I still drive my dad's 1986 Ford F-150. It looks similar to these older trucks. It only gets 12 miles to the gallon now, but it keeps going . (It has the 302 V8 engine)
My grandfather's 78 E100 still runs great. It's got a 300 I6 and is 3 on the tree,he put a grill from a 79 model van because he liked the look of square headlights more than the round ones that come on the 78 stock. He also did dual exhaust with 2 bullet mufflers and relocated the exhaust pipes to dump just before the rear tires, it really gives the van a nice deep exhaust note and looks pretty badass.

The last trucks that could do any sort of work is the late 90s to 2008 That 5.7 liter V8 made some good power But there is some problems like a gear somewhere in the engine is a common fail (I forgot the name of the gear)

Back in the day your only safety features were lap belts, or over the shoulder belts. So 30 mpgs wasn't unheard of. especially with a six cylinder and five speed or six speed manual.
Have you ever owned a Dodge Ram from 1984 with a straight 6 and a five speed manual transmission? Cause I can assure you that truck had no problem with getting between 30-35 mpg unloaded and with two people in the cab.

I currently drive a 77 F100 with a 390 to haul firewood and stone. We don't stack it either. We throw it in the bed. The most damage it has taken is a few tiny dents, and some missing paint. You can tell it has age, but it is still structurally sound. Never changed the trans. The original engine went out, but the 390 has been in it since the early 90s.I can't knock any old pickups though. They're all better than the garbage they pump out today.
The only thing I have to say to those cinder block and log "mountains" is: YIKES. Those trucks looked like they were going to come unglued and snap in half driving over that!

i am telling you my old inline 300 would never have gotten anywhere near that with a 4 speed that I had and tall hiway gears. Most I ever got was around 20
it was a straight six not a v6 and there is no way the f150 got anywhere near 29mpg unless it was going down hill the whole time. great pickups, great engine, just no way they got 29. I would believe 24 maybe
it also had to be the I6, 5-speed, 2wd, with the tallest gear in the rear they offered. my dad had one and he said he got 27mpg hwy, that's also running 55mph using premium fuel. we now have an 88 with a 302 5speed 4x4 and a 94 with I6 5speed 4x4 and they both do really well on fuel

What happened between the 80s and 90s? My 99 f150 has an EPA estimate of 13mpg, and it gets far worse than that. 29mpg? That's nuts!
