  • I have this photography problem every summer, I just struggle to make decisions when it comes to where and when to take photos. If it's not the uninspiring weather, then it's the fact that everywhere is busy and over-run with tourists (especially here in North Wales). This leads to me feeling that photography is a bit pointless but in this video I vouched to change that mindset and share some tips to help you make the most of your photography this summer.

      Wow, thanks so much Stewart, that really means a lot! I'm dedicating so much time to this channel this year and i'm really enjoying sharing my photography in this way so it's really great to hear that you're enjoying what i'm making! Really appreciate your support! 🙏🏻
      Absolutely, i'd love to do a video on my editing process. I don't typically have just one process, my editing does change depending on the photo but there are some key principles and processes that remain constant that I could definitely share. Thanks for the suggestion 🙏🏻

    The photos are a great record of your day. That for me is all that matters and all the better for it as I've found a lack of planning never fails to surprise, whereas overly planned trips set expectations and invariably disappoint somewhere along the way 👍 The winner is our photography

      Thanks Andy, really appreciate the kind words and it's great to hear your perspective on this topic! There is something about the spontaneity and unpredictability of not overly planning shoots that always puts a smile on my face. I arguably enjoy the feeling of being completely surprised by a photo I had no intention of taking more than the photos that have been meticulously planned. It's reminiscent of that feeling of discovering something new for the first time and I think that's why we need to allow ourselves opportunities to just go with the flow and just get out there! 👌🏻

    I struggled with this in the past and now I force myself to do what I know I should do. It includes scouting locations, best light times, and even in the moment u -turns , pulling to the side of the highway.. I refuse to let anything get away now. I still have that voice saying... " Meh, do it tomorrow or on the way back". I just argue it and go through with what I saw.. Its work but its better than regret, frustration and feeling like a slave to the clock. Great video and thanks for the topic.

      That's exactly what i'm trying to do more of! You're totally doing the right thing and the discipline required to adopt that mindset isn't easy so respect to you man! 👌🏻 I think that approach ensures you'll avoid regret because at least you're always following your instinct and your interest! Thanks for watching and sharing your experience buddy! 🙏🏻

    Great video Chris. You're totally right, it's so easy to get caught up with the voices in your head and deter yourself from going out. It's always worth it though, you might not get 20 portfolio shots but you might just learn something about your own process.

      Thanks for watching and for sharing your thought Jamie, really appreciate you taking the time! That's 100% true, and I think that opportunity to practice the process and explore a new location is arguably more valuable in the long run than a few decent photos! 👌🏻

    I struggle to shoot in the summer (Texas) but it's also 42 C (107 F) for a high today. I know that's not a reason either but even in the morning it's already 24 to 27 C. Let's just say I'm really looking forward to Autumn.

    Relatable theme, Chris. There are good and bad photos to be had everywhere, anytime; takes practice and discerning eye to pick out the gems. Of course, extreme climes discourage venturing out; but then there’s tabletop/macro to enjoy indoors.
    Going out on “empty” can be refreshing and rewarding, IMO, because you don’t know what compositions await (as is, or after editing). I know some folks who get so “photo antsy” they take random pics of their surrounds while sitting on a couch, just to be taking pics/exercising their cams.
    Suggestion: for non-UK viewers, how about briefly showing a map of the venues you reference?
    Pic at 4min too distant to pick out “dog in sea” or family.
    Old joke: I used to be indecisive, but now I’m not so sure😊.
    Careful about those voices in your head, Chris.😊 Cheers!

      That mindset of 'there are good and bad photos to be had everywhere' is a valuable one for photographers to remember. I enjoy the challenge and the opportunity to work hard for good photos.
      Absolutely, I hadn't considered that but i'll be sure to include some maps and location info moving forward - it's great to know that would be of interest! Thanks for the suggestion buddy!
      That photo definitely doesn't translate as well on a smaller screen but it was fun zooming in and noticing those smaller aspects of the frame on my bigger desktop! 😄
      I'll try and keep those voices at bay! haha!
      Thanks for watching Paul, hope you have a great week!

    During summer it’s quite challenging to photograph here in Portugal , harsh light and heat combined with extra people running around. I choose early morning to go out , and has you said : better going out then staying home .
    Cheers

    Great images, Chris! I have the exact same thoughts as you, I'm so hesitant at times, and overthink locations and where I want to go. I need to get better at just leaving the house spontaneously haha!

      Thanks so much Chris, really appreciate you taking the time to check out the video and leave a comment! It's reassuring knowing i'm not the only one! This little photo walk was a good reset for me, really helped me realise that there are always photos to be had, you just have to adapt to the situation your presented with. I think if i'd been really rigid in what I was hoping to shoot the outcome would have been very different!

    Yep 100% relatable unfortunately. I've spent far too much time flip-flopping between locations and considering tide times, weather forecasts etc. but I've learned that on days like that, I just have to get out anyway. Sometimes it works out and I get some images I like and sometimes it doesn't, but I've never ever regretted going out afterwards. I think the knack is to go without expectations of getting that sought after portfolio shot. I know it's easier said than done but maybe accepting it is the first step to reducing the indecision... 😊

    • @chrisharveyphotography
      @chrisharveyphotography  17 дней назад +2

      Andrea, you've hit the nail on the head I think! That idea of never regretting going out is definitely something i've realised in my own photography lately. Even if I haven't had the most productive shoot i've always felt gratitude for the opportunity to spend some time in the outdoors, exploring a new place or getting better acquainted with a familiar location. It's not always about the photography and I think if we remember that then we can't possibly feel regret. Thanks for sharing your experience, it's really refreshing 🙏🏻

    Urgh summer holidays is always a tough one mate! I don’t know if this helps at all, but a couple of years ago I decided the only thing I was going to check was tide times (and obviously that would only be if the tide effected my walking route or land crossing in anyway) - now I just pick a spot and a time and go 😂 and to be honest it’s resulted in more and better photos than any of the years where I planned everything.
    Mind you I do have days where I drive a long way and don’t even take one photo but as you said, better than sitting inside haha!

    • @chrisharveyphotography
      @chrisharveyphotography  21 день назад +1

      Thanks for watching bud! You know what, funnily enough the tide times were something I did check for this location (not for safety reasons, just because I wanted to include the sea in some of the photos) and I feel like that definitely helped some of the photos!
      It happens to us all doesn't it mate, I think removing photography as the primary objective and just using it as an opportunity to explore and get those steps in also really takes the pressure off! That is something I find difficult though when I'm having to plan videos etc because the stakes are higher! I'm sure it's similar for you as well 😊

    • @DISTANTMEDIA
      @DISTANTMEDIA 21 день назад

      @@chrisharveyphotography yeah for sure mate, has a few occasions where entire videos have had to be re done due to the location ruining it, or weather or what have you. But I suppose that’s what we sign up for! No 2 days are the same 🤣

      When time is precious and limited I definitely find this tendency becomes even more difficult, I guess because we put more pressure on ourselves to make the time count. It's something I struggle with too because although I do photography professionally, so little of that time is spent actually going out and doing photography 😂
