Blakey had the broadest dynamic range of any drummer I ever heard. Not just that he could but he did. At any time. Turn on a dime. Back and forth from a whisper to a shout. Never heard anybody else who could do it like Art
art blakeys idea about jazz being spiritual is beautiful and it resonates with me a whole lot, you really can feel god through jazz, because jazz is just a continuation of gods creation through human beings, its the most momentary, emotional, spiritual, and freeing kind of music on this planet
What a beautiful compilation of testimonials on Art's greatness. Thank you so much! P.s.: I think the part at around 32:00 appears earlier in the video as well
@@peterhaslund; unfortunately it's true...he used to drawn the young musicians into heroin just to drop them when not able to contain addiction any longer.
All due respect you don't understand sh*t about addiction. Unless you are implying that Art was a drug dealer or forcing ppl to use you are WAY off base. If the sh*t was around it was around nobody is responsible for another person's addiction
That's cute that he thinks the highest form of execution on a musical instrument is jazz😁 It's good, but when compared to classical, it places well behind. If classical is 10/10, then jazz would be 7.5/10, then you got your rock & roll/blues that is 6/10, and rounding out the bottom is electronic music & hip hop, which comes in at 1/10.
My favorite drummer of ALL TIME!!!
He is missed. Big time.
Thanks and Blessings.... This made me feel like being in the Jazz Messengers, if only in my heart, thanks Art!
So glad they interviewed Max Roach, those are some incredible insights from an equally revolutionary drummer.

Legend. Innovator.
Lovely and brings sanity back to where it belongs
Good to see and hear the great Max Roach to lead off this outstanding portrait.
He played like his life depended on it. What an output.
indestructible is the best way to describe him
@@JazzVideoGuy I have "Live at the Cafe Bohemia - part 1 and 2" recorded in 1955. What a pair of masterpiece with many greats in the band.
Mr art blakey was truly great ,and fantastic for young musicians and the music. Much-loved
How well everyone reveres Buhaina and so tremendous to hear their personal reflections while in the band.
He left his mark on music, and the people who played with him.
