosin.
You need time for that. Your instrument needs time for you to get around.
As time goes by and you bond more and more with your instrument, it will get easier.
Just like with a horse ;)! For me a lyre is a living being. On some days it works. On others not so much..;)

How did you learn to build it ? And is it difficult ?
I did a lot of research in luthiery and violinmaking overall.
Before I started to make one I made sure I get everything I need for all the parts I wanted to build. After I bought some essential tools and woods I basically just started.
There's a lot of try and error involved. I kept going, kept re-evaluating build after build and learnt how to play it simultaneously to get a better understanding of what I was doing. And so on..
After a couple of builds I contacted a luthier and got some tipps. At that time I bought some plans, to further study and modify what I already could do.
The tagelharpa I am playing in this video is not my first build, but my seventh overall.
In the beginning like many things it had it's own difficulty to it. And also like many other things it will get easier if you just keep going and experimenting.
Being a musician and woodworker helps a lot! And asking for help if you're stuck!

What are your strings made out of? I only ask because I need to restring mine and want to get the right material.
I use horse hair for most models.
There's no "right" material for strings. It's all personal taste of players/makers.
You can choose between horse hair, nylon (fishing line), dacron (bow sinew), steel, gut and fake gut for example.
If you like how your lyre sounds or sounded, I suggest restringing it with the same material. Or another if you're getting curious!

@@harom_9205 You can ask, but I can't tell. It depends on the note you want, the tension you like to achieve and the scale of your instrument. And that information I don't have.
I suggest you buy some horsehair or dacron b50 and go for "try and error". The tension of all strings should be very close to each other. Dacron stays in tune nicely!
You also can buy steel or gut strings. Look up violin/viola scales, compare to your lyre and choose accordingly.
