Yes, I was surprised at your total cost. I lived in Saranda for 4 months in 21/22 and 8 months in 20/21. Costs must have skyrocketed! My rent was 300 USD a month. Food 300 to 400 and a rental car was about the same (11.00/day) My apartment was not a luxury accommodation but very functional. A month with 2 trips out of town was about 1,400 USD (cheaper the first year) and I had lots of fun!
We really enjoy your videos and information. My wife and I are doing a similar retirement. We like doing 3 month stays using AIRBNBs. Next Summer we are doing Europe, now we are in Sayulita, Mexico, next will be Panama, then Thailand. You two are really setting a great example for all of us traveler's! Keep up the great videos! Thank you for sharing your adventures!
Thanks so much! It sounds like you have some amazing adventures ahead. 3 months in each Airbnb sounds like a great pace...you really get a chance to immerse in the local culture. 😊
@@OurFreedomYears Yes, and 3 month intervals seems to be the right period of time for us. We can get a better feel for the community, participate in volunteer activities (turtle and wildlife rehabilitation) and, not be so rushed to get to the airport! However, moving to a different city each month is also a great idea. Especially if the AIRBNB host is challenging! Again, keep up the cool videos!
Such a great experience for a relatively cheap cost! The apartment alone was worth that! Stay safe ladies, and as always, thank you for bringing us along.
Great video, ladies! I love your approach to slow travel: finding a good nest, planning day trips, eating at home and out, all while seeking value. I want to use that as a blueprint for when we travel within a year.
Fantastic video. This is the first time we have come across your channel. One of our subscribers suggested it as we were wondering where we would go once we leave Spain in February. You may have just inspired us to make the journey to Sarande.
This was a great recap! I admit to being a bit jealous of that view from your AirBnB, but my favorite part was the tour of Gyrokaster. I love those old towns!
Great video......always enjoy seeing the puppies. Thanks for the detail on monthly spending.....very affordable compared to here in Mid-west US. Safe travels to your next country!
hey guys, came across your channel by accident and think its really good. my wife and i live in crete and love to travel around in a very similar fashion to yourselves. very informative and interesting vids, good luck and enjoy. love from crete greece
Welcome to our channel - so great that you found us! We had a wonderful time traveling through Crete a few years ago. Such a beautiful place to call home!
Thanks, we're really enjoying your posts and hope to be following I your footsteps next year! Can't help but notice the sudden plethora of videos featuring Albania that have popped up recently o RUclips. This has me wondering if maybe influencers were recruited or invited to visit Albania? Either way, thanks for all your efforts!
If only we were invited! 🤣 In truth, I think Albania has been one of the few countries to stay open to all visitors during the pandemic. Glad you're enjoying the videos and good luck with your big plans for next year!
Hi Gals, just stumbled into your channel in the last few days and loving it. My wife and I retired just as the pandemic hit. A little later than you as we are both in our early 60's. Our original plan was to start traveling right away but..... Your description of slow and active travel really appeals to us. And many of the eastern European destinations are exactly what we have been looking for. We think our first venture will be Portugal and walking the Portuguese Camino in April/May. Here's to crossing paths!
Walking the Camino -- we're envious! It's one of the big hikes on our bucket list. I hear the Portuguese walk is beautiful. Hopefully the international situation will settle down and you'll be able to get your adventure started!
In Montreal in the supermarket near my place you can also pick a fish and they will cook it for you. Most employees there are from Maghreb so I am not sure whether it's a Montreal thing or a Mediterranean thing.
Hi! Love you guys! Just wanted to suggest that you pop down to the Canary Islands from Spain where there is year round sun and a low cost of living! I’ve been loving here for 26 years getting ready for my nomad travel life in a few years and it is an amazing place to live with great hiking, diving and food
I was on Gran Canaria in 2019 (second last trip before Covid) and I couldnt agree with you more. I cannot wait to live there in the winter (I am from Canada) when my FIRE years are upon me in a few years. Thanks for a post that underscores what I found out while there! Do you have a preferred island or islands?
Such a great idea -- we've been hearing wonderful things about the Canaries! So incredible that you've lived there for 26 years. If not during this trip to Spain, then certainly we'll be heading there in the future.
Bargain in comparison to the cost of living in Australia...a 2 bedroom unit in the Australian Outback is $400 AUS per week! Thank you for the vlog and the update information. All the best.
@@OurFreedomYears you ladies are our "go to" channel because your content is so interesting, honest and always evolving, so glad we found you....three cheers for Spain 🇪🇸
It's all relative. The cost of living in Australia is high because the wage and standard of living are so high. The amount of money you have left at the end of each month is still the same, just directed in local currency. Most Albanians wages are less than $400 USD per month. A university educated professional would earn under $8000 EURO's per year. THey live quite well there and are very happy.
regarding the car, you spent 3 months total in Albania... did you rent a car for the entire 3 months or just for the month in the Sarande area? If so how did you get between cities and how is the transportation in Tirana itself?
Great question. We had the car for just over a month. We picked it up at the end of our time in Tirana (definitely didn't need a car there!) and then made our way through Albania down to Sarande. We dropped it off in Tirana when we left the country. Definitely we felt it was helpful for seeing southern Albania, although it's possible to get around by bus.
Primarily just the young people speak English. The older generation will sometimes speak Italian. That said, we always found a way to communicate wherever we went.
And that's a wrap on the Albanian Riviera! Did our total spend surprise you?

The weather has been sunny and mild but the sun does go down quite early in the winter, around 4:30pm.
I am sure that is quite a bit less expensive than if you lived in the United States. And you get the experience a culture and place.
