When my cat first saw herself in a mirror (on a dressing table) she must have assumed it was a window. She immediately rushed round the back (she hated strange cats - she was tiny but feisty) and stopped short. A quick look round the front at the reflection again and she just ambled away - presumably realising it was her reflection. She was quite smart.
Have you seen "Florida Man Experiencing a Mirror for the 1st Time"? Standing his ground, the guy walks past it, pulls out his handgun and shoots the mirror.
My kittens tried to find the "playmate" - Behind mirror. :D Learned (as adults) to totally ignore this. On the other hand, Cats do seem to use mirrors to see *other* things? Cats are EVER Interesting! :P
I once had two cats in the same time period. One would hear animals on the TV and watch and watch, go up, look over the screen, look behind it, hilarious. And she would play in mirrors. The other cat, nada. Completely unaware.
Flash backs to Duck Soup! Pretty much all the moggies I have had a similar response at first sight of themselves in a mirror as kittens…. But soon learn that the supposed interloper is actually themselves and don’t respond to cutely. Spoilsports.😂
Brings back happy memories of my cat Hubert Herbert Sherbert who as a kitten used to do this sort of thing against the glass of the patio doors. Thanks.
The kitten's body language tells the tale: Ears flattened back. "Who is this strange kitten?" Tail waving in a wave motion from side to side: Kitten does not know what this threat is, but knows that it is a threat. The pawing at the edge of the mirror seems to be an acknowledgement that this strange kitten might want to fight it, and mirrors it's every move. Short story: The kitten doesn't know that it's looking at it's own reflection, and therefore considers this strange kitten a danger to itself.
It's funny, but I've never had a cat that paid any attention to their reflection in a mirror, or to anything on a screen. It's not like they weren't smart - 2 of them were Siamese.
One of my cats not only would watch (very attentively ) RUclips Cat tv for long time, but he would actually demand it by touching me. I ended up setting up a small 19 inch tv with Amazon fire stick in the basement for him 😂. My other cat never cared for it.

I’ve heard, and this is just my assumption and speculation, that Tuxedo cats are very intelligent and of superior alertness. Decades ago I had a cat whom I renamed PF, also a Tuxedo. I named it so because I noticed that every time I played Pink Floyd’s music he would come and sit next to my boombox (yes, I’m that old, this was late 70s, early 80s). As soon as I changed the music he would stand and leave. The feline absolutely adored Pink Floyd. 😂

What on earth? The image in the mirror is not quite in the same rhythm as the cat on the right front. It seems to be somehow slower than a real cat? Space-time?
Although I feel what you're saying a little bit. I think our peripheral vision and our central vision maybe don't sync up perfectly so if you focus on the real cat or the mirror cat you get a sense that the other cat doesn't match. But if you focus on a point in between them then everything feels (at least to me) perfectly in sync.
