I'll never forget the incredible harmony of Peter and Gordon. Their music brings back memories of a much simpler and more innocent world that I miss so much.
Was it ever... I didn't get to experience it as I was born in 84, but I know how it was because of my parents. This country was much happier, healthier, safer, moral, loving, etc, etc... We can have it again if we just do the right things and that's a whole different topic. What a beautiful song that reflects a beautiful innocent period...
War, racism, homophobic, denying women their rights, assinated president...it all existed back then. The 60s were a very turbulant time. This song, written by Del Shannon, came out in November 1964. Nine years after the Vietnam war started, months before the Civil Rights act was passed. 1 year after JFK was killed, 4 years before MLK and RFK were killed. There was a lot of ugliness in the so called much more simpler and innocent world. It just was being glossed over much more back then as you only had a few channels on television and the newspaper was your source for into.

Had a chance to see Peter Asher perform in February 2016 on the Flower Power Cruise. He is an amazing musician and story teller. We listened to him for 2 hours as he sang his music and talked about his amazing life, his time with Gordon, their early days, about the time Paul McCartney lived in his basement and how the Beatles started, about his time producing for some of the greatest artists of the love generation.
Still my favorite Peter & Gordon song, despite the two well known songs that McCartney provided. I did not realize it was written by another great - Del Shannon
"I Go to Pieces" passed to Peter and Gordon when that duo and Del Shannon, along with the Searchers, shared the bill for a tour of Australia in the second half of 1964. At one of the tour's venues, Shannon pitched "I Go to Pieces" to the Searchers. singing it for the group in their dressing room. Peter and Gordon in the dressing room next door overheard Shannon singing "I Go to Pieces" to the Searchers, who weren't interested in it and, recognizing the song's potential to become a Merseybeat-style hit, Peter and Gordon asked Shannon to let them record it.
Gave the Searchers a tape of Marshall Crenshaw material once and they weren't interested. Made me wonder what they were looking for in the way of material.

Peter Asher and his sister Jane were child actors in the 1950s. They played siblings in a 1955 episode of the television series The Adventures of Robin Hood. Jane Asher dated The Beatles' Paul McCartney between 1963 and 1968, and Peter and Gordon recorded several songs written by McCartney but credited to Lennon-McCartney. Those hits included "A World Without Love" (US & UK #1), "Nobody I Know" (US #12; UK #10), "I Don't Want To See You Again" (US #16, but not a hit in the UK), and "Woman". With "Woman", McCartney used the pseudonym Bernard Webb to see whether he could have a hit song without his name attached. First pressings of the US Capitol single listed the composer as "A. Smith". The song reached #14 in the US and #28 on the British charts in 1966. Peter and Gordon also recorded the John Lennon-penned Lennon-McCartney song, "If I Fell", which was previously recorded by The Beatles and released on their 1964 album, A Hard Day's Night.
