I had a poster on the wall of this car as a boy... it was like a 308 Magnum PI car but with huge muscles, front fog lights, sexy back end with the gearbox visible, vent strakes, and massive power. Screw the F40: this was the best looking 1980s Ferrari. And it is so damned rare as well

While the 288 GTO is somewhat reminiscent of the 308 GTB, the fact that they reengineered it to be longitudinal, added the turbo, and the hints of the 250 GTO. To my eyes, the additional length gives it the perfect proportions. It is beautiful in the best Pininfarina fashion, far eclipsing the F40, F50, F60, Enzo, and LaFerrari in my opinion.

Agreed. Growing up as a kid I always loved the F40 (even though my neighbor had a Countach 5000s which he took me for rides in, loved that car also.)
As I’ve gotten older however (in my 40’s now) the 250 GTO and Miura look better than the Countach and F40 to me 👍🏻

Hands down my favourite Ferrari of all and this one is about as beautiful as they get! - And although I am firmly middle aged, I have never even seen one in the flesh :-(
I always thought that the Magnum PI era of the 308 was a keystone chapter of Ferrari; every subsequent model since has borrowed a little from the 308 and despite the spaceship flavour of the design language of todays models, I bet you can still see something of the 308 in them. The 288 was obviously a 308 on steroids, augmented with supercar performance; a legend and an absolutely gorgeous piece of automotive art.

I got lost somewhere in Nyack and found myself in the parking lot of a garage repair shop. I asked a guy if he would give me directions to Grossman's and he said if could wait a minute, he was headed that way. Grateful as hell I chatted with him. He got into a Gold colored Miura SV and we set off. By the time we got there 5/6 minutes? I was in love but not with the Maser. The understanding Joe Namnoun said.."you're a little mixed up now" take a drive and just come back Monday. I drove down the road to WW of C and BINGO ! Right there in their lot was a Agrento and Crema Daytona Spyder......By this time i had broken up with the Miura and my new love of the Ferrari! Thank you for the memory John. Tony Davis

greetings from Germany to you please - great video and thank you so much for your opinion to this GTO (which is in astronominal good shape!). You said the car tells a lot about the owner. For example you explained it's a gentleman's car. We would like to know what does John Temerian then think about the F512M? What is your opinion in your eyes to the final version of the Testarossa please?
Best regards to you from Germany and wish you and your family a nice weekend,
    Sarah & Timo

We think they are stunning cars, that said many people dont like the way they look. A 512TR is the perfect in-between.. More refined than the Testarossa, but without the polarizing headlights and taillights.

This car is reminiscent of the 308 which the Magnum PI series popularized, but of course the 288 GTO was worlds worlds above the other. I'm envious that you're driving that car pan is great

The car I lust after most in the dream garage. I remember reading the article on Car Magazine when they collected a car from the factory and drove it back to the UK with the new owner. It’s such a perfect shape.

I still have that magazine. The article followed Ron Stratton’s drive back from Maranello after collecting his GTO. I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of him driving it through Wilmslow not long after the magazine was published, I’ll never forget that sight of the gearbox casing visible from the rear, must be 35 years ago now.

@@missflatsix9929 did it not also have photo of a priest looking at it and a crowd of school children round it?
Cheeky question but could you photograph it so I could read it again?

The 288 was always special in my eyes…it was clearly much much more than a 308….just visually it was clear…but I had no idea what lurked under that Vented hood…I did have a 1/18th scale model of the 288 and the F40….all you had to do was look at the engines and see they are almost identical

Years ago, back when this car was trading under 500k, i used to think to myself that people were blind and mostly driven by hype and trends. This has always been to me the most beautiful Ferrari ever and personifies the 80s better than any other super car. Even the fact that it had been made as a race car for the legendary group B should have made this car an permanent classic. I am low key kind of mad that they are not valued as they should.
