Hey Karen, happy 2024! So happy to see you covering Kolchak! This is one I was late to the party to find but I really enjoyed it!. Settling in to watch your vid now. But to answer your Q, my earliest horror was pretty much tv broadcasts of Halloween, Exorcist and Friday the 13th. There were also movies like Terminator and Aliens which are not all horror but they had scary parts which grabbed me & kept me hooked. Anyway back to the vid! 😁

@@spiritsnscreams Good question! I think my parents were TZ fans and liked many of the classic tv shows, so that would be one show I'd just catch when I was younger. I’ve actually never heard of this show. Definitely have to check it out. Darren McGavin was an amazing actor. Sounds awesome for sure.
I can absolutely pin point the movie/experience that turned me into an obsessive horror fan!
My brother took me to the movies to see Evil Dead 2 in 1987. I was 5 years old! 😂😂😂 Same age you were when you watched Kolchak. 🤔😃🤘🏻
The experience was insane for me. I was so scared but there were these funny moments that would make my brother laugh, so it would break some of the tension for me.
I was head over heels in love with this film! I remember every moment watching that movie. It blew me away and ultimately lead me down an endless path of loving Horror that I’m still on to this day.
Can’t thank my brother enough for that experience. Even though I was way too young to see that. 😂 Just one of the many bonding experiences we had.

Hello, I agree with you completely. I absolutely loved The Night Stalker. I was 12 in 1972 when it came out. I also got my start in horror movies with my dad. When I was about 7 or 8 he showed me The Cyclops 1957. And it scared the entire shit out of me. He also showed me the original Frankenstein 1931, which also terrified me. But that was just the beginning. I lost my dad in 1972 when I only 12. But by then I knew I loved Horror films. But then in 1973 when I saw The Exorcist, I had never been more terrified in my life. I was traumitized by that movie for years to come. Which brings me to today at 63 and nothing scares me anymore, as far as horror films go. However, if you really liked The Night Stalker, I have a recommdation for you. Check out The Norlis Tape 1973, if you haven't seen it already. It's very similar to The Original Nightstalker.

Your story reminds me a lot of my experience with the original TV movie, although I didn't see the original broadcast (I was 5 at the time too,but my parents wouldn't let me stay up to see it),but I got to see ABC's first rerun of it in late '73 or so,where they ran it on a double feature with SCREAM OF THE WOLF,and it burst my 6 year old brain to bits,so when the series was announced a few months later,I was drooling!I didn't get to see the second Kolchak movie,THE NIGHT STRANGLER until a few months after the series was cancelled.
As for what attracted me first to horror,it was a bunch of things.Seeing ads for DARK SHADOWS,as well as seeing the only episode that aired in Buffalo which had a werewolf attacking someone, scared the hell out of me.Most of my early childhood horror was the old American International stuff like Zontar and The Eye Creatures, which I loved and still have a place in my heart for,as crap as they were (all the classic stuff only played the late show at the time,so it was a no go). My older brother usual bought monster magazines and books,so I got to pore over the pics of vampires and werewolves!

A lot of what you talk about can be credited to the absolute genius of the late, great Dan Curtis. As for what got me into horror was a combination of things. Night Stalker was certainly one, but also Night Gallery and also watching old school horror movies with my mom growing up on Chiler Theater. I always loved scary movies with the devil as a theme. Slasher movies however always left me cold. It got way too overdone. It wasn't scary watching Friday the 13th part 25 or Nightmare on Elm Street part 47. Yawn enducing to me.

You know back in the day we watched the first Friday the 13th then the second and couldn’t understand why they were making so many more films in the franchise. I get people now diving back into them there’s been enough time for it to be cool and unique but for me I never would have guessed these franchises would have been so popular.
