This was one of the most exciting segments of this show I've ever seen! It held my attention like a segment from CBS Sunday Morning, (no disrespect to 60 minutes). The information and pride conveyed in this segment had me wanting to stand and clap a one-person ovation to the graduates, the awesome instructors and Bill Whitaker & his whole crew....all for their bravery and commitment. Thank you for this!
I'm a charter boat Captain. Been across the Columbia River bar many times. Make sure you can read and understand a tide book. The ebb will ruin you. Pretty cool that you got to experience this. I've seen it bigger. There's good reason they gave it that nickname. Respect to the Guard.
Respect! When I was young, my father owned a self-righting lifeboat that we used to sail into the North Sea. We never made a complete roll (thankfully) but I loved every moment on board!
The only story in this was, (surfmen) coast guard, you need to not only have nerves of steel, stomach the seasickness, huge waves, harshest weather, the rescue is heart racing. All these brave " heros" is amazing, awestruck
My dad was 30yrs in the USCG and I have such respect for him and those who are protecting our borders and saving people in all conditions. Semper Paratus! 🇺🇸
Have been aboard the 47 lifeboat, and watched them coming out of Bodega Bay CA where they practice and also at the entrance to Tomales Bay, where I have crossed at the exactly wrong time. Had my 27ft sailboat crossing the Tomales Bar with ~9ft waves when the O/B motor died going up the front of a wave off the bar. A quick dive down to the OB got it restarted, and we finally got to Bodega Bay. I am now very careful to be sure to cross Tomales entrance at only High Water Slack tide.
I joined the U.S. Coast Guard when I was a young man and served one hitch before being discharged and pursuing an electrical engineering career. Now that I'm in my twilight years, I fondly look back on those days. Semper Paratus fellow Coasties.
Correction, the US Lifesaving Service was founded in 1848, not 1872. When the USCG was evaluating locations for the National Motor Lifeboat School, the 3 inlets along the Outer Banks of North Carolina were considered, but the Coast Guard determined that at those 3 inlets the surf was "too unpredictable, and when it was the same size as Cape Disappointment, it was too dangerous for training."
As a Norwegian sailor both navy and commercial i find this seget quite nice 😁 was kinda confused at start tho since the flybridge looks like a smaller open vessel.
How spectacular is that for a wakeup call? Hope you didn't eat breakfast Coastie !!! You got the best job in the world Mr Whitaker. I spent my whole life between North Carolina and Floridà coastlines. Both have incredibly dangerous regions. Dont forget to bring us some King Crab Legs my friend ..... 😁
My father use to go salmon fishing and had to cross the Oregon bar many time and said they have had very bad weather and smooth like glass at times. He loved salmon fishing (recreational), but hated that bar 😂
In the mid 1960s, all Coast Guard recruits were subjected to being strapped into a 44 footer and then rolled over 360 degrees. We had no helmets and no specialized clothing even though it was March in the Atlantic. Now, I guess it's a rating....but we were just pogues in boot camp and no one ever really commended us or filmed a national report. I suspect that , as a group, we were much tougher...much harder...and , certainly, more abused and unrecognized.
Kudos to 60min, for this report on the Military Component of the, Coast Gard!! And it's actually the kind of reporting & great segment that they should ALWAYS BE DOIN! NOT that this is goin to reverse the damaging interview with Kamala, & all the coverup! But this reminds me of the Ol' days when I watched 60min. For their actual truthful viewer content!! Really wish they'd go back to this formate, JS!!!! Disappointing now days!!!
Prior service USCG BM3 .. coxswain.. 21', 41' and 44' surf boat. Cape D. Was no joke.. but it was fun. Sounds like a contradiction lol.. but it is not.
It's been many years since I've watched 60 minutes. I can't stand all of this fake news stuff. But this report was incredibly interesting. We should see more of this type of reporting.
If things are not cleared out, I do not think I will trust this program anymore. It's like trying to warrant the Cosby show, so full of activities but truth.
Respect to the designers and engineers of the boat.

It was great fun in my youth. 41, 44 and 52 engineer crewman.

As a mariner I love these guys, thank you for looking out for us, and of course if we can ever return the favor :)

No seasickness. In these conditions you're too juiced on adrenaline for seasickness. We call it "FUN!"

Some of us live here and fish within 100-200 yards of this spot. We can see it from the calm water in front of Astoria, Oregon. What a place!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ loved watching this. Shared with my son Charlie who is currently in the USCG!
We went salmon fishing many times in the Columbia River, crossing the bar you always have respect for the Columbia River. What great times❣️❣️
Wow, Mr Whitaker. What an amazing experience for you and the 60 Minutes Team.
All Coast Guard Members are Amazing People

That’s the type of man you want on the job.

Go Bill GO!! You ROCK!❤
These men and women that serve our nation, for very little accolades and even less pay. God bless them and their families.

Semper Paratus U.S. Coast Guard!
Dad was a "Coasty" for 33 years. Growing up I got a lot of beach time, from Miami to Galveston to Dana Point.
USCG motto: Always Ready!
Oh my scary waves ...😢😢😢 I salute those men n women who risk their lives for their country
😮😮 I recently got a Boston Whaler boat I wish my boat do that😊😊
“The things I do for my job” 1:30
As he complains about his cold hands to the coast guard 😂
Make the important interesting. Well done, 60 Minutes. Semper Paratus!
Semper Paratus

When I lived in Astoria in early 70s they had one of those roll over boats not roll back upright in a training exercise!
My father use to go salmon fishing and had to cross the Oregon bar many time and said they have had very bad weather and smooth like glass at times. He loved salmon fishing (recreational), but hated that bar 😂
Having crossed the 'bar', you can only begin to understand the meaning of the word Respect. If you don't, you don't continue.
HOOO RAAAH...these are truly FIRST RESPONERS!!!
How many lives have been buried in that graveyard?
A lot… I live there in Astoria
Wow what an amazing experience. What’s the pay 💰
Is there a full episode of this story?
Thats terrifying
Can we call it... An unsinkable ship?
Full of endorphins relaxed
I would enjoy it if I try it too it sounds fascinating
I'd be in diapers if I was that reporter.
Did you get the shot on the first take or did you have to refill it to get the answer you wanted? 😂😂😂😂
those boys need to start putting heed bottles on their kit.

Cool story, no one ever said.
Turn over the transcripts.
Make the original footage available.
It was a stolen boat out of the west marina , some guy was trying to go back to Canada.
Engines died because of the fuel filters being clogged, the rough conditions caused sediments to stir-up in the fuel tanks.
Place is no joke been there
Can I go for a ride!? I'll sign a waiver!?
Say what? This area is as much a part of Oregon as Washington, since the Columbia River is the boundary.
Works

You found a way to take a great story and make it boring. CBS = vapor
Did you guys edit this video to make it more dramatic? LOL losers!
Have you ridden a boat in the area they covered in the segment? If the answer is NO, then it is you 🫵 who is the loser.
Hey Willie boy …….Just get back on your inflatable seahorse and paddle over to mommy in your backyard pool.

Much respect! Now release the unedited Kamala interview!
Wtf does Madam Vice President have to do with this story? 🙄
Just another Trump supporter who can't admit that Trump lost the election 4 years ago.
Hard to watch 60 minutes anymore. Their credibility has gone to crap
And yet, here you are.
@@theREALdingusMD well it’s not like they gain anything by editing a coast guard story compared to Kamalalalalala editing 🤡🤡🤡
Sorry 60 minutes, you lost all credibility after the Kamala edition..
How the hell did you manage to make a story about being a USCG surf man boring…?
Release the Kamala Harris interview transcripts
What kamala Harris transcripts?
Are you in trumps cult? Just wondering 🤔
Wtf does Madam Vice President Harris have to do with this story? Stay on topic.
I've lost all respect for 60 minutes!
They don't care LOL
They always were Left Wing propaganda….starting with that Five Star phony Mike Wallace
Bless your heart
Don't watch 60 min then! But I'll bet you watched all of this segment anyway.
@@stevecarlson7483 LOL I posted this yesterday, did you actually scroll through the comments? 🤣
