Did the crossing from Portsmouth to Bilbao back in the early 90s in December. Was sick has a dog both ways. The whole ship was. People were throwing up in their soup😂😂
Getting very arty with that "long pole" 😃Every year we consider the santander crossing, but it just goes a bit too far south for us and I'd have to drive north for 8 hours. Before you say it, no I would not consider staying in Spain, they're so uncultured. I'm joking of course! Just can't wait for the summer to return! Great footage as always..
If things stay the way they are you may well need to be catching that boat to Santander so that you can sneak back in to France from the other end!! Vive la France!
According to my ticket it's two evening meals that are included in the price , two breakfast meals continental style are also included in the price. English breakfast is extra. At first I thought oh no ! two nights on board instead of the usual one night but then I thought no that is a good idea as previously arrived early evening then a dash to find a camp site, now arrive early morning so all day to get to where you want to be ( Camping Riaza ). Booked June just hoping it will actually happen this year. We have been travelling to Europe in our caravan since 1997.
Hi, re the meals, you are not being mislead by the " x 2" on the ticket are you? on our ticket this refers to 2 x people not 2 x evening meals. Yes the 2 nights onboard actually works really well by giving you the whole day to get to a campsite. Fingers crossed for this year, I'm feeling optimistic 😀 Andy & Michelle
Great stuff My wife also called Michelle and also drinks all the wine . Saying that DFDS Newcastle to Amsterdam was £19.95 a glass and £10 for beer so your ferry looked goo prices.. 2nd fridge tip but only done for 16 hrs but think it should be goof for 26 hrs. Keep fridge full and have plenty freezer blocks in the freezer Move them to fridge when you switch gas off. We have had the ferry drive debate and was great to see your take on it but your figures do not match ours £180-200 return ferry ( Channel crossing ) £400 fuel (£200 each way 1000 miles). Aires so no camp fees and fridge full of food so no diners. Couple of blongeries for fresh croissants etc.£10 We always go toll free except to pass Rouen as cheaper than going around, few euros . But no relax but I do treat it as part of the holiday but still might do it your way one day. Great info. .
Thanks Martin, lots of great tips in there 👍 agreed, if ok with the long drive and using Aires then the drive is the way to go. There must be something about Michelle’s!! 🍷🍷🍷 🤣🤣🤣
We are on the Galicia when we drive down to our Spanish home later in the year , it was great to see , looks to be a great improvement on the older ships
Hi Pauline, we've been on the Pont Aven a few times in the past to Spain, Galicia wins hand down on the new modern airy feel and the video on demand is great but we missed the variety of inside areas that the Pont Aven has. We though Galicia would feel bigger but it actually feels smaller. Still, Galicia is a great ship and we really enjoyed the journey 😀
Love your videos, very informative and love your cinematography. What do you both work at that allows you such long holidays, keep safe and keep the great videos coming x
Thanks Pauline, its great to hear you are enjoying our videos😀, I'm still working full time (IT job) but took advantage of a change of job to take time off which gave us 5 weeks for our Scotland trip. Lots of videos in the pipeline 👍
Hi Steve, yes we enjoyed it, a great way to start a holiday. There were specific cabins allocated for passengers with dogs and there was a dog walk area on the side of the boat for walking dogs, it wasn't huge though, i would very roughly estimate 2.5m wide by 12-15m long. Dogs were not allowed on the big open space on the top deck that you can see in this video, Cheers... Andy&Michelle
@@ExtremeMotorhomingAdventures thank you. We used to book the Commodore cabins - very luxurious but expensive - your video prompts me to have another look. We have a caravan and X5 so expect the cost to be horrible! Hadn't realised it was still a 2-nighter outbound.

Well that was clearly the largest pole on that Nudist beach 😂 what must the locals have thought when Andy started filming 😂 lovely video. Love how you guys can do chilled too. Also loved the tips and Michelle, Clare said she loves your excited squeals. Great stuff both 😊 xx
The chilled was largely enforced on us by being on a boat or in the Motorhome but we did enjoy it up until the point we couldn't find anywhere to park up for the night! Cheers to you both😊 Andy&Michelle x
Hey guys thanks for uploading this info really good to see. I'm going to Spain on the bike later in the year. What do I need my covid passport & Spanish locator form. Is there anything I'm missing for the covid checks? Thanks Chris.
Hi Chris, glad you found some useful info there....obviously all these rules are subject to change but at the moment yes, its just the Covid Passport with evidence of being fully vaccinated and Spanish Locator Form. Then on return, the UK Locator form (which requires you to enter the reference for the day 2 test that you've booked). You can partially create the Spanish locator form in advance but you need to wait until 48 hours before arrival in Spain to complete it. (not sure if its still an issue but the Spanish locator form didn't work with hotmail and gmail accounts for receiving the email to authenticate!!) There's good info on the Brittany Ferries Website and the call centre is really helpful so if you are unsure nearer the time I would speak to them, Have a good trip later in the year...Andy&Michelle
Better pronounced Ga -licia (with a slight pause) . Not yet tried the new ship but do this crossing several times a year on their older vessels. Looks good .
Thanks for the pronunciation Steven 😀Yes it was notably newer feeling but did have less inside space in terms of different areas. Overall we liked it 👍 Cheers...Andy&Michelle
New subscriber here… enjoyed the vid. We live in south west France about 3 hours from Bilbao. Just booked two trips to/ fro UK. Looked at the Spanish ferry routes to save the drive up but (1) don’t seem to operate before March and (2) thought the price that I calculated was a bit cheeky compared to a drive ( fuel, tolls and lower crossing fees). Price aside seems from your trip you think a good option?
Hi Paul, thanks for subscribing 👍😀 which Ferry routes are you looking at? the Brittany Ferries Route operates all year round Portsmouth to Santander and I think Bilbao as well. Price aside I'd rather sit on the boat than stare at an autoroute. If I was taking it easy then I maybe would drive over the course of 3-4 days and have decent stopovers. The one thing that can ruin the boat experience is the bay of Biscay, out of 5 crossings we had one bad one and it really was a bad experience! Cheers Andy&Michelle
I love driving slowly through France , but then i can go away for motnhs at a time so rushing is not my thing and the £1200 ticket price seems absurdly high for off season
Great to hear you liked the video 😀 the only Brexit issue was we were a bit more conscious not to be taking food like meat and diary but we couldn’t have the fridge on anyway, passport control seemed the same as usual, Andy&Michelle 😀👍
Thanks Bobby, there were a fair number of people with dogs but dogs are limited to a smallish outside area to exercise and the cabin. Some of our friends did the crossing with a dog and did find it a bit restrictive. Hopefully France will be opening in the not too distant future!
@@ExtremeMotorhomingAdventures Nowhere. Here. Sold the camper van and became disenchanted with (all but your) van life videos. Still climbing those mountains though.
@@FancyMcDancy We actually mentioned you a couple of weeks ago and wondered where you had gone so it was great to hear from you 👍🗻🏔 Cheers...Andy&Michelle 😀
Think we will stick to driving via Dover much cheaper and as you used Aires why include campsite fees ?. Also no need to use tolls especially sumer time as France is a fantastic country to drive through. What about all the rough crossings going over the bay of Biscay, not for us. Have fun.
Hi John, yes... given the time to take it leisurely down to Spain we would also choose the drive as we agree, it is beautiful off the toll roads and cheaper 😀 Andy & Michelle
Hi...Club Voyage gives you discount off the total cost of the crossing so yes the cabin is discounted with it too. It also gives you discount on food purchased in the restaurant but it doesn't give you discount off the bar, wifi or duty free (On this trip the cabin was £99 each way but I included the cabin price in the total cost at the end you really do need one) 😀
@@ExtremeMotorhomingAdventures Wow that was a speedy reply. LOL. Thank you so much for sharing the information. I'm planning my first road trip around mainland Europe this year. Just me and my 9 year old son in our campervan. So the tips are extremely helpful, especially about joining Club Voyage to get the discount.
@@drewhodge3820 we got 30% off the price with club voyage but it looks like this year it drops to a mean 5% in high season so I would check if worth buying depending on the time of year you are going, enjoy your road trip, you’ll have an awesome time 😀
@@ExtremeMotorhomingAdventures Hopefully we are going to do a summer trip into Europe for a few weeks and then next Autumn-Winter we are going to chase the sun down southern Spain for a couple of months (fingers crossed)
Hi, good tips but if I may, I would comment points 8 and 10: 8. I usually do the journey UK-Portugal-UK and cost wise it’s still a lot cheaper and faster to drive through France especially if you care to avoid some motorways to keep the costs down. At least by car. Brittany Ferry prices are extremely unreasonably high especially on the high season. Talking about membership prices is unfair if you don’t add the membership fee which is probably not worth it if you don’t travel often enough. 10. Yes, fuel is definitely cheaper in Spain but the quality is definitely worse! I can do more miles with any BP/Shell/Galp premium fuels refuelling in either UK or Portugal than with any fuel taken in Spain...
Hi, thanks for the points, it always good to hear other opinions. I agree, its cheaper to drive and when we get the point where we have lots of time to do the trip we'll definitely drive but this was a 2 week trip and I didn't want long driving days. I quoted the full price without membership as Brittany Ferries have just changed the discount rates depending on the season. Its a good point about the subscription and I'll update the video description to say how much we paid. re your second point, I'm no expert on this , we filled up with the economy diesel and didn't notice any difference but then again we weren't paying much attention to it. Cheers..Andy&Michelle
Quite a boring boat really.January night crossing.....Cherbourge/Portsmouth . On boarding the boat with a car, the lift system requires you to hold a big button continously to open the lift doors.....let go and they close again. Not easy with bags and a dog in tow. Everything closed except one basic restaurant which was ok. Doggy cabin was comfortable. The deck signage is downright dangerous. On a near empty boat we couldn,t find our way down to the car deck. ( no coloured deck signage as on most boats) . A big shame....they have got it so many things wrong with this ship. And I,m a Brittany Ferries fan !
tip 1 do not drink at night if you are driving next day there is a 0 tollerance on drink driving not like uk where it is 35 and as we aint in eed you will get a on the spot fine and yes they can print your penalty points on your licenses as im a trucker who is in spain
I can't say I don't have a drink on the Ferry but definitely only a couple the day before as want all my attention for driving the next day let alone risking having penalty points. As I understand Spain is 0.5 (0.3 commercial) where as uk is 0.8. Great tip though, thanks for raising that point👍 (normally say cheers here but maybe more appropriate to say Regards...Andy&Michelle
cheap fares for motorhomes yes i got 1 a canturian from germany at 17 ,meters long and a mini cooper underneath the motorhome lifts up and a slide out for the car plus i am a hgv driver class 1 own my own bussiness
Agreed, around £1200 would be the limit for us before we chose to drive, I guess if the ship is only half full during peak season they they'll need to rethink, it'll be interesting to see if the price drops and there are last minute deals because they haven't filled it
Agreed, it is expensive especially now the discount has been very much reduced for high season, for us it worked taking our Motorhome as we only had two weeks but given more available time we would have done the drive…Andy&Michelle
Sorry to hear you think that, there's 20 tips in the video description but appreciate viewers come here to see it in the video, but good to hear you enjoyed the drive 😀 Andy & Michelle
I hate the Galicia - the older ships were much nicer. The biggest problem is the terrible fumes in the cabins on deck 8. Doesn't happen on deck 7. Everyone was complaining of eyes watering and breathing difficulties. Crew said don't worry we know about it. Not harmful to your health. Yeah right! I am not asthmatic and yet I was wheezing badly. Outbound crossing was fine on deck 7. Fumes are also very bad up on deck. Much worse than the older ships even though this one is supposed to be good for the environment. No cosy corners to lose yourself in like the old ships. No access to the bow area for viewing either. More dog friendly than the Pont Aven - more like the Cap Finnestere. Good sea keeping - handled rough weather no problem.
Hi, thanks for the comment, your not the first to mention this so we are going to follow up with Brittany Ferries, was it recently you traveled and do you know if it’s still an issue with the fumes? Cheers
@@ExtremeMotorhomingAdventures It was the end of October. Outbound deck 7 was fine. Cabins deck 8 towards the stern seem the worst but also bad on deck.
Hi, this is the response from Brittany Ferries "I'm sorry to read that you experienced issues with fumes. This did occur intermittently depending on the wind direction relative to the direction of travel of the ship. But our technical team has been working on a solution to the problem which has proved successful, so yes, I'm happy to say that the problem has been resolved."

Nice video. Would you drive or sail if you have a small dog? Driving through France atm is not an option. Thanks.
Thanks Bobby, there were a fair number of people with dogs but dogs are limited to a smallish outside area to exercise and the cabin. Some of our friends did the crossing with a dog and did find it a bit restrictive. Hopefully France will be opening in the not too distant future!
@@ExtremeMotorhomingAdventures you are right. Can cross to France from Friday.
@@bobbywong4964 Yes Bobby, the rules have just changed and France is now allowing tourists in 😀
You're back. So am I.
We’ve missed you! Where have you been😀
@@ExtremeMotorhomingAdventures Nowhere.
@@ExtremeMotorhomingAdventures Heartwarming. Thanks.
You got a Bailey bear in the front window????
Not a “Bailey” Bear but our very own “ Barney “ Bear -avid Extreme explorer complete with a Kilt made by one of our Scottish subscribers😀👍
Does the Club Voyage discount cover everything except the drinks? ie the cabin as well.
When was this? Just the month will do.
It was last October, we were lucky with the weather 😎
Does that price of £1200 include return to the UK?
Yes it does but the price can vary quite a lot depending on the time of year, this was in October 2021
Hi, good tips but if I may, I would comment points 8 and 10:
I piloted GALICIA... ❤⛴🛳
Wish we had known, you could had invited us onto the ships bridge! Cheers...Andy&Michelle
£2600 for 4 and 4 bikes.... go forth an multiply as they say
Ouch! it was £1200 for us in October for a Motorhome and Cabins, we already had the membership which took it down to £900
@@ExtremeMotorhomingAdventures ours June but these costs they going loose lots of new an existing customers
Agreed, around £1200 would be the limit for us before we chose to drive, I guess if the ship is only half full during peak season they they'll need to rethink, it'll be interesting to see if the price drops and there are last minute deals because they haven't filled it
Pity about the costs now, myself and my wife could fly to Austin, Texas for less!
Agreed, it is expensive especially now the discount has been very much reduced for high season, for us it worked taking our Motorhome as we only had two weeks but given more available time we would have done the drive…Andy&Michelle
Fly over
Have you seen the cost of Motorhome airfreight!! 🤣
@@ExtremeMotorhomingAdventures flights are cheap and fast
Very poor on content / info (sorry just as it looks to me) but enjoyed the drive.
Cheers
@@ExtremeMotorhomingAdventures
It was the end of October.
Outbound deck 7 was fine. Cabins deck 8 towards the stern seem the worst but also bad on deck.
Hi, this is the response from Brittany Ferries
"I'm sorry to read that you experienced issues with fumes. This did occur intermittently depending on the wind direction relative to the direction of travel of the ship.
But our technical team has been working on a solution to the problem which has proved successful, so yes, I'm happy to say that the problem has been resolved."
All background music is rubbish.
It’s really difficult finding the correct music.. we can spend hours doing it. Sorry you didn’t like it. Michelle and Andy 😊😊
Got to be the worst ship ever. 👎👎👎👎
So, you went on a car ferry. And what?
Bloody boring video.
Sorry it wasn’t for you, but thanks for watching and commenting. Michelle 😃
