Deeply pleased you are competent and professional in both your riding skills and the fact that you are not referring to lanes as fast and slow...possibly the most irritating nonsense which I have actually heard motorcycle traffic officers use...agghhhhh. When asked what the speed in slow lane is compared to the fast lane...blank looks. Thank you for a great instructional piece of film as a biker more of this is required.

Thank you for an object lesson in defensive riding. I wish someone would sit all new drivers down to watch this before they are released onto the motorway after passing car and bike tests.

Excellent and informative video. Aussie drivers could learn a lot from this ! Especially lane discipline !

    Make a note people....
Look at vehicle speed of traffic on the motorway as you come down the slip road and join the motorway at the appropriate speed. Don't join at 45mph and then try to speed up to 70!!! Use the sliproad to build your speed up to match the other traffic!
Quote of the day..."I'm gonna drift over to lane one. There's no need to be in lane two cos there's nothin in it and there's nothin in lane one". I'm glad someone on the m6 knows how to use motorway lanes correctly!

Very good, but i recommend staying in lane 1 for upto 2 mins once joining motorway to get used to traffic flow and each lane change is best done one at a time not 2.also i would not consider changing to lane 2 to overtake if ive past the half mile marker to my exit.but a very good video

Great forward thinking commentary Nigel. It shows that traffic does use lanes as speed levels alter. This doesn't occur downunder NZ. I find line one the fastest and most traffic free, truck in #2 and the hopefulls in#3 and 60mph fast enough for our capabilities. There is no law saying you must pull left if you are not passing. Bike generally go in the lanes they feel safest at the time. I prefer the best braking distantance and best average speed.

I agree with the comments about changing lanes one at a time you should not go from lane one to three in one move bike or car....

its really different to how we are taught here in europe, every lane the mirrors must be looked at, i guess that the higher speeds and people who drive fast requires more observation. I`m happier doing my mirror checks every lane change and checking my blind spot, has saved me quite a few times ! (right mirror, left mirror, right shoulder, indicate, right mirror, saftey, move :) seems alot but as soon as its learnt its good, esp on the autobahn.

I can see why you'd want to teach lane changing and getting the point across of mirrors and technique etc, but as a regular user of motorways from Leeds to Manchester I'd only stay in lane 3 at all times, purely cos of the HGV's using lane 2 to pass slower HGV's in lane 1, and involves too much activity, anyone agree ?
    Great video by the way

some years ago but, why did you not chose the right lane coming off the motorway to turn left, the road markings indicate you can. then you would have got around the tanker.

Sorry can not remember only filmed 15 years ago. If I can answer perhaps not done because on lane markings and pinchng its breaking distance

@alleywatson this is like the car drivers who think of lane 3 as the fast lane IT IS NOT lane one is the lane to use lanes 2 and 3 are for overtaking only not to stay in....

@devonmale69 BUT ON TODAYS ROADS PEOPLE DONT BOTHER DO THEY, WHICH IS WHY LANE 3 IS BY FAR THE SAFEST FOR A BIKER IF ITS BUSY
