Clear instruction. I particularly appreciated how you provided the basic guiding premise before going into the step by step. Great for global concept learners!
Thanks for your appreciative comments. It's always a challenge to present all the needed info without making the video too long. I'm pleased to hear that I struck the right balance. Enjoy the lacing!
+Dennis Harris It's deceptive in that it *looks* simple but the underlying path is a little more complex. I'm glad you followed the instructions - enjoy the finished result.
You're welcome. I'm pleased that you felt that my instructions were "straight to the point". That's exactly how I was hoping they would be! Nice to know that it is appreciated.
This method made breaking in my Solovair's so much more comfortable. The European style puts a bunch of pressure on the top of my foot that made them practically unbearable, this simple change made them feel like clouds. Thank you shoe lace wizard!
THANK YOU! My shoe had 7 pairs of eyelets and I was totally convinced I had forgotten how to tie a straight bar properly, but the part at 4:20 was a big relief that it wasn't me! I was able to use the single diagonal at the bottom workaround at 4:55 and it looks/functions great! Thanks again man! :)
You're welcome, Jesse. Better to discover that it was the *shoe* that was odd and not yourself, right? I'm pleased that you found one of my odd workarounds suitable.
Exactly!! For the record, I did like how the European style looked when I tried it for the first time, but I had to tie it too tight to get enough string for the bow so I had to find a way to get this to work. Keep doing what you do Prof. Shoelace!
I was pleased to receive your photo of the end result, which has since been posted to the gallery on my website. I totally agree with the “clean, classic look”. Nice one!
I also never knew that there there would be quite so much information about shoelaces until I first started adding it to my website. Glad that the website is helpful to you.
Thank you so much for posting this! I bought some Supergas and was able to do my first bar lacing because of your video:) I used the criss cross configuration you showed on your phone since mine have 5 eyelets. Great video - thanks again.
My family and I got a bunch of new shoes today! Some DC, Vans, and Converse just to name a few... Well anyway, the display shoes were all bar laced, but after we got home and tried to lace our shoes using the bar lacing method, we failed over and over. I got so frustrated until my boyfriend suggested RUclips. Thanks Professor Shoelace :) You explained things clearly and easily. Now our family's shoes are ready to go :)
+Tawny Smith It would seem to be a good idea to turn the shoe 180 degrees, but if I did, terms like "top" and "bottom" become ambiguous. Top of the lacing? Or top of the screen?

I can't believe I'm just now deciding to look this up as I washed all my shoe' s and their laces. Couldn't quite get them laced up the same so I decided to RUclips this and wah lah! 👌 Thank you so much for this video and it's so easy to follow compared to some of the other ones I had to skip over. Great stuff thanks ! 😉👍🏼👏
Good job washing your shoelaces - most people never get around to that. Perfect opportunity to change up the style. I'm pleased that my tutorial video worked for you where others failed.
I started wearing vans at age 12, I am 24 now. I’ve used this video to lace my laces ever since. I buy 4 pears of vans each year. 4 times 12 equals me watching this video 48 times. Thank you so much
ProfessorShoelace sort of, but it doesn't tie tight. I probably messed I up at some point. Either way sorry I didn't thank you for the video that sparked the interest in lacing, was just a bit frustrated with getting to the end and experiencing that, but it's pretty funny looking back at it. So, thanks!
You are not alone, Danesh. Many people get frustrated when they discover that an odd number of eyelet pairs changes straight lacing into a not-so-straightforward experience. And I appreciate your "Thank you" as well!
No sweat, learn my “Ian Knot” and you'll add “Can tie the world's fastest shoelace knot” to the “+” side of your equation, putting you back ahead of the pack.
Sorry you couldn't follow my Aussie accent. Press RUclips's [CC] button to turn on Closed Captions (aka subtitles), which are for the benefit of both hearing impaired people and international listeners. (PS. It was actually "vacant eyelet")

thank you this helps alot at first i just wanted this lacing because a character in a show i watch has this kind of lacing and my shoes kinda look like hers but now i realize it makes them more comfortable as well!
Thank you so much! I had no idea how to lace my shoes in this cool-looking way & your video made it so simple! Thank you also for the video. I don't think I could have done it just by listening to instructions. The background lesson behind this lacing style was really cool too. I learned something new today! Thanks again & your accent's **awesome** btw 😃
You're welcome, Alyson, I'm pleased that you were able to learn Straight Bar Lacing from my video. Thanks also for the nice comment about my accent, especially coming so soon after other comments saying I talk too much!
Great to hear that it has been successful and is giving you relief. As for the uneven end lengths, that shouldn't have happened, but it's nothing that a little adjustment won't fix. Good luck!
I've laced my shoes similar to this for years, but with no bow. This was on par up till 2:45. After that lace I stopped and bar laced the other lace over instead so both lace ends were inside the shoe. From there I would put my foot in then grab each lace and "Let it Rip!" to tighten them, then tuck the remaining lace under my heel. If I needed a tight fit, I would tie a one loop knot behind my ankle then tuck it into the back of my shoe.
I love your website. You are so generous. I found your book on Amazon and ordered it. The reviews say that rhe book is out of print. You should reconsider putting it back in print. I am buying 2 more for our great nieces, I think rhey will love your book. And will enjoy showing off their sneakers with fancy lacing.Thank you. I also love your Ian Knot.
Thanks again for your kind words, Diane. It's a shame about my book, but it was the publisher's choice not to reprint, not mine. It seems to matter little that my book received such positive reviews from customers and that it completely sold out. I can only guess that that they need a book to be a runaway bestseller nowadays before they will consider reprints.
Thanks professor! I found the diagram on your website a bit confusing but this video made it really simple to follow. My new shoes look way cooler now. Cheers!
Chris Holesgrove Thanks for the feedback. It certainly seems to help if I present different methods to suit different learning styles. Glad you're enjoying the end result.
I have been wearing my Converse All stars like this forever. They do feel MUCH less heavy with tension on the top of the foot laced this way. Well. Tonight i just laced my work boots for the very first time. I have owned maybe 20 pair over the years and immediately the pressure on top of my foot was relieved. And they look way cooler.
for the 7 holes i simply left the lower lace the one on the in side alone and took the top one on the outside across and into the left side hole from the outside in to finish the bar look then went back and evened the length of the ends and tied them. great video thanks
I found this video to be very easy to follow. I just bought LED laces for roller skates and I'm searching for a way to use them with my standard laces, so that I don't put pressure on the LED cord. With this method, I'm hoping to cross under the standard laces and bar lace the LEDs. Thanks for sharing!
+Karen Burke Thanks for your positive feedback. You're right that this lacing will put the LEDs and wiring under less stress. Straight Bar Lacing runs through the eyelets at 90° angles whereas Criss Cross Lacing has much sharper angles of less than 90°. Good luck!
G'day Ian! I just got new shoes online, and wanted to lace them nicely and came across your channel. Not only is this straight bar lacing perfect for what I wanted aesthetically, but the lock lacing technique you mentioned was a real life saver, because the heel of these shoes was slipping somewhat. This was very frustrating as I loved everything else about them and didn't want to have to return them to and have to go searching for another style I liked. Thank you so much for your help!
You're welcome, Nicholas. I was fascinated that you found the combination of the two techniques just perfect for you. That's the first time I've heard of that! Enjoy your new shoes, new lacing and new heel security.
I'm 38, I use to do this when I was in my teens, just got some black and white Reebok classics with white laces, and I forgot how to do this, thank you

It seems to matter little that my book received such positive reviews from customers and that it completely sold out. I can only guess that that they need a book to be a runaway bestseller nowadays before they will consider reprints.
Loved the fastest tie and the end! Thanks dude!
I can't help showing off my "Ian Knot" - glad you liked it!
I have finally solved my problem for tying my shoelaces. Btw I'm 22. Thanks, love!
Elsye Aisyah Great to know that you'll now undertake problem-free lacing of your shoes with Straight Bar Lacing. Enjoy it, Elsye.
thank you very much i REALLY appppppppreciate you teaching us SUBS how to do this type of lace for our shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're welcome, it's nice to teach when you know the end result is appreciated.
Great stuff! Now you have tension-free footwear both for work and leisure.
for the 7 holes i simply left the lower lace the one on the in side alone and took the top one on the outside across and into the left side hole from the outside in to finish the bar look then went back and evened the length of the ends and tied them. great video thanks
.

Thanks for your positive feedback. You're right that this lacing will put the LEDs and wiring under less stress. Straight Bar Lacing runs through the eyelets at 90° angles whereas Criss Cross Lacing has much sharper angles of less than 90°. Good luck!
I never thought of doing two at a time. Smart.
Trying to explain the separate paths of each end is much more awkward. I'm glad you found this way easier, Emilio.
I'm 38, I use to do this when I was in my teens, just got some black and white Reebok classics with white laces, and I forgot how to do this, thank you
Classic black and white straight laced Reeboks coming up! Happy to have revived some fond memories.
