There is a difference between the courses that also do the testing in house, as opposed to those who just do a coarse, and require taking the test at a coast guard facility. I dont think its possible based upon my own experience, that a one week coarse is adequate. The plotting part alone is very time consuming at least for most people. And its also the reason for most failures. The test is broken down into three sections. If you fail one of the three, you only need to retake the one section you failed. Also, by taking a coarse, then doing additional prepping on your own prior to sitting for the test at a Coast Guard facility, you can opt to go for a masters license initially. And you will have your certificate before you leave the facility upon passing. Whereas with the courses that include the testing, as a rule it requires another course in order to obtain a masters license.
Thanks for posting, I've been looking for some advise on the OUPV license and find a lot of stuff related to the master 100 ton exams . I ordered my course material ( OUPV SIX PACK ) and would take any advise going forward. thanks .

After 5 years is it a quick continue education course/test to renew?
I get confused about sea time. Can recreational hours on my boat count or do I need a job on the water to count as sea time. ?
Thanks
Yes! Your sea time is time on the water behind the wheel of your vessel. Thanks for watching

Great video, do you plan on upgrading to master captain's license?
I grew up mating on my fathers boat in the 1980’s and 1990’s , the log was destroyed in a fire in 1999 . How can I use that time at sea ?
It would need to be signed off on by the person with you for all those hours
