The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Woman, published in the late 1700’s, supports the political philosophy that a rule of law represents a social contract with the people.
The event that influenced the writing of both documents was the French Revolution
You see, in the Old Regime, the Third Estate, which represented the common man, tenants and peasants, supported the First and Second Estates, represented by the clergy and the nobility, with their taxes and labor.
One effect of this historical development was that a republic was established and the king was beheaded.
Then, combine this with harsh economic conditions, where efforts to stimulate industry through trade agreements caused unemployment, the conditions were ripe for the start of the French Revolution.
