  • I have just started a discussion forum at www.elpasotubeamps.com so we can discuss technical issues without text limits - you are invited to join. (I terminated the forum as it was hacked and ended up with over 60,000 pieces of junk) This is where I got my VEE Runtime and it did not say anything about a 30 day limit - I can not guarantee they will not expire but maybe they are worth a try - they all say they are no longer supported by Aligent...

    I had some trouble also with drivers and finally got the ones on the video to work. If I remember correctly, VEE 5 would not load under Win7 - I never tried the ISA or PCI cards. My only experience is with the 82357A - thanks for posting your experience and good luck with your installation.

    Thanks SO much - total head-bang trying to get this set up. Still wasn't entirely straight-forward but finally got it working following your steps (and juggling things a little). Phew!

      +Tom Bugs I am really glad the video helped. It took me a lot of fumbling to get it going. After you get it working it is stable and I have had no problems. I have other videos on the 8903 that might help with other issues. It is a fantastic instrument.

    Thank you for your video, it was a big help in getting my setup to work :-)

      I am pleased to hear it helped.
      I found it a bit challenging to configure and one of the things that bit me the hardest, as I remember, was clicking on "save" after making modifications to the software.

    You can use it to measure 0 dBm at 600 ohms, 0.7746 volts across 600 ohms. SPCL function 19.600. If you haven't discovered it yet, when in remote control mode of your PC, you can press LCL once and put it in local mode to make adjustments on the 8903 panel. It will go back to remote PC mode when you execute the Millett programs.

    One thing I do know is the Agilent site has links to MatLab who will let you download MatLab for an evaluation period. It is big, 1.17 GB, and looks interesting. MatLab communicates throught the Agilent runtime programs to the GPIB instruments. That is the only trial period software I know of so far - I hope the VEE runtime does not expire.

    Haven't tried yet that function. I mostly work on preamps & studio gear, but as soon as I have to put hands on some power amplifier I will try that for sure!
    I was asking the same question to you...today I just tried quickly the Freq response and THD+N vs Freq. And It seems like in the THD+N vs Freq the reference level is stuck @ 0.1Volts, regardless what you set on the Gen Level.

    The auto identify operation sends an "IDN?" query to the instrument. This is a GPIB command asking for the instrument to return an identification string to the requesting controller. Your 8903A is an older unit which does not have more modern IEEE488 style commands, therefore an error is returned when the IDN? is executed. Check out the 8903A's list of GPIB commands starting on page 3-33 of the operator's manual. Enjoy the instrument!

    Excellent --- another vintage 8903 saved from the scrap yard. Have you used it to display power directly yet? I like that feature almost as much as the scanning - SPCL function 19.xxx (19.0 defaults to 8 ohms or .xxx specifies impedance). I have a question for you - after it asks, "Ref level OK?" I can not vary the output with "Gen Level" when running THD plots - the level changes properly when running "Power_v2".

  • @ElPasoTubeAmps
    @ElPasoTubeAmps  11 лет назад

    I can't get "Gen Level" to do anything. However, I can take the 8903 offline by pressing LCL once then set the voltage manually to whatever i want and then hit "Yes" when it asks, "Is level correct"? It will keep that level until I close the program and restart it where I have to manually set output level again. After pressing LCL once and setting the voltage, it will automatically go back to PC control when you hit "Yes".

    @BoredQwerty 11 лет назад

    I tried that before, but I don't remember if then the whole process will be performed with the new Gen Level. I'm not at home until next week, I'll make some other experiments when I come back

    I don't see "installed drivers" anywhere - I only have the option "update drivers" Also, I do not have "8903B" anywhere in my configuration - I have named it "Audio Analyzer" as Pete's notes suggest - hope this helps. I also have "Auto-identify this instrument" not checked.

  • @ElPasoTubeAmps
    @ElPasoTubeAmps  11 лет назад

    Yes, that is the question - I don't know the answer either - my output voltage is set at 1 volt and I cannot vary it.

    I was not aware of that - so that means it will quit working in 30 days - unless I pruchase it?

    I have been struggling to get mine working. The VEE runtime program also expires in 28 days too! Turned off the auto identifier because this sends a interrogation to 8903 asking it for its Id, something the 8903 does not understand.
    Also my windows on the laptop are not just the chart but looks like it's running inside another program.
    No doubt I will get there. I wonder how much the VEE software costs!

      @ElPasoTubeAmps  8 лет назад

      Simon - making this thing work is a test of your perseverance and will to live. It doesn't cost any money. Any money you might spend is a waste. It is all free. This insanity between GPIB, HPIB IEEE488, VEE and on and on is meant to drive you crazy. That is why I posted all the videos I did on the HP 8903. This software was written back in the 1980's when geeks couldn't figure out how to tie their own shoes but they wrote this stuff. Between Pete's site and my videos and your determination, you will make it work. Afterwards, you will wonder how you did it and you will never want to have to do it again... :-)
      P.S. the 8903 cannot self identify. You have to assign the address and them "save it". Watch my videos and read all Pete has to say about it. Pete has programs updated as late as 2015 that allow you to adjust parameters in the program.

    What about drivers for 8903B on connection expert? If you go on "installed drivers" for 8903B, what do you have?
    I can't find a way to install/download drivers for my 8903B, even if it's fully recognised by connection expert...
    Having no drivers, the Millet's software says that I cannot open the application

    Already solved: I putted "AUDIO ANALYZER" instead of "Audio Analyzer". Now it works! Really strange issue...

    I can't find a free version of VEE Pro 9.3. The Pro Archive goes up to 8.5 and stops. The 9.32 area of the site says call for pricing

      I can send commands to the 8903B but Pete's software won't run. I emailed him. Hopefully he'll have an idea.

      Email me directly with your address at rdavidbeard@gmail.com and I will see what I can find around here and put on CD for you and mail it to you. I remember seeing some messages about software expiring, etc. but I have never had an issue. It's been long enough that I can't remember all the details of how everything in the software is associated. . I would have to watch my own videos to install it again and make it work...

      I assume you have watched this video ruclips.net/video/8GD-FU27wpk/видео.html
      I think this the best one, and maybe only one, that goes into the detail of software configuration. I can't remember but you may have to associate the icons for Pete's programs manually by right-clicking on them and associate them with the runtime program. I am sure you'll figure it out. Use Pete's latest programs on his website as he has some fixes that allow you to adjust the drive voltage from the PC screen whereas the older programs he had posted did not allow this.

      I think this is the site I got my software. agilent-vee-pro-runtime.software.informer.com/9.3/

      That one eventually works it's way back to the Keysight website. No file to download there. I have 8.3 (I think) from the archive but that gave me the same popup.

    Maybe a bug of the software?
    If that, I would like to take a look at the source code. Don't know if Millet would like to release it
