The War of the Red Diamond was Potema the Wolf Queen trying to usurp the Ruby Throne of the Empire to put her son Uriel III on the throne in place of Kintyra II. She failed to stop her niece's coronation and was banished from the Imperial court. As Queen of Solitude, Potema coordinated her war against the Empire from Skyrim, High Rock, and Morrowind. She won the siege on the Imperial City and put Uriel III on the throne, which marked the start of the War of the Red Diamond as Potema's younger brothers fought to depose her and her son. The War ended with Cephorus I being proclaimed Emperor, and Potema holed up in Solitude where she delved even further into necromancy and daedra summoning, finally dying in 3E 137 during the Siege of Solitude, a decade after Cephorus' coronation. Her madness is said to have infused the stone of the Blue Palace, driving her successor mad. Her successor being none other than Pelagius III, Sheogorath's second-favorite Septim.
Potema's spirit is finally banished by the Last Dragonborn in 4E 201, following a botched binding ritual by a coven of necromancers.

Definitely one of my favorites! However, I've always wished there was more to do in Winterhold...
