    Been driving with a TMX wheel on Horizon for ages, very tough to drift, but you have to adjust the advanced custom wheel settings, I tweaked my advanced settings for months before I got the right feel and now I regularly get podium finishes.. (mainly racing on S1 or A class with no assists, full sim)
    It's very important to turn down/off re-centering force (center spring scale). Wheel rotation is set to 540. Turn the Vibration scale Way down but set the understeer and minimum force to max feel. That way you can feel when your tires are slidling but the vibration isn't so stiff it jerks you around. Wish I was near my xbox so i could just give you a full description but I'm just going off the top of my head atm.
    Edit: update with actual settings as I’m checking - not really set up for drifting, moreso rally racing and tarmac sprints/circuits.

      I bought my g920 and shifter for horizon 3. It's realistic. Clutch travel, Turing ratio, Suspension travel etc, are all noticed for each car.
      The thing is How do you drive a s1 car at 180 through country roads. You don't.. G forces won't allow it. And it's something you feel immediately when using a wheel in horizon.
      It takes practice and proper breaking. But I love trying to keep up with pad users in a realistic way.

      Pretty much sums up Forza on PC. There are better options out there for wheel users, and it seems to be a theme. Once a gamer gets a wheel, Forza takes a back seat to some other title.

    Pretty much agree with most things said in this video. I personally only use my g920 for cruising around the map in stick shift cars. The controller is just way faster and easier to use to the point where you'd need to put in 10x the amount of work to be as fast as you would be on controller, especially in the higher class cars. And don't even get me started on drifting, its a nightmare compared to Assetto Corsa.

    • @krautworks
      @krautworks 5 лет назад +19

      @@wavybump Of course wheels are more accurate, but a controller is almost OP compared to a wheel. Everything is faster and more direct, a wheel is precise but also bigger and thus slower.
      And I have to agree with
      ibanezs470dx when it comes to drifting. In Assetto Corsa I can drift no problems, even without ever touching the hydro brake, but Forza is just too far from reality. Controller drifting is fine, though.

      If you are buying it mostly for fh4 I would recommend you buy the g920 instead of the g29 as fh4 doesn't show you the buttons that are on the wheels in the menus and settings etc and with the g920 being the Xbox version of the wheel he uses in this video you don't have to guess the buttons as they are the same as on the controller. I bought my g920 for fh3 originally and now use it in fh4 and I can confirm that you really need better settings as the stock ones are ok but not amazing

    • @shadlad91
      @shadlad91 4 года назад +6

      I feel the same. The game gives good road feel and such through bumps and surfaces but it just can't figured out cornering properly. It's like you are driving on egg shells in every corner. I watched a video on the camaro zl1 lapping Nurburgring paying close attention on the corner entry and exit speed and then compared that to what I could do on tight hair pins in the game. Even at 50 to 60 kilometres per hour ( I'm Canadian lol) the car was under steering around 45 degree turns and the amount of lock you have to use to make it turn right is way off. One can tune it out some but it just always seems that the game can't deal with cornering grip right. You always feel like the car is on ice in the corners and every input has to be way to gentle. Still love the game but if you are going with a wheel be prepared to spend some time to get it so it's at least fun and drivable but not awesome.

      @@shadlad91 Ae I'm A Kiwi so we use kilometres per hour too haha, but yeah your 100% right even at 40-50 kays the thing just spins round n round like a spinning top. • @shadlad91
      @shadlad91 4 года назад +3

      @@Synthetic-Chicken I have been trying to dial it in since and its just not happening. This game just doesn't understand cornering principles. I built a Integra FWD type r maxed then tried racing and even though it is FWD it still wanted to overseer way way to much. Tried smoothly throttling off the apex and the type r just kept spinning out with stupid oversteer. I was getting angry because here I am racing a 420 hp FWD and yet some how it still kept drifting out on every turn . Uh its FWD so why is it over steering so bad as it should at least spinning front tires and under steering like crazy. I have done some real world racing and played every sim I can think of, gtr, gtr2, race o7, gt legends , project cars , Assetto corsa , ACC and much more. Saying that I dont like Forza H4 physics because any built car has this set tire model that thinks any cornering is a reason to induce snap over steering. I'm just sticking to cruising in this game as the racing part is just to out of wack with tire models and grip.

    I have been using that same wheel for fh4, fh3 and fm7 for almost a year. For me the biggest difference wasn't actually the wheel itself for steering input, but the gas pedal for throttle control. However, I didn't come from a controller but from a keyboard.
    With keyboard, cross country was easier, but road racing was harder. So when I went from keyboard to wheel, I began to enjoy road racing a lot more, but had to relearn how to drive offroad.
    And I agree with Hokihoshi that the adjustment period was about 2 weeks. For about 2-3 weeks I thought I had made a mistake and wasted a whole lot of money, then it clicked and there was no going back.
    I had heard that all the fastest drivers in fh4 use controller (or keyboard), but for me the wheel with cockpit or bonnet view makes it so much more immersive.

  • @psistorm04
    @psistorm04 5 лет назад +8

    From my impressions, you indeed get a huge advantage driving with controller or even keyboard, since the game takes over so much of the controls for you, whilst with the wheel you deal with both physics and force feedback which are somewhat subpar.
    As a noob driver I tend to struggle massively, since generally FH4 expects you to drive at the limit all the time for races and story events, and with kb/controller the game helps you, whilst with the wheel, it's all YOU doing the driving. Especially with drifting, on KB you can do the gta style arcade drift, but if youre new to it and go for a wheel, prepare to spend hours doing even simple maneuvers. I have yet to three-star even the simplest drift zone, it's a huge difficulty spike for me.
    Also the first mission of drift club is almost unplayable with how twitchy the NPC car youre driving is. Hit the high revs and it'll pretty much just spin out in a random direction and no amount of countersteer saves it. It really shows that the game was tuned for kb/controller and wheels are an afterthought, so driving a wheel in higher class racing will put you at a noticeable disadvantage, but immersion and fun wise, it IS an upgrade. Just yeah, prepare to suck if youre new to driving. Just dont let it discourage you, just like the video says, start in low class racing to avoid undue frustrations.
    Which is why I would love FH5 to get more of a realistic vibe, whilst keeping the fun, lighthearted street racing vibe. A bit more grounding in reality, better wheel support and FFB would go a long way.
    Also I feel like a lot of the wheel tunes people suggest are mainly focused on trying to tune out bad FFB behavior and making the wheel super light, which I find kind of weird, and I'd much prefer settings that actually focus on more realism both for racing and drifting. Nevertheless, even though I stink at it, it's still a really fun game to play.

    I also bought a cheap used G29 a few months ago and I can really recommend it. Not only Forza now brings me so much joy, but it made me a better driver. I can actually modulate throttle, brakes and steering, so I can drive more unstable cars on simulation setting. If a car is unstable I can just drive more carefully instead of spinning.
    What I really recommend it is ShakeIt ruclips.net/video/8aLqqcEaUVk/видео.html - in my case motors placed on brake and throttle pedals, which spin when wheels start to spin (throttle pedal) and when wheels lock (brake pedal).
    It allowed me to learn to break without ABS, understand the car and made me a lot faster.

    I might be a bit spoiled for this question, having played actual sims with a wheel for a long time and then trying FH4 with it, My answer is a resounding no. The force feedback just feels completely wrong, making driving much harder, rather than giving you a better sense of how well your tires are gripping.

    • @CordovanSplotchVT

      My wheel is a logitech G25 and I thought the force feedback in FH4 felt awful.
      I absolutely love my wheel when playing Project Cars 2, Assetto Corsa (and Competitione).
      The biggest problem I had with FFB in FH4 is that you have to fight against the force feedback when trying to countersteer in a slide, in stead of the force feedback actually helping you countersteer like it should as the front wheels automatically would turn towards the direction the car is moving regardless of which direction it's pointing.
      It made drifting and rally at performance classes over B almost impossible, and I ended up nearly only driving front wheel drive and four wheel drive cars.
      I had to play it with a wheel a bunch after release because it didn't work with my PS4 controller like FH3 did when I played that, so I played it with my wheel until I could get me an XBox One controller.

    Great vid, it's interesting you noticed the same things I did when I transitioned to a wheel, for me this was back when Race Driver Grid was at it's height. In essence I tried Grid for 2-3 months with the wheel but found it incredibly hard to forget "Controller habits" and I found I was barely able to beat laptimes and drifting with the assists off was a total nightmare, spinning out becoming the regular routine wheras with a controller I'd held 2nd place in the 1 on 1 ESL drift ladder for several months (Until ver 1.3 was hacked and cheaters returned like an unwanted rash).
    Then Dirt 3 launched and I never used a controller (tested 1 once and was horrified to be unable to counter slides in any way so never bothered to try and learn). After a couple of month or so of playing I went back to Grid 1 lo and behold my laptimes dropped like a stone by anywhere from 3 to 8 seconds a lap (even more for the really long tracks).
    For anyone considering a wheel I'd strongly suggest they not try a game they have vast experience with a controller, instead pick a game you've never played and only use the wheel, once you get acceptable and comfortable then go back to your previous titles. The results might just surprise you.
    As for FH4 with a wheel it's far more forgiving to controllers as, if you launch the car travelling in a straight line you can effectively let go of the stick and the front wheels self align, the car will land straight and off you go, with a wheel on the other hand you've GOT to position the steering just right on landing or it'll fire you in to the weeds or spin you round.
    For the settings I personally limit the wheel to 180 degrees rotation as this allows a similar lock to lock reaction time to a controller making fast transitions far far easier, it also eliminates the need to remove your hands from the wheelrim so you're always fully in control. This does make for twitchy as hell racing but once you get used to it things like this become possible....
    ruclips.net/video/Hsf7Liw4uTY/видео.html
    ruclips.net/video/VIrLFcd-caI/видео.html
    As I said try using a new release game where you haven't developed any such "controller habits" this way you don't have to retrain your brain and fight against ingrained instinctive reactions all the time. A new to you game avoids this conflict allowing a more unforced development of good wheel habits. Then and only then go back to your games library, You'll be amazed at how much easier this makes the transition...

Rallying definitely felt the best for the wheel, but I also have AC and DiRT 4 and Rally, and a few other sim-racers. Horizon is really good at merging all 3 pretty evenly, and making it feel good to a Controller, not a wheel. For those who might want a second opinion, I use a thrustmaster TX. I have used it in a variety of game (FH2, 3, 4, FM7, F1 '19, Dirt 3, 4) and I would say I mostly agree with what he said. FH4 is built from the ground up for a controller, not a wheel. If you looking be more competitive a controller is by far the better option in FH4. However if you play other racing games besides just the FH series than I would recommend a wheel. I even use the wheel in FM7 and I have found it to be easier than controller. (Just want to pop in and clarify the entire Forza franchise is a simcade so be careful about calling any of them sims). In actuality Wheel players and controller players are on the same level as each other in FM7 so don't expect an advantage on anything except ovals. Same can be said for the F1 games (simcade) where I prefer the wheel but controller players are still very competitive. Dirt I would argue is a different story though. I find a wheel is an advantage in Dirt (however this is also a simcade).
    Where a wheel outperforms controllers the most are the sims. Assetta Corsa, iRacing, ect. In these having a wheel will not only give you the biggest advantage but also feel the most realistic (which is why he preferred drifting in AC). On consoles you only have access to AC but if you play it on a wheel you will love it. Their physics engines are very different though with cars being a lot less forgiving (which is why the harsh turns from controllers don't work to well on these).
    So should you get a wheel? Really depends on what you want to do. If you want one for the fun of it go for it. Even games like FH are a lot more fun in my opinion on the wheel. If your wanting to be more competitive, depends on which games you play. If your shooting to ever play any sim, than you 100% need a wheel. Its pretty much that simple.
    How much do you need to spend? Honestly as long as you have Force Feedback (FFB) your good. The more you spend the better/stronger the FFB will be. The Logitech G29 and the Thrustmaster TMX and TX are all great wheels for beginners. Which one you choose is really up to you. I got the TX because I preferred the mechanism by which it produces its FFB (less notchy and its quieter) and the steering wheel is removable so I can swap between my 2 rims. However it's the most expensive one I listed. The G29 and TMX are both great options with most people going for the G29 over the TMX (really don't know a ton about the TMX so I can't speak for it).

    I don't know how Asetto Corsa works but Forza Horizon series give you better experience if played with a controller. Especially an Xbox controller. You can also use wheels on racing games but if you're going to use, i strongly recommend you to get a wheel which uses the belt-drive system. Like Thrustmaster and Fanatec. Due to the belt-drive system, they're more long-lasting and they're more silent. All Logitech wheels including G29 uses the gear system and it makes a really loud sound if you steer the wheel too fast or too suddenly. You can even break the gears if you try to steer hard.
    But if you're a sim trucking fan just like me, probably G29 is going to work without problems.

    Horizon 4 does play really well with a Racing Wheel and Pedal set-up once you have the settings right !!
    The only thing is, if you want everything spot-on right, it can take a fair bit of tweaking and time to get everything just right and I'm talking about days even weeks not just a few minutes or hours (depending on how long you play each time that-is) to get them really dialed-in properly, you'll think it's right one day then you'll drive a different car and give something another tweak here and there, so initially, you can get it set pretty much spot-on relatively quick it's just the Fine Tuning of everything that takes the extra time BUT if you love the game and playing with a wheel and pedals set-up then you'll give it the time that's needed and before you know it you'll have it sorted !!
    You just have to simply play the game then tweak bits here and there as you go, trial and error every aspect and before you know it, you'll have it all sorted and be flying around the massive open map with control and style and loving it.....Enjoy !!
    EDIT: Fixed some spelling.

    immersive, very fun, realistic and overall nice but you will NEVER win drifting and harder corrective steering makes racing really, really hard in Online. ALSO ONLY USE 450 DEGREE OF ROTATION OR LESS

    • @CordovanSplotchVT
      @CordovanSplotchVT 5 лет назад +1

      It's not realistic at all to be honest, the force feedback is implemented horribly and does the exact opposite of what it should do when your car starts sliding.
      The front wheels of a car will always turn towards the direction where they meet the least resistance, meaning if you let go of the wheel in a slide, the car should countersteer on it's own, but in FH4 (and FH3 too to a degree but the FFB in that game was terribly weak), you suddenly have to fight against the FFB to countersteer.
      It's completely retarded, especially for a game that has drifting as such a big part of it.
      If it were realistic, drifting would be easier with a wheel, not infinitely harder.

    The thing with Horizon is it is meant to be arcadeish game, so it will be more optimized for a controller than a wheel. but with sims like Asseto corsa, F1 series etc. These are designed with simulation in mind, so a wheel in this case can help with the emersion and can be quicker, with enough practise.

    4:04 - While yes, this game was designed primarily for controllers, I think the ability to tame high-power cars is the "sideeffect" of this game being a semi-arcade. Try a game like BeamNG & you'll see how hard it is to actually control a high-powered car

    *before watching the video
    It's a lot of fun to drive with a steering wheel, especially drifting but you need a good setup cause you can't just "kick the joystick" to the other side to correct a drift, you have a disadvantage against keyboard and controller players, but you'll definitely have a lot more fun

  • @RuhmannLeonhardt
    @RuhmannLeonhardt 4 года назад

    Much harder to drift with a wheel, but much more fun. On a controller you can fully turn the wheel one way with a flick of a finger, with a wheel you have to take the time to fully turn the wheel 480 degrees.

    - [ ] I bought a Thrustmaster T-150 (PS3, PS4), three years ago, for $105 on Amazon, on Black Friday, which was sweet, and looking at the racers jump, within the PS3 era and within the PS4, there‘s _been_ a HUGE difference in mechanical sophistication and graphical fidelity/stability, from the beginning to the end of the PS4 era, and there’s still a year, for more games. That didn’t seem quite as contrasting, from _Collin McRae: DiRT Rally_ (PS3, 2007), to _DiRT 3_ (PS3; 2011l), then from _DiRT Rally_ (PS4, 2015 - about four years and one month, between games), through _DiRT 4_ (PS4; 2017), to look at _DiRT Rally 2.0_ (PS4, 2019; about four years and one month). _DiRT Rally 2.0 is incredible, as are Gran Turismo Sport, Assetto Corsa; Competizione,_ and _Project Cars 2.0,_as compared to their early-PS4 counterparts.
    - [ ] With a wheel - the T-150 also comes with plastic pedals and paddle gears, which rock - PS4 racing is so great (and what X-Box does, too, with what it has, for a library), at least a second tier Thrustmaster, or an entry tier Logitech (about $100, to as much as $150, if quickly necessary.
    - [ ] I waited a month and a half, for a Christmas sale and saved $45, along with getting a good education, about wheels, their expandability, and their compatibility with systems (the T-150 does both the PS3 and PS4) and games (like _The Crew,_ *some* _NFS_ but *not the* _NFS_ reboot, _Burn out: Paradise City Remastered,_ and etc.)
    - [ ] If you really like racing and have a way to set it up, with stability, then grab one, especially if they’re on sale - or got for it, and get a full setup, with pneumatic cage. That would kick ass! (Also get a PC, in that case... )
