I know this! And yes, if anyone is wondering why, at 43:08 the end of Head Down, he scrapes the mic all over his guitar, knocks it over, then ruins the guitar by letting it slam on the ground after he throws it (probably bending it a little), it's because he was Uber pissed. The mic kept feeding back. And or guitar. Something was making the mic shriek a few times during the performance and he was clearly like get this fucking shit out of here, new guitar and mic.
Back when the worlds biggest rock stars wore jeans and T-shirts, day in, day out, because they were more focused on creating mind-bending, world beating rock music, than what they looked like when they were doing it. Those were the days.
I love Soundgarden but I enjoy the uniqueness of every era of Rock music and I don't think it's right to put down bands that really cared about live performance. I think bombast and excess is rock and roll and now every genre of music has ripped that off and rock is failing at trying to be something else. A lot of those bands that had crazy lives shows cared about the music as well. Chris didn't really need that because he looked like a million bucks. All if the big 90's "grunge" bands had perfect frontmen. Unless you have the talent of Chris Cornell or Layne Staley you should think big.
You're silly if you think aesthetic wasn't a major factor for marketing in the 90s alternative rock scene. The genre saw all types of fashion, idolising messy clothing, loose shirts, dark shirts, greasy hair and hipster sunglasses. The fashion represented depression, rebellion and angst. Fashion was important, especially amongst bands like soundgarden and Alice In Chains.
Chris seems pissed on this show. I love Matt's playing, he's amazing. Ben is crazy good, flopping around the bass and dancing like a madman. Kim is just poised as always and never missing a beat. Chris gave an amazing vocal performance, but anyone else noticed how good his guitar playing is? He could have been a lead player. Hell of a frontman.
I've never understood that song on the album before. Too light sound with such kind of LSD-trip. But at the live version is so powerful and creative. I'm just impressed.
It sounds like the acoustics in this venue were pretty excellent. Matt's drums really thunder. I really believe this was peak Soundgarden - this European tour of 1995. Chris' voice sounds much better than it did the previous year. The following year's tour featured a little too much DOTU for my liking. Here they were playing their best material as well as they ever would.
@@joandrumz3176 That's a damn shame, man. These German shows were ausgezeichnet. I believe that this was their peak, as well. The sound is so cohesive, Cornell's range is still off the charts, and the tone/depth of his voice was probably never better than this stretch of performances. I think DOTU is actually my favorite album by them, maybe SU, but I still agree regarding materials played here...some 'rarer' SU stuff. And a Doors cover that is perfect?
Yeah, you have to wonder if he had any regrets about basically screaming half the songs on Superunknown. Doing it in a comfortable recording studio when you’re getting plenty of sleep is one thing. Doing it 3-4 nights a week for months at a time across the whole planet, is another.
Incredible concert by the greatest band of the 90s but boy did they bite it on Black Hole Sun. When they tear into Jesus Christ Pose (a killer rendition) you feel Matt roaring to redeem the band. Even vintage Soundgarden were mortals, I guess!
I snagged this, and ran it through Audacity, tried to reduce the brick-walling, and draw out Cornell. Sounds good. What a performance, raw and hot as hell. I didn't squelch it, it still is just as ferocious. First, I normalized, reducing everything's peak to -4db. Then, I did run it through an exciter plugin, filling out what I had attenuated previously. Then, an EQ adjustment to keep the punch and also clean the highs. This may be the best set I've ever heard. If not, it's top 5.
I see what youre saying... I've made it a point to listen to basically every live soundgarden show, and yeah, Matt did lift him out of that... Chris is very receptive and sometimes he needs that... I also see how he lifted ben up with his playing, and that in turn lifted Chris up more....
Ladies and gentlemen, the greatest rock band of the 1990's in their goddamn PRIME. You don't even need timestamps, just cancel that crappy movie you were gonna go to, sit back, and take it all in!
They were great. The real crossover of the Beatles and Black Sabbath. So sad they got destroyed by the bussiness (according to Cornell) during This time
This great video, Thanks! -I saw them in Helsinki, Finland in august,1995. They were with large number of opening acts, such as Blind Melon, Kyuss, White Zombie etc.. I dont know it they did these kinds of "mega-shows" all over Europe. Also Oberhausen, Germany?
@@luridink LOL I know this isn't any help but I do know that the shirt that Chris wears is a Young Gods TV Sky tour shirt, but Kim also wore the same one around this era.

This is gold. I wish they’d release these shows from the Superunknown era. RIP- CC

Kims playing is amazing here. His vibrato is on point. That tone too..All fire breathing Mesa Rectos.
This live version of 4th of July is the music equivalent of staring straight into the abyss

Wow! Overjoyed I found this. Absolutely blown away. So glad someone recorded and captured this magic.
This version of black hole sun is incredible. Instrumentals really shine through, dark and heavy. And I love Chris’s voice
15:15 the drums on the album recording sound HUGE, it's so funny to see Matt casually banging the drums here like that LOL

that drawing flies version was very punk rock.
