The new materials are dropped by defeating mobs. With basic passive mobs like chickens dropping the lowest tier, boss mobs droppping the highest tier, and mobs in between dropping all the others. There is a guidebook and signs in the map telling you which mobs drop which materials and how strong they are compared to the others!
