Japanese animation in general is top class but it’d be a shame to underestimate the genius of Makoto Shinkai as simply just being Japanese. You’d be hard pressed to find anybody that comes close, where Miyazaki creates a realistic world though a fantastical lense Makoto takes the real world and animated it, from the way light reflects off trees to how drops of rain fall into puddles you can tell he walks around for endless hours just studying the way everything in his environment looks and moves to properly animate it
