The "Palace Park", one of the Norwegian capital’s first and largest parks, surrounds the "Royal Palace" on all sides and features grassy areas as well as old, majestic trees. It is 22 hectares (54 acres). The "Palace Park" was developed simultaneously with the construction of the new "Royal Palace", and is based on the ideal model of nature that prevailed in European horticulture in the mid-1800s. The park was built during the 1840s and was designed by "Hans Ditlev Franciscus Linstow", who was the main architect of the palace. 2000 trees were planted in 1848, but since then the park has been redeveloped several times, becoming simpler with larger but fewer paths and fewer creeks.
